Leaving the hostel in the morning and took the bus to the bus station instead of walking with my backpack. Purchased an one-way ticket to Split and when the backpack was collected and put under belly of the bus, there was extra charge for the luggage. Nice ! Got on the bus and occupied the first seat on the first row so I had a panoramic view of the entire ride. We was asked to present travel documentation (passport) at the border checkpoint. Was I on the wrong bus ? I thought I bought the ticket from Dubrovnik to Split. Where was the bus heading ? It turned out there is a portion of the highway is cutting through Bosnia or perhaps the driver deliberately wanted to drive into Bosnia for cheap food before continuing onto ... read more

Nope I lie, actually it has been pissing down, thunder, lightening the whole works. I had just written a huge blog then the dam internet went down and I lost the lot so this will be short and sweet. The bus journey from Dubrovnik to Split was amazing. The scenery is spectular, big mountains, blue sea, picturesque villages and towns. We got here and were nearly mobbed by women trying to rent us their rooms. We eventually decided on one in the old town. For the two of us we had to pay 300 kuna, much more than we wanted but no one would negioate the price. It seems the going rate is 150 kuna per person and that is it. The place was nice and clean and right in town near the palace so that ... read more

Hello everyone!!! Just a quick note to let you know that we are all safe and sound in Split, southern Croatia. Lovely walled city with a port that makes Littleton look very sad indeed!!! Have had an opportunity to partake in some Dalmatian cuisine (very interesting, and very fishy, much to my chargrin), and to experience cinema Croatian style (thankfully, subtitled in Croatian, not dubbed, as in Hungary - however, brining ice cream into a movie theatre in Croatia is a no-no. Be warned). Have also had our first experience since Vietnam of long distance travel in the heat of the day in a bus without aircon or windows. Not to be reccommended. Also not to be recommended is unintentionally stumbling into Bosnia without any Bosnian currency. THankfully, Euros were accepted. Anyway, had better get a ... read more

The title of today's journal has a dual purpose: first of all, it describes the very long bus ride from Pula to Split. Secondly, Madonna's "I'm Sorry" was playing quietly on the bus as I got my first glimpse of Split from the opposite side of the coast at dusk; it struck me well, and I pulled out my iPod to listen to the rest of the album until we pulled into the bus station. I have been here for the past three days, arriving late on Thursday evening. I did not think that it would take so long, but, to my credit, this is because the girl at the reception desk in Pula had told me that the trip along the Dalmatian coast would take roughly six hours. Uh, try ten. Yeah, wasn't expecting that. ... read more

I wasn't happy when the alarm went off. I had a quick bath, and I think I used all the hot water again! Everyone else slowly got up, and I bid them farewell. I will see Kate again soon, and I will see Ginko and Nic in Prague in three weeks. Beck walked me down and saw me off at the port. There was a lot of people sleeping on the ferry, and even though I was so tired I couldn't get to sleep. Off the ferry and I walked around Split, which seemed to have a very nice waterfront. I was walking around in a daze, I think I was still 'a bit how ya goin' from the night before. There seemed to be lots of open areas and shops in the Old city. I ... read more

Today is our 2nd day in Split. Yesterday as i said, was a BIG christian festival here in Split. Apparently it is a festival to celebrate the birth of the Protector of the Town. Tens of thousands of people were in Split even up til 9pm (which is a rare sight), and there were little stalls selling food and handicraft. We took lots of photos of the people and the ruins of the Diocletian Palace (UNESCO world heritage site). The palace with its little alleys, is quite beautiful and its like a labryrinth. This morning we took a half-hour bus to nearby Trogir. Trogir is another UNESCO world-heritage site. Trogir is smaller version of Split, and much less touristy. Things there were cheaper too. I am using up my 20 min of internet time at the ... read more
