There are so many wonderful things to share with you about Cuba. The revolutions, life in everyday Cuba and the reminders of the Soviet Union all make up what is the Cuba of today. This island nation of some 11 million people has taken a unique path to arrive where there are today, yet they still hold many traditions that make them very special and unlike any other nation. Retracing the path of Hemmingway When you come to Havana you will find many photos of Ernest Hemmingway hanging in bars, restaurants and hotels. He is famous for his love of this city and this country. He spent many years living in Havana, enjoying the good life, the music, the people, drinking and he even found a bit of time to do some writing. When in this ... read more

What’s new in Havana? Not much actually. Imagine taking a trip back in time….where the time on a clock actually is not a major factor, but living life to its fullest takes on an importance all its own. You look at the buildings and the vehicles on the streets and come to the conclusion that time has almost stood still…and for the most part it has. Welcome to Havana, Cuba. When you get off the plane in Havana you look at the clock and it says 1960, time seems unimportant. A bit of history In the late 1950’s, Fidel Castro and his band of socialists took control of this island in the Caribbean supposedly in an effort to thwart the Batista regime, which was in the throes of major corruption. Havana was being infiltrated by the ... read more

Hi Everybody! Walt and I have just returned from a fascinating trip to Cuba. We have wanted to go to Cuba for years but didn't want to chance a heavy fine. We recently heard that 10 U.S. travel companies had been granted special licenses by both U.S. and Cuba to conduct People to People Programs. The travel company takes care of the Visa, authorization letter, and specific license that is required. The program is rather strict and demands that participants follow a full educational exchange curriculum. The trip is not meant to be a vacation or leisure trip. It included very little free time --only a few hours in the evenings. We learned a lot about the history of Cuba, the Revolution, life in Cuba under Castro, changes that have taken place in the last few ... read more

The taxi dropped us off in downtown Havana at the square near the Plaza de la Revolución where all the buses pass by (so you can go anywhere in Havana from that square). For the first night in Havana, we went to a part of town near the Plaza (toward Chinatown) where there were many casas particulares and stayed at this really small one. It was pretty dingy for $25 per night. The owner also offered to make us dinner at a reasonable cost. It wasn’t great but much more edible than any food we found outside. Internet was only available at major hotels downtown but connection was slow everywhere. The next day when we met up with a couchsurfer, he recommended a casa particular that belonged to the mother of a friend of his. We ... read more

Ella subió al avión en la mañana, después de 9 horas aterrizó en La Habana... no quiero ir en su carro a Varadero... As the alarm went off at ridiculous o’clock, I jolted awake. My unbelievable excitement at the size of the bed in the Radisson Hotel did not even come close to the level of excitement I felt about my impending trip to Cuba. As the plane touched down, and the cabin crew sprayed bug repellent up my nose and in my eyes, I couldn’t have been happier. It was about to begin! Varadero, 3 days, sun, beach and birthdays, the stakes were high... and let me tell you, when Fidel says the best beaches in Cuba are here, I am not one to argue. Varadero is a town in the north west of Cuba, ... read more

1.5.2012 Met up with other crew last night, we are 3 aussies and 3 New Zealanders, all 45 plus, nice bunch. Then had dinner together at a gorgeous restaurant we found on HGT prices fantastic – 2 mains, 2 starters, 2 Mojitas, 2 coffees $26. Today was May Day here as well hundreds of thousands of people marched on Revolution Square, very interesting, took us 1.1/2 hrs to walk to the square just to see the end of it. No tours today as our tour guide JJ was day off because of May day, most things closed but a lot opened after 12.00. We have walked for hours in this city and it has such a good feel about it. 2.5.2012 Walking tour in the morning with JJ, to the old Havana, many buildings are condemned ... read more
