Panajachel is located at the north side of the Lake Atitlan. This lake, which is surended with mountains, is the most amazing and interesting place I have ever seen. Looking south ate the lake from Pana, at the right side is the San Pedro volcane and at the left the Atitlan and Santiago volcanes. Pana itself has many people that have migrated here from all around the world. Other villages around the lake have each different style and way of living. San Pedro is a popular place for hippies vs. Sant Marcus a place for spiritual people who sleep soon after sunset and wake up befor sunrise.... read more

We've had 3 nights by Lago de Atitlan, a huge lake formed thousands of years ago in a crater left by a collapsing volcano. We've been to a nature reserve with spider monkeys, coffee plantation, banana trees and a butterfly farm, but we only spotted 5 butterflies! Met a lovely belgium girl who we have been travelling with. We swam in the lake in our underwear as we forgot our swimsuits! lovely clear water. Yesterday we spent on the lake visiting 3 villages by boat and enjoying the sunshine. Today we went to a HUGE market in Chichicastenango, about an hour away, which was lots of fun. Couldn't buy too much as our bags are already pretty full but Penny had her boots shined! We also went on a visit to some hot springs near Quatzaltenango ... read more

Vlindertuin viel echt tegen! Er zaten ... read more

A Proper Pana Visit We started digging a hole today. It is really big. It has to be 3 ½ feet deep. This should be every little kids’ dream job. Good thing that kids don’t ever actually go through with their dreams, because then their lives would suck. Digging is horrible; we use a pickaxe and try to cut through the concrete, then the rock, then the roots and finally the clay. I did go down to Pana for the second half of the day with Kensie (a girl who is down here from Idaho who was adopted from this orphanage) and Estela (a girl who works here). It was good just to be able to talk to someone, albeit in Spanish, not my native tongue. We saw the entire city. I mean the ENTIRE ... read more

In Pana...and All Alone Today we only worked for a half-day so I caught a ride with Don Chema into Pana so that I could see more of the town. I went up and down calle Santander once, ate at a nice Italian restaurant (Bistro, $6 meals!), and got on the Internet at an Internet café ($1 per hour). After that I left because it was not too fun going there all by myself.... read more

Construction and a visit to Panajachel Second day of construction in a row and I am ready to get my college degree. I had boiled plantains for breakfast and that did not sit well on my already upset stomach but I ate them and thanked Dona Luce. We used up all of the dirt in a pile by the wall so now we are moving it from other piles in wheelbarrows…Exciting stuff, but I am getting some exercise. I went into Panajachel with Larry and ate lunch and went to his friend’s coffee shop. That was a lot of fun. Pana looks like just a tourist town, and it mostly is, but there are definitely some nice little shops and restaurants that make up for all of the hustle of a major tourist trap.... read more

I got sick. After spending Christmas back in Antigua, I decided to head to Lago de Atitlan to spend my last days in Guatemala exploring the lake. I met a couple of girls on the bus and we decided to share a room in Panajachel, wake up early, and visit the Thursday market in Chichicastenango. We went out to dinner and went to bed early. I woke up around 3:30 am and my insides felt like they were being put through a wringer. I had terrible stomach cramps, nausea, cold sweats, muscle ache, and fever. I spent the next 20 hours or so in the fetal position. I ate a total of one bowl of soup and 3 pieces of watermelon over the next 3 days (still haven’t gotten my appetite back). Needless to say my ... read more

Today Lucy and I took ourselves on a tour of the lake, stopping in at three different villages. The first, San Pedro, we loved. It's nestled at the foot of Volcan San Pedro, with steep cobbled streets. We only had one hour there, but the first place we stumbled across was a coffee shop, which was complete heaven. Although there is lots of coffee grown here, most of the good stuff is exported, and after one sip I took to the tea. Lucy is still drinking it, but describes it as "hot and wet" rather than coffee. This place however was really great, easily amongst the best coffee I've ever had, with a friendly local manning the shop. So that took up quite a bit of time, but it was a happy half hour! It's a ... read more

We travelled to Panajachel yesterday, this time by tourist shuttle, which was luxurious in comparison to the chicken buses. I was incredibly happy that I wasn´t careening down the perilously steep and narrow road in the chicken bus! It dropped us at the door of our hotel, Hotel Atitlan, which is simply gorgeous. It is supposedly Guatemala´s best, and it really is fabulous. We have hand-carved furniture in our room, local art, wrought iron beds and handcrafted patchwork eiderdowns. We had booked this so long ago as a Christmas treat, but it has been worth it. It is a colonial, rambling building nestled under the mountains and set amongst the most beautiful garden. They charge non-guests to come in and view it even. All rooms are lake facing, although the room Lucy and I are in ... read more

Just as I digested the short ride (), the next chicken bus was kicked up multiple notches. This ride took us from Guatemala city to Panajachel. A smooth ride should take ~3hrs. Just to put things in perspective, I come from Japan who's got their train running on time down to the minutes. +/- 5min that I've been accustomed to in the US is pretty lax for me. The bus left Guatemala City ~9:30pm. The bus was decently full. In the next hour or so, the bus was making its way out of the city, adding more passengers than it could hold. Driver and his helper was in perfect sync. Loading system is the same as in the city. The helper yells destinations for potential customers and help the driver maneuver through busy streets. Being the ... read more
