Luckily we were here before the football! Unfortunately we would have to recomend Zagreb even though their football team sucks! It was the longest train throughout Europe, spanning a whole six hours! It also went pretty close to our next stop of Lubalubajuba (Ljubljana) half way there. Adam stood and marvelled at cake shop windows for about 75% of the time we were there!! And got a little over excited about ice cream! This is true but to be fair it was actually about 80% of the time and im not afraid to admit that! We went to this amazing ice-cream and cake shop where the idea was to stand in the shop and eat cake!!! We took our time but we were there only about 20mins but about 3 guys woofed down two cakes each ... read more

I forgot to mention that me and Jer checked out London Bridge, and contrary to popular belief it is in fact not falling down. We also met a pigeon man who had seeds and put them in your hands and you get pigeons all over your arms and stuff, it was actually really gross. I forget what we did the next day, we went to Tower Bridge and on the way we were like 5 feet away from Dustin Hoffman who was there doing a movie. We also went to the Wembly soccer stadium but couldnt get in on a tour that day :( Met up with sarah and her relatives, she was pretty happy to see me and all her relatives are pretty nice, we went to the beach and jer departed on his way ... read more

Journey and Arrival A quiet journey across the Serbian border and into Croatia, where a shopkeeper joins my cabin and we have a chat and a game of chess. Soon afterwards, a huge guy headed for Munich arrived and killed the conversation, so the remainder of the journey into Zagreb was pretty tedious. Out of the train and shortly later met Stipe in the station. Zagreb instantly struck me as a much more pretty city and I looked forward to it being better than Beograd. After grabbing some food and beer, and a tram down to Stipe's, we were ready to head into town. Sadly Stipe had work the next day (it was a Tuesday after all) but we still had time for a couple of drinks in the city centre. The first place we went ... read more

(Read this article on RoadJunky, at http://www.roadjunky.com/article/1804/sleazy-american-businessmen-in-zagreb) At 3 a.m, the topless hooker and the cocaine freak snuck off to a bedroom, leaving me alone with the old, Israeli bazillionaire and a box of hazelnut chocolates. I had an important choice to make. It was my first night in Zagreb and I was staying at a hostel down the road from the Dolac Market. After a long travel day I was in the mood for a drink, so I ordered an Ozujsko at one of the terraces along Tkalciceva Ulica and watched the people go by. Halfway through my beer, I noticed two American men standing outside the terrace, debating whether or not to come in for a drink. As soon as I heard them speak, I shouted out “English!” Not hearing my language for two ... read more

The main reason we’d started in Zadar was to make it nice and easy to head up to Plitvice Lakes National Park. From when we first started planning our trip to Croatia this was one place we were both really excited to see. The pictures explain it the best but its draw card is the fact that there are 16 turquoise lakes which are all linked by waterfalls and cascades etc. Pretty amazing to see. Now before I go on, there’s something that needs explaining….over the two weeks we were in Croatia Adam and I decided that generally I tend to curse god and shake my fist at the sky far too often to be healthy and that bad things are going to happen as a result. Sometimes Adam tends to walk at a distance in ... read more

Land of Beaches, Mountains and Tourists…Nope, It’s Not California Driving through most of Croatia, especially the Dalmatian Coast (yup, that’s right, this is where Dalmatians come from), you get the feeling that you are driving through a weird mixture of Italy and southern California. From tall craggy mountains lined with evergreens to cliff side villages filled with sunshine, you feel like you may turn the corner and see tall blond people drinking coffee at a nearby Starbucks. It just feels like California with a few differences. Much more like Italy, the major form of construction is bougainvillea houses with gleaming red tile roofs. Other than the still-being-built major highways, most of the roads throughout the country are windy two lane deals that vary in speed limit every 5 kilometers or so. People are much more ... read more

Pag was just a detour on the way to the Plitvice National Park which is far lusher and greener than anything else we had seen so far of Croatia. To get there we are now travelling inland on Croatia's lovely new motorways. i especially like the tunnels, one was 6kms long!! I have taken a video of this so those at home can also enjoy my motorway obsession. You lucky, lucky people!! The National Park is a bunch of lakes at different levels with a lot of waterfalls in between. Quite nice esppecially as you can catch a rubber tyred train up to the top and only have to walk down. I thought it was no nicer really than NZ, but it was more fun watching the locals and the germans who got all excited about ... read more

Leaving Split for Zagreb we got to do something we hadn't done for over a week - catch a train! After a lot of recent travel on buses, it was good to be back on the trains with the freedom to stretch our legs. The train from Split to Zagreb was only a short two carriage train, but it looked like a modern high speed train rather than the older looking trains we saw in Bosnia and Serbia, and best of all it had air conditioning that worked! Also, rather than have a dining car like the luxurious German and Austrian trains, the conductor came around and offered us sandwiches which were included in the price of our seat reservation. The train trip was relatively long and Kerrie decided to invent a new game with the ... read more

July 26, 2007 “Even that Little Kid is Doing Better than You” by Will After our getaway from Budapest we chose to take on a long drive through Hungary to the middle Croatia to Plitvice Lakes National Park. This destination was on our list to visit but it was some distance from Budapest. We just decided to go for it and take on the 7 hour drive and do it in one day. As it turned out Croatia has done wonders with their roads since the end of their war with Serbia 10+ years ago. They had a beautiful new toll road that essentially started from the border with Hungary to within 60 km of the park. We were zipping along…not as fast as all the BMW’s with German plates. They too were headed to Croatia ... read more
