Whilst in Antigua for a breif visit this weekend, we were told that Volcan de Pacaya (45 minutes drive from Antigua), had erupted in April and that you could still see lava!

We talked to our hotelier Saturday night at 22:30 and managed to wangle a bus ride and entrance to the ecological park where the volcano was.

5:15 Sunday morning we were up eating breakfast and then on our way with a bus full of other gringos to the volcano. We walked 5Km up, to about half way up. It was too dangerous to go any further. While we were walking you could here the explosive grumble of the volcanoe's intestines. We managed to get to where the lava was and then headed back down.

At this point you could hear tremendous rumbling from the volcan. Our guide told up that one of the peaks on top was new and that they were expecting another eruption very soon!

Volcano?
Freaking awesome, perhaps the most bad ass story i have ever heard... You were chilling (perhaps inappropriate verb?) on a volcano? Freaking awesome.

Did the primarks survive?
Hi Megs. I´m such a twat. Just found your email and loads of others from friends because I wasn´t checking back on Webmail. Just assumed that the opening page was the sum of my emails. Your photos are so evocative of the place. What a sight! But I´m a bit worried about your feet. Will the skin grow back? Will send you a decent email this week. Finally getting a routine going. I´m fine, but exhausted and missing everyone like crazy. Fins xxx

What are you going to do next?
Keep up the good work in the puestos, and learning the local dialect, will let Janet see all your journals so far. All our love
