So, just to catch up on the last few days... Keith and I spoke to the woman at our guesthouse and told her what happened when we tried to buy bus tickets to Ocho Rios and she flipped out. Turns out she knows the guy who runs the bus company -- she called him immediately, and told him what happened. We were assured that we would get on the bus Saturday morning without any problems. We get up bright and early, get over to the bus place and get our tickets. The woman that checks us in and gives us our tickets is the one we saw about 12 hours earlier that told us there was no room on the bus. EEK! We take the bus and arrive in at the Ocho Rios Jerk Centre. A ... read more

When I decided to return to ships for another contract, I made some clear goals for myself. Experiences I wanted to have that I could accomplish during this time at sea. The biggest one was getting my dive certification. Done. I also wanted to go parasailing. Also done. With less than 2 weeks left on the ship, there was one more I had to do: go horseback riding in the ocean. I rode horses as a kid. Took lessons at a farm up the road. Would ride at different friends' houses. Did a 4-H horse club. Tried to convince my dad to get a horse (it didn't work). I loved riding. But I haven't been on a horse in years. There are various horseback riding tours offered in the different ports. For some reason, riding in ... read more

Yes to another adventure! Today a group of us ventured to a spot in Jamaica known as "The Blue Hole". I went along with Ema (who until the start of this week was my roomie), Thahn (Ema's boyfriend who works in the Casino), Craig (social host), Danny (fitness instructor who sadly leaves the end of this cruise) and Eddy (the DJ). The Blue Hole is a spot that apparently only crew members usually go to. We asked the locals there if they get many people come out and they said almost only crew. The six of us were the only people out there all day. It only made it all the more magical. So what exactly is The Blue Hole? It's part of the White River. It's a spot where there are a series of waterfalls ... read more

Before Mom & Lee came to cruise with me, we’d emailed a bunch of times about things they were interested in doing in the ports. I was surprised (pleased, but surprised) when they said what they really wanted to do was go zip-lining! Ocho Rios, Jamaica is the one port we’re visiting this week where that is an option, so today that’s what we did. We first had about a half hour bus ride along the coast. Our driver/guide was fantastic and the scenery was lovely. But I just could not stay awake! I love having family here with me, but I am drained. Whenever I’m not working, I’m visiting. And my work schedule just does not line up well with early and long port days. Plus, I’m doing a gym challenge this month with the ... read more

We were both very excited to go to Jamaica. We left the ship early and hopped on a bus out to the ‘Happy Retreat’ Plantation, where we had a tour around the plantation homestead (circa 1730-35) and learned about all the local plants, fruits and spices and how to prepare the famous Jamaican ‘Jerk’ foods. The owner of the homestead also gave us a brief history lesson on the Ocho Rios area and the homestead itself - we even got to try some local Jamaican rum punch - which was yummy! We saw some of the local farm animals too - including a colossal fat and hairy piggy named Herbert! The drive up to the plantation traveled through the incredible ‘Fern Gully’ - an area of incredibly dense rainforest, featuring over 500 types of fern - ... read more

Hello all OK so we're not exactly travelling through South East Asia this time but thought we'd drop you a few lines to say hello as the blog was welcomed before (and of course we can't be bothered to write any postcards while we're taking it easy!) So, we've been in Jamaica for a few days now and it's absolutely fab - just what we both hoped for...... rum, reggae and relax (they call it the 3 R's here). The weather is perfect, blazing hot sun everyday, with clear blue sea and long beaches. The hotel is fantastic, with a dozen or so bars and restaurants to choose from, an army of staff who seem to want to do anything to make you smile, and as much food and drink as you can possibly enjoy. ... read more

We stopped of in Jamaica today. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Rather bloody good because there was a huuuuge crew party last night with dodgy Engineer types from Indonesia cooking non descript meaqt for us. And, more importantly, there was beer. Lots of beer. beer beer beery beer. So fortunately I had the next day off until the afternoon. After dragging myself out of bed at 11 ( a blessed lie in as far as i was concerned) I decied to check out the origonal island in the sun for the short couple of hour I had before the boat left. We got ashore and after wh fought through the multitude of Rastas offering rides in their "taxis" we wandered along the caost. Ocha Rios is on the other side of Jamaica from the touristy bits - it takes about ... read more

Roni's World Tour 2007 "Respec' - 'dats what we say here, in Jamaica, maan!!!..." ...where do I begin!?!? Jamaica proved to be a WHIRLWIND of a four-day adventure, complete with lots of good food, dancing, adventuring (if that's a word), and OF COURSE, a beautiful wedding to cap it off!!!... ...but I guess the best place to begin is....well...the beginning!!! So Mona and I set out BUTT-ASS early on Friday morning, for a full-day's worth of traveling. We made it to JFK and endured one of the most BASS-ACKWARDS check-in / boarding sequences known to man!!! So here's how it goes... FIRST, you get in line (slash - don't get in line AT ALL, but rather push your way to an open check-in kiosk), check in and get your boarding passes.... NEXT, you get in ... read more
