We are now Panama bound! Luckily we have Karin "the meatball" Dahl and Blair "the Kiwi" Neal joining us on our first leg directly from Florida to Panama. Ok... It would of been direct if Cuba wasn't in the way. For those of you with the geography background we had... you may want to review the map on this site... but yes, Cuba tends to be in the way of a big downwind sail. Though we would of particularly enjoyed stopping in for a mojito and a cigar, but alas... they want us keeping at LEAST 12 miles off their shore. Fair enough. We thought keeping 13.1 miles away on Sorcerer was cutting it close, but nah.... that was nuthin. After sailing successfully through what we would describe as square waves in a washing machine as ... read more

…and then we woke up and there was this huge double rainbow in the sky. We followed it to where it ended on an island where there were no clouds, no rain, and the sun was shining bright. We hiked up the pristine mountain and along the way discovered an indigenous tribe that had never come into contact with the modern world. They served us the most amazing Christmas dinner (even though they, of course, didn’t know it was Christmas). Then they led us down to the beach where there just happened to be scuba gear waiting for us. We geared up and dropped down into the crystal clear turquoise waters. We saw giant rays, purple octopus, and then a Whale Shark! We followed the Whale Shark to a Mermaid village where the Mermaids welcomed us ... read more

We are still hanging out in Santa Fe. We took a short trip to Santa Catalina to visit the beach and take a vacation from our vacation. We stayed at a great little hostal called the Blue Zone. It had hammocks overlooking the Pacific Ocean. There is a huge hype right now about this little town, but we just couldn´t see it. It has a very small beach. It is suppose to be excellent for surfers so maybe that is why we didn´t quite get into it. We did have some great food at a little restaurant called Donde Vianca. Not only did she have great food, she was about the only restaurant open for lunch. We are not quite sure where the tourists are suppose to eat there (although there aren´t many tourists there). Not ... read more

OK..not really a lot of moving around since we last blogged. We did, however, decide that we liked Santa Fe so much we wanted to stay for a while (or forever?). We managed to find a house for rent. It is a fantastic little 3 bedroom house with no hot water, but...it has an indoor flush toilet! It is very quiet and nestled back from the road. The only bad thing we have discovered is the chitras (sand fleas). They come out about 4 pm and last until around 7 pm. We are beginning to wonder what it is like to not itch! We are surrounded by orange, lime, manderine and mango trees and several other plants that we can eat or make cocktails with. If only they would have left us some chickens, we would ... read more

Here we are, once again! This is the first time we have actually travelled on a bus for an hour and a half to use the internet! Since we last wrote we have travelled up to Santa Fe. It is a cute little town in the center of Panama and mountainous. There is excellent hiking here and many rivers that are very clean. The little town itself has no road signs and no real organization, but it is fun watching the wandering cows graze in the market. Before coming to Santa Fe we made a quick stop at Las Olas (the waves) to celebrate our anniversary. It was an all inclusive 3 day stay. John surprised me with a nice bottle of champagne delivered to our room. Apparently it was suppose to be delivered while we ... read more

We woke up early and traveled North to the town of San Francisco. The health fair last year was held at the school in San Francisco. They used the facility to treat around 7,000 Guaymis Indians. This year the health fair took place in Sante Fe which is further north and therefore closer to the bulk of the indians the health fair served. The health fair took place a couple of weeks before we arrived and it sounds as though it was another exciting event. They served even more people than the previous year. The school that hosted the health fair last year also serves meals for a large portion of the surronding area. In many cases it is the only nutrious food the children recieve. They serve around 800 people a day. They took us ... read more

On the first morning in Santiago, the Santiago Rotary Club got us up early and we headed out into the countryside to see three projects that are being funded by the District major grant. Getting to the projects took quite some time due to rough roads. The first one took us several kilometers up and down very rugged roads and through several streams. I was thankful it was the dry season because I am not sure we could have made it otherwise. When traveling by car sometimes you forget how remote these people are. When you see people walking by or riding a horse you have to be amazed at how much time is spent traveleling and how difficult it would be to get simple things from a store or medical care. Getting to school in ... read more
