Already we are in our final week in Jamaica. We really have enjoyed ourselves and it is a reminder that Negril is one of our favourite destinations!
We are certainly entertained everyday on the beach by the travelling entrepeneurs. I did a little experiement the other day. In a span of 30 minutes these are the products that came by for sale:
( fresh fruit, patties, cooked lobster, scarves, tours, beach balls, massages, aloha vera, popcorn, peanats, cotton candy, jewellery, fresh fruit juices, cigarettes, parasailing, baskets, baked goods, jerk pork, jet ski rides, art work)
What more could you ask for!!?? These vendors are not all pushy or annoying, just amusing, friendly and hard working.
As well the fresh fruit and veggie truck comes by the condo most days they also sell various kinds of bread and cakes. Its nice to have fresh lettuce and carrots to munch on. Periodically the farmers come down from the hills and set up a giant farmers' market.
On Wednesday we took a tour inland with Carlton to Black River and Y.S Falls. Black River is about an hour east of Negril. On the way it was interesting as we
drove through little communities and towns known as parishes. Many of them are named after places in Britain. Black River is about 45 miles long, flows into the Caribbean and is of historical importance in that it was the first means of transportation for sugar, molasses, rum etc. from the country to be shipped elsewhere. The area was also the first to have automobiles and electricity. We took a boat through the mangroves and saw interesting birds and the big attraction - "crocodiles"!! It was pretty exciting. The rivers and its surroundings were so beautiful, peaceful and calm as we sailed along.
For lunch we went to a couple of truly local places. The first one served only their special - peppered shrimp and pumpkin/carrot soup. You just stand in the backyard, peel your shrimp and drink your soup from a striaphome cup. It was delicious. The second place was unreal! There must have been at least 20 cast iron kettles over wood burning fires about 60 ft. long!! They offered about 10 different dishes varying from cow skin stew to cow foot soup! You could look in each pot and choose your favourite. We were rather conservative and
opted for the stewed chicken. Again stand room only around the pots. The amazing thing about these eating establishments is that they are open 24/7 and are always busy. Lunch was quite the experience.
Y.S. Falls was also a great excursion. Fed by natural springs and rain it tumbles down tiered rocks and stones making for a spectacular sight. We were pulled up by tractors to the first level and then walked to the top. On the way down I stopped for a quick swim and had a back massage from the tumbling water. It felt so good and was very resfreshing. My kind of fun!
A tradition in Negril is what they refer to as "Spring Break" when college students from the States invade in beach during their early March vacation. We've been here before and it's wild!! Sunseekers, drinkers and partiers line the beach and water like sardines. A few groups have arrived already but apparently the big influx will be this weekend just as we are leaving for Mexico. We fly to Miami on Sunday and then on to Cancun where we will spend a month on the island of Isla Mujeres and take a
side tour to Merida.
Hope this blog finds everyone happy and healthy. Take Care.
