The hills are alive
The sound of music bus... What better way to describe this beautiful place, also where the Sound of Music was filmed so the explanation is perfect...
And what better way to start a visit in Salzberg than to go on a sound of music tour!! This was awesome! It was four hours of film locations and the wonderful music from the movie.. The scenary was fantastic as well, so even Dan enjoyed it, definately worth taking the tour because if nothing else the hills are alive! Found out some interesting facts about the movie as well.. Like the hill that they cross right at the end of the film.. Half that mountain is in Austria, the other half in Germany! it doesnt lead to the Swiss Alps.. Kinda defeats the purpose of running from the Nazis hey hehe..
This wonderful tour was followed up by a wonder around Old TOwn where we came across an IRISH PUB!! ANd yes it had cider! Not only that but we scored free whiskey and directions to the best steak ever from the Pommy bartender! Not bad for an afternoons work!
A trip to the Bavarian Mountains and the Salt Mines was next on the cards.. I
The Von Trapp house
Not really but it is where they filmed the lake scenes, this is not the house used though.. Best part about travelling with someone.. I get to be in photos!! cant describe the scenary here hey, tops everything I´ve seen so far and I would recommend Salzberg as a must see to anyone who asked! Salt Mines were very cool, no photography allowed though which sucked but you got to ride this massive slide (or as Brad would say a big f*** off slide hehe) down, 200metres below ground after going on a train ride 100 odd feet into the mountain side... Awesome! Met a couple who live in Murdoch too in Perth.. Small bloody world!!
Yet another killer walk led to the top of Festung hohensalzberg, a massive fortress in the middle of the city.. Definately one of the biggest castles I´ve visited but it also definately had THE best view, it was phenomanal and once again well worth the hike simply to see the view..
last stop on the Salzberg train was a trip to the ice caves, now boys you warned me about the walk up to the caves, never mentioned anything about the hike INSIDE the caves! OMG! 1400steps in freezing temperatures!! very nice for a while after walking 20mins uphill, catching a cable car and then walking another 20mins uphill in the blistering
heat.. You also failed to mention Id have to endure a blow job before enterting the caves (Sorry been travelling with boys for 2weeks, been bad influences!), yes thats right, as the doors to the caves open 50km/hr winds push you back, making it extremely difficult to breathe as you enter the caves.. Amazing how calm it is inside afterwards tho...ANd again on the way out.. Ur pushed out the door, unbelievable because 2seconds earlier you were standing in a totallz calm cave..Ive been told you had to do this tour on a nice day and we certainly had one today, made the hike hard but once again the views were definately worth it.. inside the cave itself was a little disappointing as there was very little light so you couldnt see too much, no photos were allowed and the guide (altho rather good looking!!) spoke mostly in Deutsch.. Still worth the trip nevertheless...
Think Im definately at the point where I want to come home now... Always happens when I speak to people from home... But yeh with 3weeks to go, I think im happy to be going home and am looking forward to it :=)
