Buenas! After an early morning run on the black sand beach, a freshly brewed coffee and a breakfast of granola and yogurt, we opted to drink fruit smoothies and eat fresh coconuts whilst basking in the tropical sun with the awesome Pacific hammering the shoreline in front of us. The playa at El Tunco was not a bad spot for a bit of beach-bumming. Just for the record, Dave did the running....and did he run! We were traveling with a nice Aussie guy (also called Dave) who was in El Tunco with us. When Dave invited the other Dave out for a run, little did Dave know that Dave was a former military exercise trainer. He had Dave doing pushups, sit-ups and drills of sprinting, all at 6 in the morning! Dave was walking a bit ... read more

Today, after two and half great weeks, we finally left Guatemala for El Salvador. I'm currently sitting in my hostel in El Tunco on the Pacific coast, the first time I've seen the ocean since Tulum in Mexico. Due to its notorious reputation and some previous advice, I hadn’t planned to go anywhere near El Salvador but travellers I’ve met out here said it couldn’t be missed. In my first day on the coast I've been greeted by a stunning sunset, friendly locals (who sang British songs to me in a restaurant and invited me to a local festival) and a huge meal for just four dollars - so far so good. This time last week we (I'm still travelling with Amber and Rob) visited the Guatemalan mountain town of Chichicastenango. Every Sunday they hold a ... read more

I had managed to book a shuttle from Antigua to Playa El Tunco in El Salvador, this was the furthest away from my final destination I would be which means that from now on I would be headed back in a roundabout route to Cancun. In the shuttle was a Canadian (there are lots of them here) 3 Dutch guys and 3 Brits so we all had a good laugh on the journey. The journey took 6 hours across sometimes potholed roads and dirt tracks. The border was a bit crazy with huge tailbacks and the queue for immigration took 45 mins to get through and after all that they don’t even stamp the passport! But at least they don’t charge you to cross the border. Fellow travellers have always said that the people from El ... read more

Getting up at ridiculous hours for tours or buses has pretty much been the norm for us now for the past 6-7 weeks, and we therefore felt a well-earned break was on the cards for all our ‘hard work’. In particular, this seemed to come to light one evening during dinner, when after a gentle yawn I said to Donna that I was knackered and that it was probably time to ‘hit the hay’ after dinner, to which Donna responded, ‘Mike it’s 7:30pm!’. The days of staying up till silly O’clock at home seem a long way away at the moment, as we appear to be evolving and morphing into what we once feared….morning people! Hopefully, this is just a phase though, and we will continue to try work through it. So, a break from buses ... read more

After that epic Journey we arrived again on the pacific coast at Playa El Zonte. When the chicken bus dropped us off on the road there was an old women selling fruit and a dirt track. El Salvador's answer to the Costa del sol. The place we stayed was Asencia Nativa which was a really chilled place with a pool and some really cool people. I was the only one that went surfing because Ellie was ill. Surfing was great fun and I definately want to to some more even though it involved falling over alot. ... read more

'El Salvador seemed to be lacking in any redeeming features really but you may want to check it out if there’s stuff there that floats your boat. San Salvador, the capital where we had one night on a stop over, is lawless as f***. Expect to see security guards armed to the teeth, think Arnie in Commando style, very disconcerting.' C. Warren 2011 It was all a whirlwind of decision making. Having given up school, I kicked around in San Pedro de Laguna for a while which is easy to do because it is a party town. My friend, a Belguian named Jurgen, described his time at San Pedro as being 'lazy by day, hazy by night' which sums it up perfectly. I had a tricky period where I became addicted to heroine but luckily it ... read more

I had been told that there were buses leaving Copán to take me towards the Salvadorian border at 6.00, 6.45 and 7.00am and everyone seemed to think these were the only ones until 2pm. So it was another early start for me. The 6am was out of the question, but I managed to get to the bus stop for 6.45 and hopped on a colectivo. The journey was taking me to Santa Rosa de Copán, a couple of hours away and where I'd have to change to get another bus to the border. The journey was uneventful and when I arrived in Santa Rosa at 9.45 (yes, that's 3 hours, not 2) I was pointed to a car park and told to wait for the 10am to Nueva Ocotepeque, the nearest town to the border crossing ... read more

I couldn't decide whether to do 3 blogs for this or not, so I think I'll go for 1 blog with 3 parts... After a few nights in Santa Ana, it was time to hit the Pacific beaches, mainly reputed for their surfing (not something I would be partaking in). Even though I hadn't exactly pre-planned the itinerary on that stretch, I ended up staying for 3 nights in 3 different places (hence the 3 parts blog): Los Cobanos, El Tunco and La Libertad. Los Cobanos: Although it had a brief mention in my guidebook, I hadn't really thought of going there until I asked the owner of my Santa Ana hostel and he said this was the place to be and also recommended a place to stay. So I left Santa Ana on Sunday morning, ... read more
