Up with Alarms at 8AM to see we are already in dock at St Thomas which is one of the US Virgin Islands. A couple of fried eggs for breaky with OJ and cereal and we are ready to get off the Ship for our only pre-organised excursion.
Weather was slightly overcast and around 30 degrees.
We are off for a 4 hour trip to Trunk Bay which is on the neighbouring island of St John. We have to get another boat to take us there (just what we need !). It’s about a 40 minute boat ride a bit rough as we cross where the Carribean Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean and the currents are really strong.
There is lots of development of the coastline but not overdeveloped. As we head out our guide Jimmie tells us there are two private islands for sale. However you need to buy both together for a cool $27M.
When we arrived in St John we boarded a local Taxi for the 10 minute drive to Trunks Bay beach. Not your typical Taxi here but more like a super sized Tuk Tuk as it is a van that has five
rows of seats each 5 across.
When arrived at the beach we were told we had about 1.5 hours of free time. At this beach the water is beautiful in colour and it is one of the best beaches in the world where you can snorkel from the beach to the coral reef that surrounds the island which is just 100 metres from the beach.
This is all part of a National Park and they have created a snorkel trail where you follow some underwater signs which direct you to points of interest and help identify some of the fish species (pretty cool idea !). The water depth was about 12-18 feet and you could easily see the bottom as you floated around. No water camera so you will just have to believe me on that one.
Not much colour in the coral, but interesting and lots of different fish species to see. I stayed out there for about 1 hour and when I came in Luke told me he had seen a stingray.
We went to get some lunch from the snack bar but the queue was really long and only just got our order
before we had to head back to the taxi to go to the boat. This place had sea gulls with black heads which looked really weird but they love eating hot chips and some girl was getting attacked by about 10 of them when she left the snack bar.
We got back to St Thomas around 2.30PM so we had about an hour of shopping time before we had to get back on board. The Ship was conveniently docked right next to Havensight Mall so Kerry & I had a look around. Before long she was happy to find some Chanel No 5 really cheap stuff. Kerry bought some cool and comfy Thongs made in Brazil and I bought a T-Shirt with US Virgin Islands motif, and we got back on the Ship.
After Dinner we decided to see the Show which was a celebration of Beatles music. Great choreography and good fun, as the Orchestra was really good and some innovative arrangements to some of the songs. Nick Mast is the male singer and he is really good.
After that we went to Mad Hatters Ball to catch some Karaoke and this was a mixed bag.
An old guy called Ted sang well, a young black girl showed off her moves and we had another disaster performance from Michelle. There was some guy called Carlos from New York who Kerry & I met at lunch a few days earlier who sand a great rendition of an old 50‘s classic (Run Around Sue).
