I went to El Salvador but I didnt find the peace that I was so desperately looking for. I couldnt get money out at the ATM and I didnt want to go to San Salvador, just for that, equally spooked by the stories of other travellers telling me, that they couldnt get any. Not good news either. The beach was an expensive shanty town, the hostel located next to a mangrove that would also be described as a stinky mosquito infested estuary. The host family was very nice though, we practiced our english and spanish, watching coloumbian soap operas which mainly resemble soft porn. Rented a board and went sunrise surfing. It was windstill, glassy and clean as you would expect what I didnt want to see were the 50 other surfers that also got up, ... read more

To get to El Salvadore we had to pass through Honduras. Meaning two boarder crossings in one day, so we were execting it to not go too smoothley. Leaving Nicaragua we took a faw busses and got on a minumbus (rammed) to the Honduras boarder. Approaching the boarder we begin to slow down. What we didnt realise is on the pacific side of honduras, travelers tend to drive directly through to El Salvador. Meaning they have only the short boarder crossing time to drain you of all your money. So slowing down at the boarder their eyes lit up as they made eye contact with you. Anyone who was standing in the street is now running along side the bus. Before long they are clambering onto the roof and untieing our bags and surfboards. the bus ... read more

101 Things to Buy on a Chicken Bus in Central America OK. This list was inspired by a journey on a chicken bus out of Santa Ana in El Salvador. Up until that point we had been fairly impressed by the range of things being sold by sellers coming onto the buses. But in Santa Ana the bus station is in the middle of the market and as the buses work their way through the market at less than walking speed a continual stream of sellers goes from bus to bus with quite a range of stuff on offer. Our attempts to remember 101 different items has only reached 90 so far {with no cuddly toys or chickens yet} but I hope people will comment and add to the list and that it will soon get ... read more

Juayua Thursday 26th August Juayua is a small town in the coffee growing area in the hills of Northern El Salvador. It's a single bus ride from Santa Ana that shouldn't take too long. But, as is becoming the pattern for this trip, we have transport problems as the pick-up taking us the short distance from our hotel to the bus station gets stuck on top of a speed hump! The longest part of the bus ride from Santa Ana to Juayua is actually the start of the journey as the bus tries to negotiate its way through the obstacle course that is Santa Ana market while belching thick black diesel fumes over any fresh produce for sale and we are raided by boarding parties of market traders. I've previously described the joys of shopping on ... read more

Santa Ana Trying Not To Look Like A Gangster The journey from El Tunco to Santa Ana is not a particularly long one but it does take three separate buses to get to Santa Ana. There are no great dramas or break downs and we reach Santa Ana on time. On the journey we have the usual flow of sales people through the buses including someone selling worm tablets again - selling worm tablets seems to be good business in Central America. We are even treated to an in-flight movie on the last bus. And just when you think a posse of enterprising popcorn sellers will flood onto the bus we are left alone. I am approached by a man with a stick at one bus stop. It's a very small stick and he's not being ... read more

Hammock Time Surfer Dudes Hang Loose in El Tunco El Tunco {Which means "The Pig"} is a small village on the Pacific Coast of El Salvador. It takes us less than an hour to get here by bus from San Salvador and as we arrive on a Sunday the village is at it’s busiest with lots of Salvadorians making the day trip. There's very little to El Tunco, about two streets and a beach - this is definitely a place for chilling out. And it's not a beach for sunbathers. For one thing it’s cloudy and raining when we arrive, and for another this is not a sandy beach. For some reason the pebbled beach reminds me of childhood visits to Rhyl. This is a beach for surfers. All the other guests staying at our hotel ... read more

I couldn’t wait until 3:05. Because at 3:05 my journey began. We started off driving to my grandma’s, but when we stopped we couldn’t get the car started. We got to my grandma’s really late so we went to bed. The next day we got up really early. My grandpa had to drive us to the airport because if we drove to the airport we would have to leave our car there. When we got on the plane my mom gave us gum so our ears would pop. For the first hour I read my book. Then Aspen and I played a bunch of card games. When we got to Mexico it was so hot it made my eyes water. The next three days we were in Paradise Village and we did the same thing. ... read more

Still slow internet service in Playa El Tunco. Today we learned the internet has been out for 3 weeks, as the main cable is stolen almost as quickly as it is replaced. Wireless cards are available but are extremely slow and inefficient. The black sand beach is rocky but beautiful and is great for surfing. Ryan and Brad continue to refine their skills, Maddy bravely learning the basics, and I am just trying to keep the saltwater and sunscreen out of my eyes. Ryan is having fun surfing but they are the strongest currents he has ever been in..."sometimes I work for five minutes, not to move at all." Tunco Lodge is a great place to stay - close to the beach and all the restaurants. By day there are a couple of cats, some chickens, ... read more
