Hey from the wilds of Nicaragua! I don’t remember when I wrote the last mass email was. Been a long time! I have been here in the Nica for over a year, having arrived in country last September. I swore in as a Peace Corps Volunteer just before Thanksgiving and was placed in the community of Moropoto, Madriz. At the end of next month I will be half done with my service! This year has been rough, not gonna lie. There have been moments when I’ve thought about throwing in the towel and returning to the States to fight for a job. But then I realized a few things. First, I have an extraordinary amount of pride, which keeps me from running when things get tough, and usually propels me until the end. Second, no one ... read more

Got my new camera! And Lenin and i have taken a lot of photos in the last few days... here is a selected photo essay.... Thursday 15 October 7:30am Argh. Okay, so I came into Managua to have a catscan of my lungs. Fine. The ISSUE has nothing to do with medical stuff though. The issue is that Lenin and I went to the bank and paid the fees. HE paid the total of $131 and the $12 fee for the 1-800 number to call and set up the interview appointment. MY job is to make the call and set up the appt. However. Tuesday I called and called this 1-800 number and got no answer. So I figured I'd be in Managua at the office the next day, I'd call there (here). Except yesterday everytime ... read more

Stuff that has happened... I turned 27. Lenin and I went to the bank yesterday and paid the nonrefundable fees to set up an interview at the American Embassy in Manangua, Nicaragua, so he can get a tourist visa and come to my country and meet my people for the Navidad. Annnnnd! After having my camera stolen at the beginning of August and suffering through 2 1/2 months without, one arriiiiiiived in the mail! From my lovely mother! THANK YOU, MOM! Also, an awesome birthday card from my titan, lbgraham, of the Red Stick. PS Los Ticos Nuevos, have a great flight! See you in a few months when you need to leave the Rica to renew your visas! And, well, that´s all she wrote. ... read more

4 October 2009 Sunday 6:47 pm Haven’t written in a while. The week of medical crap in Managua and the excess of down time and internet searching and emailing and chatting… kind of wore me out. Decided I was thinking too much and it would be better just to get back here and move on with my life instead of all the “what ifs” that were running through my mind. The upside of having to stay longer than I thought in Managua was that I was extremely glad to be back and to have Lenin hold me while I slowly broke down, as opposed to having been alone in a hotel room slowly breaking down. I know, what a great post. I sound like a hot mess and a half. In other news, the mosquitoes are ... read more

For those of you who are out of the loop (which means everyone but family), I have been reevaluating my service and wondering if it´s worth it to stay for the 2nd year. But then I thought, well, does it really matter if I go back to the States right now? Not really. There aren´t any jobs. And no one said the Peace Corps was gonna be easy. And if I stay I will have one more year to speak the ´Spañol every day and save money without student loans hanging over my head and I´ll get to help with the coffee harvest - which ACTUALLY interests me, and get married properly and maybe like build some stoves or something. So it is still a pro vs con thing in my head. But, tomorrow is my ... read more

Quick update. More seeds! Mail shoutout to Joy! Thank you! This Friday, Sept 4, marks my 1 YEAR MARK IN NICARAGUA! Yup, got here a year ago. Friday is also afrosh´s birthday :) Monday 5th my boss comes to visit me in my community. Tuesday, at like 3am, Lenin and I are heading to Wiwili, Jinotega, to visit his family. Which means I will have neither cell phone nor internet connection for over a week. I will be milking cows and making cheese and sitting next to Lenin as he tells his parents, face to face, that we actually are going to get married. Next July. Why am I nervous? Then the 15th is Nicaragua´s Independence Day. I don´t know if we will be back to Moropoto by then or not. So. PCV meeting Friday. Aglendinning´s ... read more

Okay. So I just saved directions for the visa stuff onto my memory so I can take it home and read it over again. Basically, we filled out the form. He has to fill out a supplemental form, also, that asks things like names of mothers and fathers and military service and last 3 jobs and my contact info and if he has specific travel arrangements made yet. Which he doesn´t. Because it is in bold print NOT TO BUY TICKETS until after the visa is procured. So. Questions answered. Fill out two forms. Go to Bancentro (no Bancentro in Somoto, which means we go to Esteli or Ocotal) and pay $131 - in córdobas - and get a pin number to call the USA for 8 minutes to set up the interview in Managua at ... read more

23 August 2009 Sunday 12:33 PM Garden update. Our neighbor’s turkeys flew up and ate most of the leaves of the green beans. They’re not looking so hot. We planted tomato seeds and peas where there were two empty spaces. There was one empty space from onion seeds that never sprouted. And the other was from the radishes. Some sort of worm came in and demolished the radishes in two days. So now we have peas sprouting where the radishes were. And tomato sprouts where the failed onion seeds were. We have also thinned out the chilies and moved part of them into where the chives were planted…that didn’t grow, either. Now, since a good part of the garden is made up of root vegetables like onions and beets and carrots and, once upon a time, ... read more

21 August 2009 Friday 7pm I would like to go home for Thanksgiving or Christmas. And I would like to take Lenin, too. But, before we buy tickets, we need to get him a tourist visa using the Nonimmigrant Visa Application. We have filled out the application. Now I just need to figure out the next step. Where do we send it? How do we pay? How do we get an interview set up? And when do we know if he gets it so that tickets can be bought. Thank god he has his passport already. One less step to take. In other news, he is impatiently waiting for the camera to arrive so that we can go to Wiwili and visit his family. I am well aware that it takes a few weeks for packages ... read more
