Birthday Poster
made by 2 of my new 4th grade students! I thought that my birthday was going to be the same day as the first day of school but got a phone call from Sarah K. on Saturday that school was being postponed until Wednesday. The OAS (Organization of American States) is scheduled to send representatives into Honduras tomorrow (Tuesday) which also coincides with a 6 day march that has people from all over Honduras meeting in Tegus tomorrow. In order to be pro-active, the school decided to postpone the start of classes. Teacher still have to go in on these days but the school has been great about making sure our safety is in their best interest.
So anyways, today was my birthday but the weekend was fun too.
Friday after school I went out with the 2nd grade team of teachers and assistants to Ruby Tuesdays for happy hour - cheap beers and half-priced apps. I fell asleep quite early and then woke up early Saturday. Honduras makes me a morning person, as the sun goes down early and wakes up SUPER early in the morning. I'm not minding it actually.
Saturday morning I did a little bit of planning before Walt arrived. Once Walt got
Cake!
A beautiful cake made by the mother of one of my student's. here, I showed him around the school, and then we spent a whole lot of time looking through photos of my time on the cruise ship. Although things still felt slightly awkward at first, it was really nice to see him. I had missed him.
Saturday night Sarah K. (there are 2 Sarahs on the elementary staff) and her husband Jimy (Honduran) picked Walt and I up and took us out to play pool and then to dinner. It was so nice to be out with another bi-cultural couple who have experienced similar feelings. Walt and Jimy are both from Comayagua and actually went to the same high school. Walt was a year ahead of Jimy and they don't really know each other at all but had a lot to talk about. Apparently (it was in Spanish and Sarah and I had no idea it was happening) they were talking about relationships and Jimy was giving Walt advice on our situation. Sarah and I just enjoyed chitchatting.
Pool was a lot of fun. Walt had only played a few times before but he picked it up really quickly. He and I beat Jimy and Sarah at the first
game but they beat us the second round. We then played a game that was individual scores and Walt ended up with the highest score of the evening!
After pool we went for dinner at a Chinese food restaurant. We ordered a plate of rice and a plate of cashew chicken and just shared it between the 4 of us. It was delicious.
Sunday Walt and I spent quite a bit of time talking and then played cards as we waited for my laundry then battled the strong winds on the roof as we hung my clothes to dry - it only took about 15 minutes before they were dry!
Walt wanted to meet some of the other teachers so I called Kallie and Pam and the 4 of us went to one of the malls in Tegus that only Pam had been to (she'd lived here 4 years prior but worked for a different school). We did a bit of window shopping and then went to a cute Mexican restaurant where the 4 of us shared a huge family-sized meal of tortillas with all the fixings with 3 choices of meats, plus sauces and veggies. It
Las Tejitas
The lovely little restaurant where we went to celebrate my birthday :) was SO good and super cheap.
We then came back to the house to listen to music and play some cards, since we didn't have to teach the next morning! It was so nice to see Walter joking and laughing with my new friends. Pam told me he was a keeper and I agreed. It felt natural... finally.
This morning Walt left and I head over to school for 2 extra (and greatly appreciated!) days of planning before students arrive. I was surprised by the mother of a parent who dropped off a poster made by her daughter and a friend saying Happy B-Day in glitter. SO cute! I guess Rebeca (my co-teacher for 4th grade) had mentioned to some parents last week while they were there snooping around the school to see what classes their children were in. I was then SHOCKED when a parent and student arrived with a BEAUTIFUL cake that they had intended for me to share with all the students on the first day but that they thought I could share with the teachers instead. SO sweet. Apparently this mother owns the best bakery in the city. When I told teachers the cake was from "Pan y Mas" they all freaked out, saying how good the cake is from there. They were right. It was delicious.
Also in the morning I received a text message from Kallie, telling me to be "dressed pretty" and at her apartment at 4:30. Her and a bunch of other teachers took me out for dinner and drinks. There were 10 of us there. It was nice.
Between the nice visits on the weekend, the surprises at school, and the lovely e-mails and messages I've received today, I'd say it was a pretty good birthday 😊
