29.4.2012 As planned up 4.30 to catch flight from San Juan to Panama City with Copa Airlines, was a smallish plane but all good arrived Panama City 8.20a.m. for 11.52a.m. flight to Havana (3.1/2 layover). When checking our bags through in Panama City the check in girl put a standby sticker on our luggage, John questioned this and she said you have to go to the gate to get seating allocation. Our 5 STAR experience was just about to crash to about a 2, were told at gate plane fully booked and unless they could get volunteers to take another flight we would have to catch a much later flight, we did not leave that counter until that flight boarded, NO GO for us, you can imagine John, blood pressure sky high and the COPA Airlines ... read more

There are two biggest challenges that really make me get out of my comfort zone: buying and riding. It involves taking to local strangers to get places and to eat. On my second day of living in Havana, I took a public transportation and bought a loaf of bread in a National Cuban Bakery! ATACA!!!! PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION It’s the most challenging system in Central and Latin America. There are rarely schedules or exact routes. YOU JUST HAVE TO ASK. In Cuba, the buses are overloaded with crowds and you have to ask where they go. The best way is to take one of those old Chevrolets for 10 pesos. I just love it! When I climb one of those I feel like back in the days when we had old cars. I am not sure how ... read more

As I’m publishing this once I leave Cuba I’m telling the story as it happened day by day. Pretend each day is a new post. I also had the great idea of writing a day by day account on Wednesday so apologies for the not so informative accounts of Monday and Tuesday. Monday: So I somehow got up on time, got a taxi to the bus station that goes to Panama and bought a ticket for when I get back then managed to find the terminal for public bus to the airport and made my flight with plenty of time to spare. Flight to Havana was great. Had 3 seats to myself and just lay there watching stuff on my laptop. Minus the few episodes of turbulence was all good. My fear of flying is slowly ... read more

Hello, Sorry for the delay and this being brief ... Cuba was a very interesting country to visit. I was with a fantastic group of people and made friends from Oz and NZ who I hope to keep in touch with. We started in Havana, and headed East as far as Baracoa. The history was evident everywhere and we were able to visit many historical sites from the revolution. It was interesting to be in a communist country. There was no advertising other than government propaganda. No McDonalds and no Starbucks! The supermarket shelves were fairly empty and there was not much available to purchase. Internet was scarce and slow and it was actually quite expensive to be there as a tourist. They have two currencies and the Peso that the locals use allows their minute ... read more

It really is quite nice. Anyhow, today was our first day on our own so to speak after our “orientation” tour of Old Havana with our guide Anna Lise yesterday. Before we ventured out on our own though we had another orientation to attend with the tour operator. Basically it was an hour to tell us our transfer to the airport in Veraderro was 5 hours before the scheduled departure of the return flight on Monday. So that means our return trip will begin at 2:30A... read more

Wow - Cuba - what a country, what an experience! I have had such a fantastic time over the last week or so I don't know where to start...so why not at the beginning. Ater a routine flight from Mexico DF, Lucy and I arrived in not just a different country but what felt like a different age. Within seconds of being on the road we saw the old cars that Cuba is famous for, along with the revolutionary signs "Viva la Revolucion!" and pictures of Che Guevara. We were whisked in a Lada taxi to our hotel, on the edge of the Parque Central, the Hotel Plaza, arriving in an old hotel with a beautiful pink art deco style lobby. The rooms didn't quite match up, but no matter, we were already bewitched! First up ... read more

My second time in this Caribbean island! What can I say, sometimes I love it here and sometimes I feel so frustrated that I can’t wait to leave. But I keep coming back – can’t explain. Since my last visit here (last year March), things seem to have changed or maybe I just didn’t pay attention before. Seem that that are (1) more new car models on the streets; (2) more begging; (3) folks are more vocal about their dissatisfaction with the government; (4) Cuban men are way too sexual and direct. Don’t get me wrong, there are still lots of veryyyy old car model around, but more new car model as well especially Kia and Volkswagen are on the road. More begging in that once they know you are a tourist, they ask if you ... read more

I am the most daunted that I can remember by writing a travel blog about my parents’ and my week in Cuba. The decision to go came about five months ago, and when I think of why we decided to go, for me it was mostly curiosity about the people, a keen interest to see the dancing and hear the music, and wanting an adventure. My knowledge of Cuba when we signed up to go was limited strictly to the following: Cuba is communist, they have a dictator named Fidel Castro, who is sick, and his brother Raul is now in power, we have an embargo against them- the details on that topic were fuzzy, we had an embarrassing failed attack on them at the Bay of Pigs, then there was that missile crisis business, but ... read more

12.10. Istun Air Europan B767-300 takarivin keskipaikalla matkalla Madridista Havannaan. No gracias....Koneen inflight-lehden etusivulla on vihaisen näköinen nainen(toimari), joka kehuu tämän yhtiön palvelua huipuksi. No se ilo kesti noin 2m... read more
