We strolled into the modern part of town for dinner last night. We found an outdoor restaurant that was packed. There was an Austrian band playing, with lots of brass instruments included, they really had the place engaged with everyone clapping along. As it was so busy we were seated at a bench table with 3 others who also happened to be cyclists. The pertinent information we found out from them was that August 15th is a public holiday and everything will be closed. This was significant because we planned on going past the supermarket on our way out of town in the the morning to pick up our days supplies. We scoffed down dinner and made it to the supermarket before it closed - disaster averted.
Another short days ride so there's no rush in the morning. We eat our breakfast purchased the night before before heading off to Tulln, our last stop before Vienna.
The first few kilometers we are negotiating our way out of town back towards the river. We then have about 5kms of industrial area and train tracks we cycle through before finally getting back to the river. As we ride along we can
see that the river is noticeably wider here than it was in Melk. There are numerous little branches off the river that splinter out and rejoin. It means that we have to divert around most of them. This pushes our path into the forested area around the river giving us a change of scenery and some welcome cool air. At other places we see people swimming on the little off shoots, I guess it's what you do when you're hundreds of kilometers from the ocean.
Another thing we saw today were coxed fours canoes that were fitted out for touring, as in they were rowing along the Danube. Getting around the locks would be a chore but what a way to travel.
With only 43kms to travel the distance shrinks quickly. It looks like we'll be in to Tulln by about 11:30am until Jeff registers his second puncture of the trip. He did have the decency to do it by the shade of a big tree that had a bench seat under it. The puncture was due to his rim tape slipping so nothing like electrical tape to come to rescue. This meant we cruised into Tulln around
12:30pm and with the public holiday it looked like a ghost town. Our hotel is smack bang in the middle of the town square which is a great location even if there isn't much going on.
I did venture out for a ride around town and there was still some action down on the river front with a cruise boat docked there. Gotta stay open to milk the tourist boat when it arrives! It looked like there were still a few places open where we can get dinner so we wont starve tonight (although missing a meal or 3 might not be a bad idea the way we're going).
Tomorrow we finally get into Vienna and meet up with Tom which means the original 3 Amigos who, in 2011, travelled to France to ride some mountains and see Cadel Evans win the Tour de France will be back together again for an Eastern Europe Adventure.
