Back from my first trip to discover more about Costa Rica! Barb & I had a nice trip. We saw and did most of what we wanted to.
To start us out on this four-day adventure we left Atenas on Wednesday February 2 in the morning by public bus, no chickens present, to head to San Jose. The route included going through Alajuela, where one of the two international airports is in CR, and the one I came into nearly one month ago. Once we made it to the Coca Cola Bus Station in San Jose we got a taxi to go to eh other side of the city to the Musoc Bus Station to head south to San Isidro. I took a few photos through the bus windows that I will post. They aren't the best as you can see since we were moving along in most cases. We ascended the "Cerro de Muerte" Pass, I mentioned before. It was foggy and cool at the top but that's certainly not surprising since it's 11,000+ ft. high! We made it into San Isidro around mid-afternoon.
The place we had originally planned to stay was much further out of town
that what had been indicated, it was so high up that it was pretty much sopped in with cool fog when we got there. Also the proprietors were not ready for us as they just had a large group leave and they had no food in the place! So our taxi driver suggested he could show us places closer to or in town that we might like. We ended up at Hotel Diamante Real, right in town so we could easily walk around town and visit the Feria on Thursday. The place was quite nice...photos to be posted soon.
So on Thursday morning we had the same taxi driver take us to the Feria. His name was Eladio, he actually kind of became our personal tour guide for the area before his car broke down on Friday night after taking us to a few outlying areas around San Isidro.
Unfortunately I was so enthralled with the Feria I forgot to take photos! Not happy with myself about that one! Anyway not only was this Feria HUGE but back in the left corner were many Gringo booths since they have quite a large expat community there as well. A
number of the expats and other non-Ticos look like a flashback to the hippies in the late 60's and early 70's. We also hear about a few different spiritual communities in the general area. I spoke to people from Israel, Belgium and Holland. And of course some from the US. We even found some gluten-free treats there at the Feria! WOW!
Besides wanting to see some of the more interesting areas and attractions of CR, Barb & I are thinking ahead to next year...if we both or just one of us returns to winter in CR ....would we want to have our home base be Atenas again? Since before this trip neither of us have seen much of CR except Atenas (besides the 9 or so days I had in San Pedro/San Jose.)
After our 2+hours at the Feria we spent some time in the Central Market as well as the Central Park. The weather was very similar to here in Atenas during the four days we were there. The population of San Isidro is about 350,000. Eladio explained to us that includes many pueblos around the general area and that he expects they will eventually make a
province of San Isidro so the city itself will be a much smaller core area.
Later we called Eladio to have him drive us through some small pueblos not too far from San Isidro. Most weren't much but Rivas was very quaint. After a couple of hours of touring around he dropped us off at a restaurant near our hotel.
