Geo: 42.7252, 25.4815It was so quiet during the night, and I actually slept really well. The mattress wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. The shower was … just a tiny corner of the tiny bathroom; there was either scalding water or lukewarm water. I chose lukewarm and only did a super-quick rinse. Will be happy to wash my hair tomorrow.Walked out a little early to see the monastery empty. I was the only person out there for five minutes or so, and then people in the group started to join in. The monks were singing in the church, and the sun was trying to peek through the clouds. It was very peaceful. We all went to breakfast at the same restaurant as last night. Going outside afterward, I looked down over a railing and ... read more

We decided to split the Bucharest - Istanbul journey up a little so we took a night off Bucharest to spend "somewhere" in Bulgaria. On the advice of someone we briefly met this place turned out to be Plovdiv, a small and pretty old town in the south. The drive was long, but made manageable by the good views across Bulgaria. It was much prettier and the roads were much better than we all expected. The Romania-Bulgaria boarder took a while due to the bridge being under repair but a bit of football with the boarder guards made that wait easier. Early start today and now we're off to Turkey. We're expecting this to be the first long wait at a boarder crossing, but who knows :) I'll update you all tonight if I'm not shattered! ... read more

It has taken me a few weeks back home to get round to writing this .... I want to share what a fabulous place Plovdiv is. I left Lorraine and Keith and set off in a bus from VT to Plovdiv... now a word about bus travel in Bulgaria... it could be a large coach or it could be a mini bus... and so far I haven't seen any modern versions and certainly no toilets on board . So you need to check if they make comfort stops. On this particular journey the plus was the driver made several stops, but the minus was it was a very tatty old mini bus but hey it was cheap and got me to my destination even it it took five hours. And of course you get to see ... read more

PLOVDIV AND CENTRAL BULGARIA From a pleasant, but unremarkable camp on the banks of Lake Iskar, the road to the east toward Plovdiv improved. So also did the general outlook. Away from the feral looking south west, agriculture looks more productive with broad acre farming across a broad plain showing how well this land can produce. Now that Bulgaria is in the EU, those farmers who have recognised the opportunity are said to be doing very well. When we passed through we saw auto headers and other modern machinery reaping excellent looking yields of wheat while sunflowers decorated alternate paddocks. All this under a hot sun hardening seeds to a high quality. What a different face we saw in Plovdiv. In the south west of Bulgaria people may have all but given up. In Plovdiv the ... read more

Not a gelato but an ice cream today and this time it was the first I have ever had that was weighed in the cone and charged according to the weight! We decided on breakfast BBA V2 style despite the price in the hotel restaurant only being Lev4 each. You can never be sure what you are going to get and we like to get a serving of yogurt inside us each day and we still had toast bread from the other day to clean off. We had had a long Skype call the Chris and Marilyn last night and hadn't got to bed until after midnight so we were a bit slow in emerging this morning not that we had a great deal planned for the day. We had observed the bus numbers travelling up the ... read more

As we had hoped the weather had cleared away from yesterday, well at least it was that way at dawn.Within an hour fog had enveloped the valley we looked out on and the mountains in the distance and we had to wait until the rising sun burnt the fog off to get the views we had hoped for of the fresh snow on the mountains. In the meantime we went down for breakfast and attentive as ever 'Boris' took our order for omelettes and coffee. The omelettes were a bit different than what we were used to and had crispy edges as if they had been fried. All the same they were tasty and very filling. Back up on our balcony we watched the village come to life with locals with their horse and carts passing by either with ... read more

Once again, it seems, I have gotten very behind in my blogging. For our Easter trip this year, we decided to be brave and adventurous and attempt traveling using only public transportation to visit Bulgaria and Romania. So on Good Friday, we boarded a bus headed for Skopje, spent the night there, and were up early the next morning for another six hour bus ride to Sofia, Bulgaria. Unfortunately, Sofia was not our final destination, so we hopped a train in a decidedly Eastern Block era trains station and continued on to Plovdiv. Completely exhausted when we reached Plovdiv, we found a taxi and discovered that our hotel - though wonderful - was neither near the train station nor the old town. Per the staff's recommendation, we headed to a Greek restaurant for dinner where we ... read more
