We found a nice big campsite about 10km outside of Split. Our pitch was located right next to a very calm and shallow bay. We spent the next 2 days catching up on some much needed clothes washing, going shopping in Split Centre (for my upcoming birthday presents and cake!) and also catching up on skype. Friday 28th August was my birthday! I awoke to a fully cooked hearty breakfast from my lovely wife, complete with a beautifully presented set table including a central floral arrangement (well a single flower and some shrubbery in a plastic cup) and folded napkins. Suz had gone to a lot of effort with what she had to work with! After devouring almost three pigs worth of bacon it was present opening time. A brand new t-shirt and a nice new ... read more

Split - Day 6-8 (28-30 August) We left Korcula at 5:45am taking a Catamaran Ferry for a few hours journey to Split. Split is a larger town on the Dalmatian mainland but it too has an old town, or more correctly a palace compound. We stayed right in the heart of it. The palace was of the Roman Emperor Diocletian, who loved Split for it’s beautry and therapuetic thermal spas. However, after his death it became disused and some time later (7th century) permission was given to some Romans to return from their exile and to set up insdie the palace area. Accordingly, many of the palace buildings are no longer there, having been replaced by ordinary dwellings, but ... read more

I took another bus, this time from Mostar in Bosnia to Dubrovnik in Croatia. The border crossing between the two countries was rather routine, as each border guard just looked at my passport. They stamped a few other passports of travellers on the bus, but mine and the other Canadian on the bus were just glanced at. Quite a bit different from travelling into and out of Serbia, my previous country. The bus was completely full, and since I got on half way through the bus trip at Mostar, I didn't get first choice of good seats, but I had to sit at the very back. And you know how sensitive I am to motion. As we got closer and closer to Dubrovnik on the coast, the more the road started to wind and curve and ... read more
