We had a lovely breakfast and great coffee at our hostel. While relaxing over breakfast we realized that a shuttle to Granada was leaving right from the front door at 9am and only cost $10 each. We realized at 8:55am. Thankfully we were already packed and ready to go, so off to Granada we went. On the shuttle we bumped into Brian and Dara, who were on their way to the airport. When we arrived in Granada we happily realized that the shuttle dropped us off only a few blocks away from our next Guesthouse, Hostal La Mexicana. The owner was super-friendly and though I wouldn't eat off the floor, this place was much nicer than our accommodations in León had been ... and there were two fans in the room that both worked :) Granada ... read more

It was a slow journey to Granada and I very nearly didn´t make it but good things come to those who wait! I had the typical Nicaraguan breakfast for a Sunday which is called Nacatamal made from corn and other fillings. After that the owner of the B&B gave me a tour by car of the city. In the afternoon I explored on my own and went to the Cathedral and then randomly met Laura and Georgia in the plaza. We´d all met in Santa Ana, El Salvador so it was nice to catch up over a late lunch. I wandered back to the plaza later and there was a band playing. People were dancing to cumbia and other latin music so of course I had to join in! We danced until it started raining and ... read more

Totesin että eivät he minua haittaa.

Kuvattavaa riitti. Sain nukuttua päiväunet.... read more

Rajalla meni 2 tuntia 20 minuuttia. Costa Rican puolella piti kävellä sorakentän läpi rakennukseen maksamaan 8 dollarin maasta poistumisen vero. Sitten pitkä jonotus varsinaiseen tulliin. Päästiin bussissa rajan yli. Meiltä kerättiin passit ja 14 euroa saapumisesta Nicaraguaan. Piti ottaa matkatavarat bussista ja kävellä tullin läpi. Matkatavarat läpivalaistiin. Sitten piti odottaa pääsyä bussiin. Odottaessa vaihdoin 40 dollaria. Euron kurssi oli huonompi. Matkalla näkyi iso Nicaragua-järvi ja Ometepen saaren tulivuoret. Mentiin Ernarosan kanssa samalla taksilla keskustaan. Oma hotellini oli kävelykadun päässä. Uusi hotelli vanhassa talossa. Kävin ensin järven rannalla. Sitten Cafe Garden... read more

Arriving in Granada was the best way to begin my trip. Dain Bassett and I met in Managua briefly, after he completed his travels in Peru and hiking the Inca Trail, and I completed my hospital stay in Portland, Oregon. One of the worst parts about being a sick person is all the logistics, and a lot of travel rearranging. The airlines were mostly cooperative refunding monies with a doctor's note, they didn't like it though. Sadly, I wasn't able to join my new husband and new in-laws on an epic hiking adventure with a personally arranged guide and once in a lifetime opportunity. My heart wasn't able to pump blood, my liver wasn't able to process enzymes, I couldn't walk, breathe, eat, drink, or sleep three weeks prior to the hike. The fevers continued, even ... read more

To quote the recently deceased Dutch football hero Johan Cruijff: 'elk nadeel heb z'n voordeel' (every disadvantage has its advantage). I'm not sure if not knowing that you lose all sense of time if you are traveling for such a long time should be considered an advantage or a disadvantage, but it wasn't until half way through the week that we realized it was Semana Santa. On Ometepe it wasn't that obvious, but the week before Easter is a really big thing for most catholics, especially in Latin America. Luckily we realized in time that on Good Friday it would be impossible to get any transportation off the island and further to Granada, so we decided to leave on Thursday and make sure we got to Granada before getting stuck in the middle of nowhere. The title of this blog is a homage to the blog entry I wrote about the time I visited Granada's Spanish namesake. It took me a while to finally get to Spain's Granada, but once there it perhaps surprisingly, became one of my favourite cities in Europe. Would Nicaragua's version have the same effect on me? Well, I didnt nearly have as much difficulty getting there than I did finally getting to Spain's version though I had to get up earlier than I would've liked. But overall the transfer from Isla de Ometepe was painless. The ferry we took to San Jorge was nice and big and rode the swell a bit better than url=../../Central-America-Caribbean/Nicaragua/Southern-Pacific-Coast/Isla-de-Ometepe/blog-926158.htmlthe small, creaking, wooden vessel we came over to the island on. And just as well, as it was super-windy and ... read more

Totally skipped the during-trip blogging. This is a post-blog, with a bare minimum of details. Arrived in Nicaragua with my sister about 2 weeks ago after a cancelled connection in Mexico City involving an unexpected day there. That day was spent waiting in lines or simply waiting at the airport trying to resolve how to make the trip from DF to Managua. After a day of waiting in lines and Aeromexico mix ups, we booked an Aeromexico flight the next day, and got a hotel room for the night along with a few meals, courtesy of Aeromexico. After a good night's sleep, we finally arrived in Managua 24 hours later than planned. From Managua International, we headed directly to our Airbnb stay in Granada. Granada is a small town, dominated primarily by tourists. It sits on ... read more
