Omis in Croatia 8 July 2013 After leaving Bosnia-Herzegovenia, we then drove up to Omis where we checked into a Camping Park. All the beachside Parks are really busy as it is Europe’s summer holidays. There is always space available but prices are higher in the high-season. Instead of paying 13-16 Euros we are paying 23-45 Euros per night. It was really difficult to decide which beach to stay at because there are so many along this stretch of the Croatian coast. We chose Omis because it was on the beach rather than on top of the cliff overlooking the sea. After checking in at Camp Galeb we set ourselves up. The Park was busy with all the holiday makers. There were a lot of families which was great. After walking down the drive of the ... read more

We left Budapest from the Zapadni Kolod train station, Budapest’s newer rail station. Not built in the classical style architecture of the older station we arrived at with its soaring ceilings and sculpted exterior detailing this new station is more contemporary poured concrete and although much newer it is not aging anywhere near as gracefully as its predecessor. It readily shows its age when you enter, but nonetheless it’s functional and although we were an hour early for our departure our train was already at the platform and available for boarding. We had purchased our rail tickets, Budapest to Zagreb, through a travel agency at the rail station and the agent showed us that we would have considerable savings buying a return 1st Class ticket as opposed to a one-way ticket. So we had a 30 ... read more

This morning we broke the trend of getting up an going for a swim - we left the boat at 8.30 and went for a hike up to an old fortress. It took us about 45 mins to get up there, and it had an amazing view at the top so we got our snap on as per usual and took lots of pics. We struggled a bit after having done not much exercise for awhile and realised just how unfit we are!! Too much lying in the sun and holidaying! On the way down we got slightly lost and ended up on residential property and it took us twice as long as it had on the way up. I had thought our sense of direction was getting better but apparently not! After we got back ... read more

Today we went white water rafting in the canyon outside of Omis (The city of pirates) The weather was perfect! We were all a little nervouse since none of us had been before. We met our "Captain" whose name we could not prenounce or remember,(but boy was he HOT), at a small agency and hopped into a van with the raft strapped to the roof. The drive up was frightening, one lane winding roads with cars squeezing next to one another on tight cliffs. Cara and Gina were both holding on for dear life. When we got to the starting point on the river, Gina was laughed at for wearing a seat belt. So we squeezed into our life suits, Dad put his on inside out, helmets, and life vests and headed down the river. The ... read more

This is the wedding we saw in Omis. I have had to split the video to get it to stream on the blog. I hope those of you that know Croatia will delight in the tradition of the wedding... I like the singing and the horn blowing...but I'm a noisy person. The group came to the docks and sang songs where the groom's boat was moored. Then the groom turned up in a car, presumably with the best man and sang songs, out of the sky lite. And then the whole group drove down the road, rooster still attached to the flag of Croatia leading a cavalcade of well-wishers of to the wedding.... read more

We woke for breakfast and were told that Teddy had accompanied Ami for a late night swim. Ami had a fear for swimming in the sea so after a few drinks built up some dutch courage and decided swimming would be a good idea. Well, I think it was going ok for her until she had to get out. Two words “sea urchins”, adding a third "ouch". One place where there were no sea urchins is Zlatini Rat, Croatia’s nicest sand spit. That was our destination for the morning swim, it was a cracking day so the water was amazing and clear. Nathan, Teddy and I skimmed stones for a good while until our arms almost fell off. The rest of the morning was again spent relaxing, listening to tunes and looking forward to lunch. We ... read more

Making an unexpected day trip from Split today. Omis is a beautiful little coastal town by the Adriatic Sea south of the second biggest city in Croatia, Split. I took a public bus in the morning from Split heading south. I don't know how far I should ride the bus and where I should get off. This day trip is by far the most spontaneous journey I have made. Bought the ticket from the little window not too far from the ferry terminal, I hopped on the bus #60. I sat by a Croatian gentleman who did not speak English, yet, with signed languages and pictured drawings, we managed to communicate and I learned that he is a teacher. I told him where I originally came from and where I was heading. It was quite an ... read more
