Hey Everyone!
So i think today was my second favorite day here so far. We woke up around 7:45 because Myles set his alarm so we could get to our plans. We got up and headed to Banana Azul to rent some bikes again. We got on the road around 8:45. We were heading to the Jaguar Sanctuary just south of town. The sun was shining, which was nice because the past couple of days have been kind of over cast and rainy. When we got up we did not want to put on any sunblock or bug spray because we heard that you can not hold the animals at most of the sanctuary places because its bad for the animals skins. So we jumped on our bikes and peddled quickly into town trying not to burn in the early morning sun.
The evil seat on my bike would not stay up, and the ride into town was horrendous. But, once we made it to the Jaguar rescue it was all worth it. I had heard that a french family decided to start adopting animals that had been miss-cared for by their owners and opened their house to the
public to raise awareness to prevent this. We entered the compound at about 9:35 and the current tour had already started so we just kinda joined in and began listening. They started out with the local snakes. There are a lot of interesting and poisonous snakes that live here locally. Its a change from the snakes in the states because the snakes here are so colorful. After the snakes we moved on to the toucan, who did not like all of the people crowding around his cage. He was really colorful and it was cool to see him because we have been hearing toucan calls, but was have yet to see one in the wild. After the toucan, we got to visit the monkeys. I have always wanted to hold and play with monkeys, but have never gotten the chance. They were soooo cute. They loved both of our hair. They pulled and played with Myles and chewed on mine (lol). There were about 3 other people in the cage with us so it was a really personal experience to hangout with the monkeys and spend some time with them. When we were done with the monkeys our guide showed
us some jaguars. Two different kinds. And then she showed us some raccoons that they had rescued. Myles liked the raccoons. They made some really cute chirpy noises.
Finally when we were done with all that they took us into a small clearing and brought out two baby sloths. This was my favorite part of the whole day. I got to see a sloth a couple of days ago in the wild, but she was so high up in the tree i couldn't see her all that well. But, these little babies were within touching distance. The guide walked out with them hanging off of her shirt, and then after talking a bit about them she put them on two trees and just let them climb around while people took pictures. I got some really good ones of both the three towed sloth and the two toed sloth (yay backpack!). I seriously want to take one home and love it forever. It makes me want to get seriously involved in conservation to help them out. After watching the sloths climb around on the trees and make little meowing noises we went to go see some red eyed tree frogs
and an alligator. The frogs are not poisonous and so the guide was holding them for us to take pictures. At the rescue center they also had some normal animals, horses and chickens. We decided that we would most definitely have to take Cindy and George there. We had a lot of fun and it was a really neat experience.
After the tour we wanted to go to this "Caribbean fried chicken" place that we have seen along the road on the way back from the rescue center. Sadly it was closed. Its so crazy the time schedule that these people keep. Its neat that they can close when ever they want, but inconvenient for me. Lol. Since they were not in we stopped by Monita Bonita's to talk to one of our friends, and he convinced us to come in and try the deli sandwiches that they were serving for lunch. After our disappointing meal there last night we were reluctant, but decided to give them another chance. We went up stairs, sat down, and ordered. Last nights meal was not great, but these sandwiches were delicious. And after that loooong bike ride it was so nice to
sit down, relax, and eat some yummy food. A couple of glasses of water later, we decided to head back home. We made one pit stop along the way to pick up some cigars for George's arrival.
When we got home we went to the beach to take a dip. Then we had to drop off our bikes and pick up our laundry at Banana Azul. Of course our favorite puppy was there to greet us. I'm not sure if i have mentioned her before in our blogs, but there is a puppy at Banana Azul that looks a lot like our dog at home (Evie) except that she is brown instead of black. She has the same markings and the same kind of attitude. We love her, and if she wasn't so attached to her owners here, i would want to take her home. Anyways, we finished up our business there and headed to our place to relax for a little bit before walking to town to get Cindy and George. Their bus was getting in at 4:30 so around 3:30 we headed into town again to meet them. On our walk one of the buses passed us
and we were worried that Cindy and George would be on it, so we rushed to meet it, but it turns out that bus was coming from somewhere else. As we were waiting for the real bus to get there, we had an empenada. I have been begging Myles to get some for me in town, but every time we get to one of the stands it is closed or the person running it is not there?! The empenadas were great, and a nice little snack while waiting. Right on time the bus pulled up and we helped Cindy and George unload their stuff. We grabbed a taxi and headed home. We showed Cindy and George around the house and then took them to the beach to check it out. Then we went home for dinner. Myles made some spicy rice with hot peppers, pork chops marinaded in some local sauce, and fresh pineapple. Dinner was alright. It is the first time we have cooked meat (besides bacon and sausage) on the stove top. Its interesting not having a oven or a grill. Now that Cindy and George are here safe and sound we have been relaxing on the porch,
listening to music and the waves. Myles and George are smoking some cigars. Its a hard life. Lol.
Tomorrow we are heading into town early to go to the farmers market, breakfast at Bread and Chocolate, and then to the Botanical Gardens to introduce Cindy and George to the local flora and fauna. The next week is going to be an eventful one. Good night everyone. Sleep well. After this day I'm sure we will 😊
