The following two days we went to other islands, going through some of the most beautiful landscapes I had seen. Islands with indian huts, the ocean so transparent that one could see the coral reefs at the bottom and green mountains on our right side. We had meals cooked by the locals, fresh lobster and fish. Phil was making the best of his British humor, Ross and Greg were reading most of the time, Paul was snorkling (he agreed to snorkle the way between two islands, but it turned out being a lot farther than he had thought), Eva was looking cute and Sjoerd was sleeping. Sjoerd was sick and slept most of the time during the 5 days. After three days in paradise we left for Cartagena, which was only 200 miles away. On the ... read more

Soon after the last posting I did a few more reasonably constructive things, and here´s a quick rundown/summary of what came to be after leaving David: (You read me wrong audience, for your information ´David´ is a town , not a guy - let´s get that straight for starters) BOQUETE: a lovely, sweet, small and charming town an hour from David in the Chiriqui highlands. Rivers run through it, with a lush green landscape, it has no humidity, a lack of travellers & a few sheep up in the hills - I loved it , it reminded me of home. I attempted to climb Volcan Baru for about 3 hours but was still 9km from the top, running out of water & food, getting headaches, it pissed down, the views were awful (because there weren´t ... read more

This was one of those trips in which very little planning was involved. I had been looking at the American Airlines flights to Panama and saw that they were open and decided to go. Wednesday July 13 I left Indy at 1pm on an American Eagle EMB-145 to Miami and then took an American 757 to Panama City. I arrived in Panama that evening and took a taxi to the city. It took about 30 minutes to get there on the modern toll road. It was raining real hard with lightning and thunder. I love those kind of storms! It was about 9pm, so I just went to sleep. I stayed at the Hotel Roma Plaza for $35 a night and enjoyed the stay. It was conveniently located with a friendly staff and the rooms were ... read more

I know I'm more than 10 days late, but there is too much to talk about and too little time left before I have to be in Brazil, so please be patient. For a quick update: I'm still in Colombia and I'm loving it. I just finished a diving course at Tayrona National Park, area controlled by the paramilitary, so it's pretty safe for turists. I'm heading to Venezuela tomorrow. First day on boat: The group on the boat was composed of the capitan, Hernando Higuera, five of guys from the hostel, myself and a Dutch girl that we were going to meet in El Porvenir, where the boat was going to leave from. Some gender imbalance there? You can add that the boat is 33 feet in length and smaller than my kitchen in Oakland ... read more

The end of the saga... The owners of the hostel found out that I had lost my place in the boat and intervened. They told the capitan that the list had to be respected regardless of the person's presence in the meeting. So I got my place back! We are leaving on Tuesday. I just have to survive one more day in Panama city. I´ve been receiving requests from people that need information about boats from Panama to Colombia and vice versa, so here it is, Google it: Boat Panama Cartagena I had contact with capitan Peter Rippingale by phone and e-mail, but our dates didn´t match. He seems to have a nice boat. His phone number: in Cartagena is: + (575) 3114190428 in Panama is : + (507) 535 0356 p_rippingale@yahoo.co.uk "i offer good food, ... read more

FINALLY we found Cristina!! Gracias Ana! And FINALLY Brad is ok again. Thank God! Cristina threatened to send him to the hospital for some miracle shot they gave her little sister (through a whopping great syringe!) just a few days earlier...suddenly Brad was feeling much better! Being a big city girl, Cristina took us to all the upmarket, airconditioned malls in town, with huge food-plazas, cinemas and arcade-game joints..and STORES!! Brad got a sk8 pin, Sara got some nice jeans, and we both got lucky when Cristina decided to shout us a meal or two...trying to fit in half the national delights she could think of..all at once! Aha, and Madagascar (the latest addition to the long list of animated animal movies), is a big laugh...at least in Mexican Spanish, órale compadre!! The second day doing ... read more

Yesterday Lucia, Eloisa's sister, and I went to a beach on the Pacific side. It was a one and half hour ride in a small and uncomfortable bus to a tinny village called Rio Mar, from where we walked about 15 minutes under a blazing sun to the beach. The beach was gorgeous and was virtually deserted in spite of being Saturday. Lucia told me that that's something that sets Panama appart from most of Central America. It has a lot of beaches and a really small population, the whole country has less than 3 milllion people. Turism is not strong as in other countries like Costa Rica, so the beaches are never crowded. We spent a lazy day on the beach and headed back around 6pm. I must have got back to the hostel at ... read more

After the Blue Thunder handover i started the 3rd stage of the trip, from Panama to Brazil, without a travel companion. I finally found a boat to Colombia, I had to move to the hostel that would only give information to guests. It's nice to be among travelers again. The boat leaves Monday, so I have some time to kill in Panama. I'm planing to go to a beach on the Carribean side. ... read more

Slow days in Panama. Last night, and the night before that, Brad had a bad fever, shivers and muscle pain....he sweat so much we had to wring his t-shirt out this morning!! Spent the night worried changing cold wet towels on his hot forehead. Please pray for him, don't know if it's a bacteria from all that tapwater we've been gulping or a nasty mosquito bite... In between long stints in the hotel-room trying to recover watching Alf and Magnum dubbed to Espanish (no wonder Brad's sick!), we've done hours of cruising round town on public transport..old American school buses covered in graffiti-like murals and everything from Bible verses to old girlfriends' names adorning thier windshields...not to mention the loud loud cumbia, reggaeton and salsa hits pumping the whole way... Roligt. Yesterday, we were trying to ... read more
