Yaxha Park today – (sounds like, ja shou). As many of you know, Clay studied the Maya in his undergraduate. He saw for the first time, today, Mayan ruins which have been unearthed. What a wonderful and fulfilling thing. Even I (Ann) have to admit that although ruins are not my thing, they are pretty cool. But let us start where all good stories must, at the beginning. This morning, we were to be picked up at our hotel at 8:30 a.m. so we made sure to get up and have breakfast and be at the appointed pick location. That location was actually way down a hill from the hotel and on the shore of a very stunningly beautiful lake. (See photos) At about 9:30, we determined that 8:30 was just a suggestion. (Remember, we are ... read more

Sorry we are a little behind... internet connections are taken for granted in the United States. Boy do we miss our 50mbps download speed!!! We will trying and make up the days today or tomorrow! We had a nice leisurely breakfast at the Casa Durante. It was a sort of black bean soup with tortillas and chicken in it. (Sounds like a great breakfast, no?) We were supposed to be picked up at 10a.m., but as usual, it was about 20 minutes later. (However, that is still relatively early for Guatemalan time.) There were other travelers on the bus already but we stopped to pick up more. In the end, there was a Spanish Couple, an Asian couple, new friends Pankaj and Laura, and two girls from Britain. Our first stop was a McDonald’s where the ... read more

Flores, Guatemala Second border crossing under our belts we arrived in the small lake town of Flores. A small island on a huge lake in northern Guatemala. Every backpackers nightmare, our reservation at Los Amigos didn't exist! Thankfully they squeezed us in, and I mean squeezed, three beds between five people for the first night in a sweltering hot room with no working fans.. Met two lovely Guatemalan girls who had had the same trouble and ended up all going for dinner together. They were both from Guatemala city, really lovely and spoke great english thank god! After no sleep that night we were ins bus to Tikal at 4am the next morning. Tikal is north of Flores and is a huge site of Mayan ruins In the jungle, I think the most impressive of the ... read more

Hello friends and family, This blog details our adventures through Guatamala. If you get the chance to visit this country then we highly recomend it! Guatamala is ALL TIME, probably one of the sickest countries that we have been to. Nicaragua left a great taste in our mouths and it was sad to leave her behind but there were many more adventures waiting for us in Guatamala. We decided to skip Honduras and El Salvador but the bus companies do not travel at night (due to armed hold ups) so we spent an interesting night in Honduras and then finally ended up in Guatamala city. Tired, cramped and sweaty, we piled fifteen people into a nine seater shuttle bus and made the one hour trip up to the mountain-volcano town of Antigua. Antigua sits at the ... read more

Flores and Semuc Champey Flores in El Peten is an island on the lake named Lago de Peten Itza which is accessed by a causeway from the adjacent much busier town of Santa Elena. The island is characterised by backpacker hostels, hotels, bars and restaurants punctuated by the occasional tourist agencies which bound the cobbled streets. On arrival we sought to spend the night in Los Amigos, a laid back yet party orientated hostel which is extremely popular with many backpackers. Unfortunately our late arrival meant we couldn’t stay there as they were fully booked. We therefore shuffled down the street to hotel Mirador Del Lago which offered rooms with an amazing view of the adjacent lake. This lake is so warm that despite my shortcomings as a swimmer I took the plunge. This was a ... read more

Samuc Champey! This town well exceeded my expectations. It was a bit difficult to get to, specially driving there at night in a middle of a storm, so instead I spent the first night in Lanquin which is about 10km away. I took the first shuttle in the morning to Samuc Champey and stayed at a place called El Portal Hostel. This place was literally in the middle of nowhere, in order to get there I had to ride in the back of a pickup truck for about 45minutes through dense jungle and mountain trails on a dirt road. Once there, I signed up for the Samuc Champey tour which consisted of a decent hike to get a panoramic view of the 16 famous turquoise pools, then hiking back down and swimming in them, followed by ... read more

Litt spenning i hverdagen. Flores er en vakker øy/by hvor alt er frodig og små fargerike hus tett i tett. Vi fløy over øya før vi landet - så da fikk vi ful oversikt. Temperaturen her er varm og det er høy luftfuktighet. I morgen skal vi ... read more

The Peten Inza lake looks like the caribbean sea from the air. I was a little confused when I saw the clear and turquoise water. La isla of Flores is a wonderful place to stay when exploring the ruins of Tikal. There isn't much to do but take in the lake, have some atoles (drinks like horchata and tamarindo) and tostadas and maybe go for a Tuk-Tuk ride but the ambiance gives you a nice taste of the Guatemalan countryside. We were lucky enough to find a festival on the river with music, piñata’s and lots of local food including empanadas made with Xiquinche, mushrooms that only grow after a big rain this time of year. Some would advise against eating street food but as long as what you’re eating is cooked I say it's a ... read more

This morning, we decided to eat breakfast out instead of the usual granola bars. I had delicious papaya, pineapple, and banana served over yogurt and granola. The local fruits are amazing. While we ate, big lizzards ran by and baby chickens roamed. Everywhere you eat here has the most amazing view. In the afternoon, we met up with my sister's friends from school and went exploring the top of the town and swimming at the dock. We followed one of the many side streets up to a wonderful discovery. At the top, was a tiny little town- a local church, school, and park. One of Jessie's friends, Luisa, told us that every municipalidad is requried to have a park/plaza that they maintain. I love that idea and would love to see it adopted in the United ... read more

We woke up early this morning to go to Tikal, some of the largest Mayan ruins in the world. Tikal did not disappoint; it was amazing. I felt dwarfed next to the grandness of the temples. Standing there, you could just imagine life back when the Mayan empire thrived. We saw ritual sites as well as old rock carvings. There were also monkeys swinging around, and we are pretty sure we heard jaguars! However, the most incredible site was the view from Temple IV. That is one of the three temples visitors rae allowed to climb, and the view is unbeatable. On a side note, when we were up on top of Temple IV, a little girl, probably 4 years old, said to her family with her hands of her hips, "?Quien quiere hacer canopy?" (Who ... read more
