Lennon, Lenin, Lion and Lloyd During our last week in Bulgaria we spent much time hiking in the mountains. We have decided to write about the hikes in a separate blog entry. The hiking blog w will start writing as soon as this one is finished. But in between the hikes we also had time to see and do some other things. Rila Monastery - In the first of our blog entries from Bulgaria we mentioned that if you make a list of the Top 100 Places You Must Visit in Europe it is quite possible that not a single one of them is in Bulgaria. But if you expand that list to Top 200... it is quite possible that Rila Monastery makes it into the list. If you travel in Bulgaria this is a place ... read more

July 11 Tuesday Got up at 5:30 to reorganize my items to fit the new fan in the large blue bag. Had a nice breakfast and then we left the hotel at 8 to head for Sophia, Bulgaria. The trip to Nis, our rest stop for lunch, was uneventful. Small towns, farmlands, and an occasional factory. The homes that we passed ranged from slightly dilapidated to nice well manufactured homes. Some had large balconies along the second floor. We did pass a cemetery or two for the first time. Niš is the third largest city of Serbia and the administrative center of the Nišava District in southern Serbia. According to the 2011 census, the urban area of Niš has population of 187,544, while the administrative area has a population of 260,237 inhabitants. It is one of ... read more

It seems that all roads lead through Skopje and I made my way back there for a third time to get a bus to Sofia. Thanks to the political situation around borders, there is no direct bus from Pristina to Sofia as you would have to go through Serbia. At the bus station in Pristina, I met Eric, an American going the same way. Once we got to Skopje, we then met Frenchman Pierre, who was at the same hostel as me in Pristinaand was also making his way to Sofia. So suddenly I had a crew which to be honest, is nice to have on long journeys. The Bulgarian countryside is actually pretty nice. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but I was impressed by the pretty plains, rolling hills and green forests, which ... read more

Marching on Together. In the days of old when a team in white were worrying Europe's elite and winning more than just the highest "away" crowd average award at each venue they visited, Sofia welcomed their presence. A snow covered Moscow was deemed too cold for UEFA Cup football by the mandarins in Switzerland. On 2 December 1999, the bandwagon rolled into town. Programme Man's finest hour had arrived. He organised Marching on Together playing out of the tannoy at the Stadium. The team couldn't reward the support and were rolled over by Spartak's Brazialian forwards. For the first time on the trip, the sun was shining when we ventured out of the hotel. The city was waking up and the stalls for a book fair were setting up further along Vitosha Boulevard. The dome of ... read more

The Man in the Middle woke with ideas of mountaineering. I took one look at the weather out the window and suggested that the gloom could be against us. He was obviously fortified by his traditional sausage meal. The weather refused to be an obstacle to his mission. Clouds and mountains don't mix, but we set off regardless. The first mission was an all-day ticket for the metro, trams and buses. The ticket office at the adjacent Metro Station round the corner was the obvious place to start. Do you speak English, we inquired? It never ceases to amaze me, when the answer suggests perhaps one or two words to get by and then a perfect explanation of requirements follows. It wasn't quite that this time, but bonus points should be awarded anyway if they can ... read more

The Man in the Middle surveyed the departure board at Luton Airport. A board of outbound flights showed all on time with the exception of the 1420 hours to Sofia. Disappointing – we had an appointment to keep on arrival. Disappointment turned to despair on the discovery that the bar had one option of alcohol on offer – lukewarm bottles of Heineken at a ridiculous price. There should be a law against it. As the fantasy of a quiet couple of pints before take-off evaporated, we were pleased to see that the delay was only half an hour. It was football derby weekend across Europe. Inter v Milan, Red Star v Partizan – not for us this time – we were headed for the original Sofia derby, Slavia v Levski. After a further delay on the ... read more

Itinerary - Journey, by way of Nis, to the border and cross into Bulgaria continuing to Sofia, the Bulgarian capital. Explore the city on an included sightseeing tour with a local guide, including highlights such as the Parliament building, Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, St George Rotunda Church, National Theatre and St Sofia Church. Wake up call… 6.30am Bags out… 7.15am Departure… 8am Another nice and early wake up call for us all!! I’m starting to get used to these now. We packed out bags, and headed down for breakfast. I have no idea what happened during the night but I was eaten alive by mosquitos. Some of the guys thought it was spider bites and bed bugs… *shudders* either was it was not fun. Anyway, headed down for breakfast and again it as very eastern European, there ... read more

Geo: 42.7105, 23.3238(By popular demand, I've included a picture of the skinny lion. It's from a distance, so you can't really tell it has a mohawk, but check out those ribs!)Breakfast this morning was the usual European array of meats, cheeses, yogurt, muesli, breads - both savory and sweet - eggs and bacon. Also, stewed vegetables, olives, celery sticks and sliced tomatoes. I had a nice conversation with Barb from Illinois/Arizona (and who looks so much like a Barb that it would be weird if she were called something else) and Ray from Camano Island. He makes glass art (not blown glass though), and his wife was wearing a pretty example of some earrings he made.We met in the lobby at 8:55 for our walking tour of Sofia. It was very cool this morning, which I ... read more

Geo: 42.7105, 23.3238I slept well last night, despite the disco or party or whatever it was nearby that had a continuous boom-boom-boom bass-y sort of noise. Actually, it sounded more like the noise an MRI machine makes than musical bass but, as there was singing too, I assume there wasn't some sort of mass imaging festival going on.The shower was decent. Even the Worst Hairdryer in the World™ wasn't so bad!Ham and cheese croissant and a ginormous mocha at Costa down the road, then a stroll over to the park where the monument to the Soviet (not Russian) Army is. Climbed up the stairs to the base of the column and felt really quite high up, even though I wasn't. Looking back the way I came, there's a very large paved area leading nearly back to ... read more

Geo: 42.7105, 23.3238My flight was at 1:43, so naturally we left the house at 10:35 (well, it is the Friday of Labor Day weekend!) and got to SeaTac just after 11:00. My flight was booked through KLM, but Delta operates the flights out of Seattle to Amsterdam. Bag drop was a little chaotic and took maybe 15 minutes, but then I discovered that I'd been selected for TSA Pre-Check, which meant that I could just march right up to the conveyor belt, plop my carry-on down, and go through the scanner. No taking out my liquids or laptop; no taking off my shoes and sweater. Pretty slick! I wonder how I can get selected every time I fly. (I was actually behind three JAL flight crew. It was like this was their first time through security. ... read more
