Haiti Missed first flight. Rerouted thru FLa. Sat next to great fam w really smart kid with anxiety problems. Dad said when a sports team loses he would worry about if a player was going to get fired and if they had family. Got on flight to port au prince- amazing shit show. People brought on TVs and trophies that wouldn't fit under their seats but they closed the cabin door. Had to finagle things in, took 30 min. Hilarious. Sat next to wonderful Haitian woman who left Haiti 43 yrs ago and moved to Montreal to become a cosmetologist. Now lives in Miami. Her husband wants to move back to Haiti. Said America is the land of opportunity but she was now too old and too tired to keep up. Wants to make room for ... read more

I have visited Mole (as it is referred to by the locals) seven times since March 2005. It is such a beautiful community with a rich historic past; a major watershed event being the establishing of the first new world base by Columbus in December 1492. The Spanish, French, and English all built forts surrounding the town, and most of the structures are still standing, which can be visited easily by foot. Mole's main industries are fishing, charcoal manufacture, charcoal export, and agriculture. On every visit I have observed sailing ship in the bay of mole anchored ready to receive or preparing to sail wood charcoal to the larger cities throughout Haiti. I've learned a few things about Haiti as I am currently living here. Haiti is the poorest country in the Western hemisphere, with 50% of the population under 20yrs of age, has the highest AIDS rate in the hemisphere, the lowest literacy rate, a population density of 350 km^-2, and the greatest corruption in government. I was only in Cap Haitian for an afternoon but I saw a dirty city, extending into the hills, with garbage ringing the coastline. Cap Haitian is the centre of the cholera outbreak and the riots. There are nearby river flats where rice and other crops grow. I was happy to leave, although there is some local history that is supposed to be amazing.
