Safety Regulations?
An unattended crane where cyclist walk their bikes under the beam! Not in Australia. No alarm set for this morning as we'll be in Vienna well before our check-in time. We have a very leisurely breakfast and have a chat to two Americans who are riding the length of the Danube. They're thinking about coming to do some riding in Australia and asked if Darwin was a good place to start. Hopefully we've set them straight.
We ride out of Tulln just after 9am and make our way to the river which will take us all the way to Vienna.
Just after we leave Tulln behind we see a girl riding in front of us with a jersey that says Australia on her back. We both look t each other and think, great an other Aussie to talk to. Leena was actually German and her friend had given her the Jersey. We did end up riding with, and talking, to her for the majority of the ride into Vienna though. She had plucked up the courage to get herself and bike from Munich to Passau and ride from there to Vienna by herself.
As expected we got to Vienna a bit too early to check-in so we rode into the city. We
only caught a little glimpse but there will certainly be a lot to explore over the next couple of days. We called Tom to make sure he had arrived OK and he had already put his bike together at the airport and was about to start his 20km ride to our accommodation. We arrived at our apartment at about 1pm. Its about 8kms from the city so we'll either have to ride in or catch public transport. Tom turned up at about 1:30pm. It was good to see the big fella and have the 3 Amigos back together again.
We were wondering where our host was and when he was going to let us in. I checked my emails and had missed an email from him. The key had been under the mat the whole time we had been waiting!
The apartment has 4 levels. 3 above ground and 1 below. Three bedrooms, two ensuites, a big family room, well appointed kitchen and most importantly a washing machine and dryer. It's just senational despite it's distance from the city.
We settle in, get some washing done, do some shopping and go out for dinner. The whole dynamic
Make that 12 Cruise oats parked
They are stacked 3 deep from the bank x 4 boats in length!!!! of the trip will change now. Jeff and I have settled into a rhythm that has worked for us and we have covered just on 2,500kms together and completed the Western Europe of our ride - quite an achievement in its own right. We'll find a new rhythm with the 3 of us no doubt as we head into Eastern Europe. We're considering a route change to get to Istanbul due to the amount of climbing involved. We'll discuss that over the next few days. For the next two days we'll be tourists in Vienna (I wonder if they have Go-Karts here?)
Distance travelled today: 51kms
Distance travelled so far: 2,494kms (+10kms riding in Tulln yesterday afternoon = 2,504kms)
