We´re coming to you live from Monteverde/Santa Elena Costa Rica. Where it´s become a bit touristy, but the zip lines and Nature Reserves are well worth a visit. We decided on a jeep boat jeep tour to get us here from La Fortuna to save us from one of the most famed roads in Costa Rica-mentioned in our guide book as an instant qualification for the merit badge of courage. It also saved us 7 hours in a bus where, in this country, motion sickness is more common than in a boat. So, jeep boat jeep really was a bus, to a boat, to a van. It was slightly less rugged than we anticipated, but it was still quite a ride!! We stopped after a short while on our van ride. We thought it was ... read more

So, we were pretty excited to go to MonteVerde and check out the cloud forest, get a little rain, yada yada. Well, I think this was the dryest place so far. They are supposed to have 2 seasons....wet and more wet. We didn´t see a drop of rain. Nor did we see a forest in the clouds. OK, first the drive there. It is advertised as a Jeep Boat Jeep tour to get from LaFortuna to MonteVerde. Sounds pretty fun? Well, there was no Jeep to be found. It was more like Van Boat Van. And the roads! Wow! We were driving on the side of a cliff for 2 hours. It was the craziest road that I have been on so far. The locals keep the roads in rough conditions to try to keep people ... read more

Well I guess it is my turn at this bloggy thing. Let me start with, wow what a country. With the warm climate, rainforests, beaches, jungles, abundant wildlife, relaxed Tico culture and ease of travelling it would be difficult not to enjoy your time here. With a country that is nearly 25% protected, no military and a booming eco-tourism industry it should be an example to nations around the world. As you have heard from Ang things having going well with loads of sights so far and plenty of chillin as well. Started with some beach time on the Caribbean coast and now into the central plains and mountains. It is nice to travel with no set times just taking as we wish and getting comfortable with the towns we are in. Angela has settled in ... read more

So we left nicuragua and ometepe island and headed for costa rica at 5:30 in the morning. We took a ferry to get back to the mainland, and i should call it a chicken ferry, we were sitting inside the boat and we were getting loaded up with animals and all the pineapples you would ever want to eat. The boat looked like it was going to sink at any minute and i truly thought that was going to happen midway through our ride because there was water filling the bottom of the boat! but no one seemed alarmed, its just a regular thing in these parts. When we arrived on the mainland we didnt even dock, the boat pullled up alongside another boat and through a plank down and we had to skimmy across it! ... read more

After Samara we headed to Monte Verde for the opposite of our recent beach life. This town was in the hlls about 1500m high. It was a nice and cool breezy place which I prefer to the heat of a beach and it was nice to walk around without dripping in sweat for a change! We have come here to do more hiking around the National Park and also because it a good place to see Resplendent Quetzal bird which we have been trying to see since Guatemala, which is their national symbol. They have bright red, green and white feathers and are an important Mayan symbol. It is said that the red chested feathers appeared on the bird after a Spanish conquestador killed an important Mayan leader and the bird flew down and rested his ... read more

So, this weekend I went to Montevrede. I think it's supposed to be a rainforest but I think cloud forest is more appropriate. The trip there was the most beautiful yet, so beautiful that the bus actually pulled over at one point so we could all talk pictures and just soak it all in. I was in awe...I saw a sunset I have only dreamed of. I just sat on the bus listening to my music and staring out the window. It is hard to convey how amazing it felt...it was almost like a moment of clarity. It's unreal to be so close to perfection. That night we stayed at a hotel on a mountain and it was FREEZING! There was a bonfire, which was great, though, and we had a perfect view of the stars. ... read more

What a drive to this place. You cannot travel by car up this mountain. You need a 4 x 4 or a truck. The roads are a mess as the local quakers will not allow them to be upgraded. They want to preserve their natural state. We bounced up and down all the way up. This is a very rustic town, like the old west. Tourists do get up there but its not easy. We stayed in a nice lodge with another nice view. There is mist all around us up in these clouds. Their land is very fertile here. The temperature is comfortable. We saddled the morning of the 30th. A private ride with a Costa Rican family. Dad, 12 yr old boy, who spoke fluent spanish, and his 4 yr old brother. We did ... read more

Chapeau! Notre premiere ... read more

We left the Rainsong Wildlife Sanctuary in the making to continue on a quest to see more of Costa Rica’s celebrated wildlife and less of its ex-pats. Santa Elena was our destination - a small town at the end of a beautiful bus ride up into the highlands. We arrived just as the sun was setting behind the hills and we headed straight to our hostel of choice - Pension Santa Elena - where we hoped to meet up again with Joe, who had left Rainsong only a few days before us. As fate would have it Joe was sat just inside the door as we walked into the packed hostel. Even though initially the receptionist said all the beds were full, she kindly worked something out for us so we could stay and we headed ... read more
