Day 36: 31st. July: Week 6: VIENNA: Temp 26C: As we started on the next adventure we looked back at Venice as the train sped out across the flats into areas of green pastures and hills and into the mountains - such very different scenery. Arriving in Vienna at 11.45pm. we taxied to our hostel (Vienna Hostel Huttledorf) where the staff were waiting and greeted us warmly. We had a 4 bunk room for the 2 of us so lower bunks each and private bathroom. Good!!.
Day 37: 1st. August: Vienna: Temp 29C: Early brekky of cereal, bread, water, coffee or tea, fresh fruit. Down the road to the bus and only 2 stops (so well within easy walking distance) to the station and the U4 train into town. A short walk about then onto a City Tour bus to get the layout of the city - very interesting. A must do in Vienna is to see the Horses, the Vienna Boys Choir and the Opera. Well, it was school holidays and all three events were on holidays also - so anyone going to Wien especially to see those events would be very disappointed. * We purchased a
Vienna Card - 72 hours. Check on Internet.
Day 38: 2nd. August: Vienna: Temp 33C: Into town again and walked and walked around and around, in and out and all about and on the tram to the Ferris Wheel as the day got hotter and hotter we made our way to the river and sat with our feet in the Danube. Eventually returning to the hostel we decided to have a meal there - not the best meal ever.
Day 39: 3rd. August: Vienna: Temp 26C: We walked through the State Park and around a few of the state buildings, onto the No2 tram to the end of the line and back, more of a walk around the city before heading back to the hostel for our last night and a storm with thunder and lightning. MacDonalds is a good place to eat and the toilets are clean.
Day 40: 4th. August: SALZBURG: Temp 19C - !6C: Up early and down to the nearby station where we boarded the train - so easy not having to go far with cases. After training through lovely countryside of hills and mountains we arrived at 2pm., had
lunch and caught the No. 3 bus to the hostel (Hostel Edvard Heinrich Haus). We had a big family room for the 2 of us with our own separate bathroom and toilet.
Day 41: 5th. August: Salzburg: Temp 24C: Breakfast are getting better. Water/Juices; yoghurt; tinned fruit; cheese x 2; meats x2l rolls; jam x2; tea selection and coffee. Into town and onto the HOP ON , HOP OFF bus and off at the Leopoldskron Palace where the Sound of Music was filmed. We waited 1 1/2 for the bus hmmmm. Back into town for lunch, a river cruise and a walk around the Old Town. By the bus stop near the hostel is a good health food shop with such a variety of cheese and meats and anything else in the food line so our tea was bought there. NOTE: none of the hostels in Europe where we stayed had kitchens where you could cook your own meal.
Day 42: 6th. August: Salzburg: Temp 26C: Today we went into town and up to the castle - fortress , wandered around and climbed steps into the very interesting rooms of relics and memorabilia; to the ramparts
where the views were remarkable and had lunch at the restaurant - beef stroganoff with a bread dumpling and 1/2 pint of beer. The next stop was the Katakombs in the monastery gardens, the Abbey and a walk through another section of town before heading back to the hostel. Fabulous day out.
