Catching Up on the Rio Dulce

It’s time to catch up with life in the community on the Rio Dulce. Christmas was a pitch in success at the newly named Laguna Marina which is the old Texan Bay. The community came together for a feast of native turkeys, ham, and all the trimmings. It was a family affair with new friends and acquaintances sharing and giving life’s little gifts of friendship and kindness. Many thanks go out to Gary Smith the new owner and entrepreneur that has taken up the task of rebranding the Bay.

New Years Eve was a whole other adventure. The village of Cayo Quemado threw a New Year’s party that was better than Times Square New York. The village turned out with a friendly atmosphere where everyone was welcomed. The music was a mix of Latin and Hip Hop with every one dancing from 3 years and up. The party went on into the early morning and the fireworks lit up the sky. Shortly after, midnight we left and paid a visit to the Evangelical Church and were welcomed as long lost sheep. We were fed delicious duck tortillas with coffee and forgiveness after a night of drinking local beer. Everyone was kind and tolerant as we munched down this feast at long tables set up for the occasion. All in all, we ended up happy, fed and feeling wonderful as the New Year burst upon us with rain and a power outage. Nothing mattered because we were all prepared and everyone made it home safely.

As time has passed in peace upon the quiet river we took a sail upon the Gulfette and wandered our way down river and back. Later we took the launch down Tarzan’s Canyon to the old town of Livingston where the decedents of slaves roam the street listening to Bob Marley and Hip Hop beats. Life is relaxed and it is a great time to shop for necessities for the on the Rio Dulce.

So as my time draws nearer to an end in this adventurous paradise I encourage people of goodwill to visit and stay awhile at the Roundhouse or Laguna Bay to learn more about the characters and life on the Rio for this is truly the home of the ‘River Rats’.
