9/01/06 Day 1 in Costa Rica Hacienda Guachipelin (the Ranch) 05:50 I am wide awke, sun is up, so time for a hike...the shortest destination, the Red Pool, @ 30 mins thru the forrest on a muddy trail. *** Got there to find a great swimming hole but decided being naked at 06:30 was a bit much....so I got my legs wet and left. Following the 'Exit' sign, yes someone has painted a sign blue with an arrow. A grassy trail along a barbedwire fence for less than 50 yards out onto the road.If I'd known, I'd of taken the exit to get in. much easier on the eyes. Got back at 7:00, just in time for breakfast, another buffet! Eggs, pancakes, fried bannanas, fruit, and juices...I got eggs and pancakes with apple juice. All fueled ... read more

9/02/06 Saturday Day 2 at Hacienda Guachipelin (the Ranch) last day Again, little sleep, lots of interruptions, up before 06:00! Yup, again woke up just after twilight, very cool, I guessed @73F. Refreshing, no prevailing smells! So off I go.....just outside the entrance I found the sign: "Lookout Poiint"....up the trail. COOL! Its a stucco 'rancho' with electricity and a banjo (bathroom) up on a knoll that is higher than the Ranch. Looks out over the forrest with an excellent view of the mountains, particularly, Rincon. OK, so I got pics on previous blog from this adventure, sue me! Lots of clouds coming from the Carribean side, clear towards the Pacific. There is a plaque embedded in the post says to the effect, the Electrical Society Association errected the building in 1997. (looks less than a ... read more

Rincon De La Vieja 9/02/06 Saturday OK then! I got to the destination, Rincon de la Vieja Lodge. Another old ranch turned tourist trap. Lots of open space here, horses, MORE yard geese! website: www.rincondelaviejalodge.net/photos.htm Its midday and the hammok is waiting for me. Well, that was refreshing! No NOISE! My body went to sleep, kinda like your leg does, but my mind was aware of everything around. Could they be twins? Nice athletic, thin, blonde of course, but, not talkative. Then, this place got full, all the other rooms were suddenly occupied. Its about 5:45, the bar is open, but not the restaurant, Magdalina(Magda) is behind the bar. A bus load, 19 Dutch, singles on a 3 week wirlwind tour, based here for 3 days. Robert stopped at the bar for a cervezsa... proceeds to ... read more

Tuesday started as every other day starts here. We get up at 6:30 so that we can be out of the painters’ way when they start at 7. As is often the case we were headed to the other side of the valley, and out of our comfort zone. We were going to meet a highly recommended guy about buying all of our appliances. We were early, and the guy was on Tico-time so we went into a paint-store to buy some supplies, and in typical Klein-fashion we locked the keys in the car. The appliance guy was over an hour late, and it took almost that whole time to get some locals to break into the car for us. Once we were finally done with the meeting and we were talking about other issues of ... read more

When we were out shopping with our “interior decorator” (see earlier entries) we discovered that prices would actually get significantly higher than the ticketed prices on items when the shopkeepers realized that you’re a gringo. So when we found a place that sold patio furniture that we liked, we were afraid what to expect when we asked for 3 sets in my broken Spanish. These places work like car-dealers in the US, where the shop-keeper needs to call the fabricator for a final price, regardless of the ticketed price. In the past this was when the price went up. At our local store, they actually made us a deal, coming down on all the sets! So, we ordered our furniture two weeks ago and picked it up today. It came out perfectly, and we decided to ... read more

Mike, Gerardo and I have just gotten back from a few days in San Carlos. What a great place! This is the third time we have ventured around the area and seem to enjoy the town more and more. We decided to head back up there for the day and check out a farm we had looked at last week. Funny part was that we didn’t expect to spend the night so we had no change of clothes, no toothbrushes, no hair brush, etc. What fun! Toothbrushes were easy enough to obtain but forget about a hairbrush (it took me 20 minutes to brush the dreads out of my hair this evening) and a change of clothes was simply not happening. No big deal. I’ve backpacked for long periods of time without a change of ... read more

August 31, 2006 On CR time! 12:10pm Yup! I am now in Costa Rica! A hell of a delay at George Bush International Airport, Houston, but finally got off the ground. All total. 40 minutes on the tarmac! So the pilot punched it and we were only delayed 8 minutes into Liberia. And as things go, my ride was NOT here waiting for me, so all the rental car reps tried to rent me a vehicle, then the hefe for the taxis spoke up and said he get me a taxi for a mere $50 yup, welcome to CR! The rep at the hotel, said he would have charged $30...go figure. Got a picture of me in front of the Aeroporto Liberia, thanks to that Hefe(boss)...seems I looked funny trying to take my own. I got ... read more

Festejos Patronales San Ramon 2006, August 24 to September 3. Our little town of San Ramon came alive. The preparations for the festival began while Craig was here earlier in the month. Roofs were built above the sidewalks surrounding the central park. ICE, our electric company strung electrical wiring all around the park and installing extra lights where needed. We were not prepared for what was about to hit our quiet, sleepy town. Wednesday, August 30th, Callista and I headed to town leaving Bill at home with the yard work. Our local friends had told us it was the ‘big’ day in town for the festival. Cal and I LOVE street festivals so we excited to see what made this day different than the others during the festivities. What a SURPRISE! Our first inclination that something ... read more
