Yesterday was pretty boring. Because I was up so late the night before, I slept till 12, hung out in my house until 4:30 eating dry cereal, then went up to the office to use the internet. I wanted to eat pasta, but couldn't figure out how to use the stove. I think you have to light it, but the lighter that was sitting there didn't work. Then, I looked up some information on storm Sandy and was really bummed about missing the storm of a lifetime. I went back to my house and opened the jelly even though I can't refrigerate it. It's pretty cold in my house anyway. I had Pb&J, more dry cereal and then killed a really big spider. The End... read more

Yesterday was a great day. I woke up at 8 and hung out at my house until 11:30, when I went up to the main office area and saw that the other girls were working on a Saturday! I helped them out until they were ready for lunch and then I ate some really weird tropical fruit, flour, sugar, and water chowder-like mixture that we then added cheese to. Strange. After lunch I practiced my Spanish on duolingo and my parents Facetimed me. I’m pretty bummed that I’m going to miss the once-in-a-lifetime-storm! Anyway, the first thing that the one girl, Indira asked me when I got to Finca Dracula was “Do you like to party?” Now, granted, she doesn’t speak English, so you have to take the brashness of that question with a grain of ... read more

Yesterday, I woke up and finally got the hot shower I’ve been wanting. Well, maybe hot isn’t the right word. Luke warm? Better than freezing cold, anyway. After getting ready and eating a handful of cereal at my house since my milk was in the refrigerator up near the office, I looked around my house for salamanders for a little while. When I got bored, I made my way up to the main office and started going through scientific papers once again. I don’t know why I thought that would be less boring. After a while, I noticed that the other girls were outside repotting orchids, so I asked “Puedo ayudar?” or “Can I help?” They said “Sí” and I joined in the festivities. Eventually, they all decided it was time for lunch, so we all ... read more

I have a feeling every day is going to get harder before it gets any easier. Yesterday was a tough one. I slept from 9pm to 9am, just like I did the night before. I had an excuse the night before, as I was running on four hours of sleep, but I should probably stop sleeping twelve hour nights. That can’t be good for me. Anyway, I went into the bathroom, hoping for a hot shower and was disappointed once again. I did a sponge bath and then just put my head in the shower to wash my hair with my jeans and sneakers on. That turned out to be a bad idea- the rest of the day I had cold feet from my wet shoes! I forgot to eat breakfast, grabbed my laptop, and headed ... read more

It's beautiful and I love it here, but the whole "speaking spanish thing" is really hard! Yesterday I woke up and walked over to my bathroom to grab a shower. Unfortunately, the water never got warm. I don't mind a cold shower when I'm in 85+ degree weather, but it's only around 60 degrees here and the only heat in my house is from the fireplace that I haven't lit yet. I finished getting ready, ate some cereal, and walked up to the main office where I pretty much sat all day looking at scientific papers and social networking. I left at one point to go look for salamanders. As I was walking down the path, I ran into one of Erik Lindquist's friends, Adolfo. After five minutes of trying to get across to him that ... read more

We just had a delicious lunch so after writing this blog l shouldn’t be too hungry. Our motto is: “you have to eat so it might as well be good!” Cooking is like solving a puzzle, see what ingredients and spices go together and prepare it. The best part is eating it! Hubert and l love to cook together, we both have our designated cooking places and it works fine. He used to cook the meat (while we were still on Atkins diet) and l am the Spice Queen. Also we love to deep fry food and Hubert is in charge of that too. In the morning when we are sipping our coffee we start talking about what’s for lunch. Thinking of what we have in the fridge and pantry and if we need to go ... read more

Today I learned more about cigars than I ever thought mattered. Apparently it did matter because, even though neither my wife nor I smoke, we both bought cigars to try. Talking with the owner of Panama Caribbean Tobacco, David Reynaga, we learned how tobacco is grown, dried, prepped, sorted, rolled, shaped, finished, labeled, packaged, and ultimately marketed and sold. We were told the gift cigars we bought for $4.00 would retail in Panama City for at least $7.00, and in the U. S. they could sell for $15 or more. There were a few surprises in store, like cigars in shapes like a pipe, a hockey stick, and pencil-thin miniature cigars. There was even a monster cigar, and no serious cigar lover would attempt to light up such a manly smoke without a couple hours to ... read more

Verbal Faux Pas are a part of learning any language. As you struggle to remember a word you replace that word in a sentance with anther word similar in spelling or sound because that is what your brain conjures up in order to fill the gap or the long silence. I have been working very hard at speaking spanish but with each new day as I learn a different tense of a verb, it takes me 3 times as long to say one sentance as I have to question exactly what tense I performed the action in. I believe there are more than 8 tenses in Spanish for one verb. So you can imagine my conversations in the morning with my host family as I try and tell a story, dictionary in hand. My host brother ... read more

Panama is great! The country offers free medical to tourists for the first 30 days you are here. I do not yet know of any other country which offers that services. I bought travel insurance before I left unaware of this gratis service. My own travel insurance costs $80 and includes evacuation so can someone please tell me why it is cheaper to have international medical insurance than medical insurance in the USA? Knowing I was covered should anything happen here, I thought I would put it to the test by trying rock climbing, I did not know it would be during the earthquake in Coast Rica though. Mom and Dad I AM OKAY! If you are going to try and climb the volcanic cliffs of Boquete I highly recommend going with Ceasar. Ceasar is the ... read more
