Yesterday I did my sightseeing in Ljubljana, seeing the huge Saturday Market, some of the important buildings, several squares, a famous architect's house and such. It was a lot of fun, but not really that interesting for pictures. Had lunch at the same pizzeria that I had dinner at the other night. It was just as good. I had checked out of the hotel and left the car in the hotel parking lot, so I was able to wander around at will. Around 1 I grabbed the car and headed to Croatia. The drive was very easy. I had been on the roads around LJ enough that I knew where I was going. For the most part it was a freeway, although there were a few sections where they are building it, so it is a ... read more

October 2003 Zagreb - another dot on the travelblog map, but cheating a little bit I fear. Zagreb was only the eventual destination of this trip, but it was more of a circle of exploration courtesy of the by now usual cheap flights from Ryan Air. The parameters of the trip were the start point of Klagenfurt and the return journey from Graz 8 days later. The whole concept of the trip was in the hands of the punctuality of our chosen airline - a delay and we weren’t going to get much further than Klagenfurt by the end of Day 1 and the consensus was that we weren’t thinking of too many nights spending Schillings. The plane arrived on time and the efficiencies of the local Klagenfurt taxi firms allowed us to make the railway ... read more

Croatia's reputation as a summer playground may be growing, but it is also a fine destination out of season, when you can visit its wonderful attractions in splendid isolation. Wandering around the sleepy hilltop towns of Istria or the beautiful Diocletian's Palace in Split can be much more rewarding away from the push and shove of the tourist crowds. Dubrovnik in November was warm and pleasantly sunny, while it was peaceful too. No jostling for position on the city walls, no waiting for a table outside the cafes in the old town. So the days may be shorter and you'd be well advised to take a coat but you'll have time to soak up the views of the Adriatic and space to admire the Venetian architecture. The highlight of an out-of-season trip to Croatia has to ... read more

Hokey cokey here we go again. Firstly if you start getting z's where y's should be - my apologies as they are in different places on this keyboard, and for a touch typist that's not so good!!! So we left Gloucester and headed down to Dover and caught the 6.00pmish crossing. Nothing eventful to report on that front at all! We headed up the coast toward Oostende and then basically turned right and headed towards Dortmund. David took on the driving to start with whilst I navigated which wasn't overlz difficult!!! On making our right turn towards Dortmund we started to get snow. And it continued snowing, but despite the snow depth getting more the roads remained absolutley clear and we had no problems whatsoever! We pulled in at one the exceptionally frequent laybys and put ... read more

Zagreb was my destination for 2006/07 New Year's eve. Me and couple of friends of mine decided to go with the Taizé community, for the first time, as well. We were not really into that Taizé community, but we heard a lot of stories, mostly very positive, so we had nothing to worry about. The programme included 5 days, enough to make dear friends over there and to have a great time! The trip started from Subotica on December 27th with a group of local Taizé members. We had a night trip so next day we arrived to Zagreb, at a school where we were sent to different parts of Zagreb, parishes actually, where we were introduced to our hosts. My host was a really nice family. They hosted 3 of us from Vojvodina, 2 Hungarian ... read more

We stayed in bed whilst people began getting up around us. In dorm rooms you have two strategies for mornings; firstly you can try and get up first and beat everyone else to the bathroom, however this may easily fail if someone has an early train etc. The second (and preferred) option is to lounge around in bed until the majority of people have left and then use the hostel facilities at leisure. We opted for the second option and attempted to stay in bed until the majority of the Aussies were up. Irritatingly the hostel owners had chosen a period in time when every bed in the hostel was occupied to renovate the only shared bathroom. All sixteen people had to use one bathroom that was situated inside a private four bed dormitory. Eventually we ... read more

Getting up this morning was a bit of a farce because there were too many people trying to get through one bathroom. We waited until most people were awake before we got up and ready. Unfortunately the weather was bad and it took us a while to motivate ourselves to leave the warm dryness of the hostel. We attempted to get on the internet to send the obligatory "we're safe" e-mail, but there were just too many people in the small common room. We walked out of the hostel and into the rain. Rob immediately began complaining about people being lethal with their umbrellas which is something I have to endure on a regular basis. This time however he did have a point. More people here seem to have umbrellas and a lot of them are ... read more

Last night was the worst nights sleep I have had since we began travelling. It was around two in the morning before I dropped off. Around quarter past five we were abruptly woken by a group of men arriving at the hostel. With it being such a minute place, our beds were right by the front door. Not only did they talk loudly for ages but they left the door wide open until it was freezing inside. At one point Rob Sshhed them and one man just laughed. Eventually things quietened down and we thought we would get a few hours sleep at the very least. A man got into the bunk at the end of mine; I call him a man but a wild boar may be a more accurate description. Rob drifted back to ... read more

After the Italian ladies companion showed us the horse statue and the way to the city she ddeparrts and we are all smiles. We wasted what we didn't really realize was super precious time going to the info center, then the ticket booth with the semi-almost mean ladies and back to the info center twice. Going to the info center the third and last time was when we realized how precious time really was at this moment. We had 7 minutes to buy our tickets and find our train. Of course how there were two ladies infront of us ruining our lives. We got there and said "I need a ticket to Vienna that leaves like now, please." The woman looked at us and said "You CRAAZY" THe woman kicked the girl out of the seat ... read more
