Grenada and Grenadines, 4th to 11th August 2007.
So Leslie and Tiffany are happily with Mum for 3 weeks, and I'm off to the other side of earth
for some diving and golfing.
How do you get from Saigon to Grenada...by plane and with some patience...
I first arrived in San Francisco. Quite fresh, thanks a lot one more time for Cathay and the
upgrade on the 2 flights, Saigon-HK and Hong Kong-San Francisco...cannot praise Cathay enough!
Had a great late lunch at Swan Oyster Depot...you know, the place were I had lunch 6 weeks ago
with Leslie...and if you wonder, you queue, even at 4pm! Had a great time and off the same evening
to San Juan, Puerto Rico, going there through LAX.
The plan was to play golf during a long lay-over in San Juan. Well, my golf bag ended-up going by
Chicago...and me going for a nice lunch in Old San Juan. Took the local bus, really had fun as it
was full of people with a great smile.
To read more about Puerto Rico, you'll need to wait few days and my next entry.
So in the evening, flight on
American Eagle to Grenada, and straight to the boat were I get around
10pm.
Here are few stats. The Wind Dancer is operated by Peter Hughes diving company. They are the top
of the range in diving liveaboard. The boat can take 18 divers, and goes for a week from Grenada.
So our itinary is spread bewteen Grenada, and St Vincent & Grenadines...so this make few more
entries to my list of visited countries. We stopped also at Carriacou, Bequia and Tobago Keys.
Next time you go to the Carribeans, remember about luggages, they get lost....My golf bag made it with
me to Grenada....not that useful as I wasn't going to play golf for a week.
We were 8 divers, so less than 50% load, great to enjoy the boat properly, as well as a single
cabin without extra-charge. Out of 8 peoples 3 ended-up without luggages...one get them 48 hours
later, one the last day...and one...well...on the way to the airport, to go back home. So if you
go diving in the region, pack light, and bring some serious carry-on with you...don't tell me I
didn't warn you.
So 8 divers: one south african
couple from South Africa living in London, a Mum and her son from
Atlanta, and four singles, 3 americans and myself. So we all enjoyed the fact that the boat had
extra space for us.
The group was like a reading of world diving. I think the average number of dive was well over
500 per diver...and I'm only at 120 after the trip! Most of the divers were going from one
liveabord to another one. Seems none of us would do shore dives anymore...well, for me shore
dives will be in 6 weeks in the Maldives.
Did 20 dives the first 5 days, and a last morning dive the last day. As you will see, I'm still
not equiped with proper underwater camera...it will come...
Great corals, and the landscape of most dive were gorgeous. You don't see much of the big stuff,
but I knew about it. So we saw...many many things...but specially....magnificient urchins. This
is a rarity as normally, they are well below 100 meters...and divers don't go that deep.
But also, seahorse, frog fish, hundreds of eels, all kind of shrimps and lobsters,...
For the bigger stuff, you've got the nurse
sharks in Tobago Keys, and all the different rays around
Grenada and Carriacou.
We also did 2 nights dives, my best ever! Lobsters, lobsters...you see them also everywhere at
day dives, but also all sort of shrimps, squids, eels hunting,...The second night-dive was gorgeous.
Dave had all his filming gears, and we just dove being him will all the show was going one with
massive lightings, quite impressive.
So I can sincerely recommend Peter Hughes liveaboard. The food was not the most impressive as it
cater mainly to americans(don't take me wrong, it was good food, just nt great food), but everything
else was really professional.
I'm glad I've got my spot with them in February in Galapagos...as of today, there is only
three dive-liveaboard operating in Galapagos with all the permits...so it will get crowded very
fast. Cannot wait my great trip in February....be ready, it's going to be truly amazing!
So for next entry, just wait few days.
