After a crowded 3 hour bus ride from Belize City, I made it to the town of San Ignacio. I stayed with some friends at their jungle resort on the first night. The place is out in the boonies 5 miles from town. They have made the place very nice, but still have a long way to go. It will be very nice when they are finished. The following day I went to the ruins of Xunatunich. You cross the river on an old hand cranked water ferry and then it is a mile hike to the ruins. The largest Temple is 130 feet and you are able to see Guatemala from the top. I stopped into the Inn at Xunatunich after wards and met a woman by the name of Carina. We made quick friends ... read more

Finally made it to vacation! I got off the boat yesterday around noon and headed out to Caye Caulker. Which is a little island about a 45 minute boat ride from the mainland of Belize. I am staying at a hostel here and have met a couple of real cool people including a couple from Holland, Tony and Katie from Minnesota, and a group of girls from Australia. I will be traveling to the Cayo district in a few days to visit some friends who just opened up a resort there. Gotta go, more to come... read more

Following our stay in Flores we returned to Belize for our two night canoe trip down the belize river. We started out near San Ignacio and used Tony's River Guides to take us down the river. These guys were all really awesome, friendly and a couple of them were pretty cute. The canoe trip was actually pretty relaxing and we saw lots of wildlife along the way including iguanas, crocodiles, various birds, and monkeys. At night we camped and the guides cooked for us (these guys had all sorts of talents...i should have brought one home with me!). Surprisingly night time in belize is cold. Maybe I had already become accustomed to the heat, but even as a Canadian I felt chilled in the tents at night. At the end of the trip we returned to ... read more

“I can’t Belize the bus has broken down!” And so began our journey into beautiful Belize. With a name like Belize its hard not to try and insert it into every possible sentence. It has such a faraway, exotic sound to it, it really is hard to Belize you are in Belize when you finally arrive in what was once known as British Honduras (but got a kickarse name instead - for more information on the problems with Honduras see my earlier blogs). In the usual fashion of our trip the rains had followed our journey and Belize was in flood. We originally were going to stop off at a border town and do some remarkably overpriced (but equally awe-inspiring) caving, but the rains had come and filled the caves and instead we spent our first ... read more

Guess who's back on the caribbean coast again, dear reader, with the rasta cats feeling bless-ed man? Yes that's right, it's your intrepid travel journalist happy to post this entry from Belize. Within a minute of arriving at the bus terminal in Belize City I walked around the corner and saw two local women; one of whom approached with outstretched arms, missing teeth but a winning smile and said to me ¨Hey baby, come to mama!¨ Well, that sure was an interesting opening gambit. So anyways, I go a little further down the street towards the marine terminal, and give some skin when offered by a rasta cat who was chilling with his brothers. The cat glances at my face and says ¨Hey man, why you look like that?¨ Apparently I've been away from the caribbean ... read more

Hello! Andrew is too drunk to contribute and he is swirling on an office chair with an orange and vodka in his hand and he also has a whole pineapple on his lap. We are in a strange bar / internet / TV lounge / chess club in San Ignacio. Jan 14th 06 We were up at 4:30am to catch a 5am bus to the Tikal ruins, one of the largest and most famous ruin sites in Cent. America. It is different from the other ruin sites because it is in the jungle, and while you walk around the ruins you see lots of beautiful birds and hear howler monkeys. The main word to describe Tikal is BIG - the temples are BIG, there are LOTS of them (over 4000 structures), and they are spread out ... read more

I'm staying in another jungle lodge, this time in Belize. This lodge has composting toilets, tarantulas and army ants. Oh fun! If slightly scary! Yesterday we arrived at lunchtime, then promptly went tubing. This is where you go down a river on a huge inner tube, over rapids and everything. It was slightly hair-raising, particularly the time where I came off after a rapid, then found myself in a real life whirl pool! Luckily I lived to tell the tale... Today we went for a hike across jungle territory to some waterfalls. It was a round trip of 12 miles. It was actually quite easy going, but we didn't take enough water and by the end walking in the sun was very hard work! We had to stomp our feet to scare of any snakes. I ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Belize January 16th 2006

I was hoping to get down to Placencia to see my friend Mario in one day from Tulum, but managed to just miss the last flight from Belize City (by 10 minutes), so had to spend the night in Belize City. I got the bus from Tulum to Chetumal on the border, then another bus took me from Chetumal across the border at Corozal and then onto Belize City. I left Tulum on 8.15am bus but didn't end up arriving in Belize City till just after 4.30pm when the last flight went. I spent the night at a hotel right on the river. There's not much to write about Belize City really .. not the nicest of places .. and somewhere you wouldn't choose to stay if you didn't have to. I got the first plane ... read more

Belize city turned out to be a bit of a hell hole, and 1 night there was more than enough. It's dirty, smelly, falling apart and there is someone waiting to hustle you on every corner. The following morning we packed up and set off early for San Ignacio via Belize Zoo. Upon entering the zoo Karen was 'stoked' to discover Steve Irwin and Dolly Parton were previous visitors. We got pretty snap happy and were tempted to pretend we had taken the photos on a jungle trek as the animals were easy to view in their natural surroundings. We collected our bags from the nice lady in the gift shop and continued on our way to San Ignacio. The town turned out to be a nice surprise and we have stayed longer than expected. The ... read more

well we made it to tikal after spending a couple of nights in san ignacio. Tikal is right up with there with some of the most amazing places that I have seen in my life. The spread of buildings involves 6 major temples, the tallest of which shoots into the sky at well over 200 ft. Although the temples are incredible it may be the setting that truly makes Tikal so special. It is crazy to walk through the dense jungle and suddenly.....BAMN there is huge temple in front of you. It just smacks you in the face. Then you travel down the trail and .....BAMN there´s another one. Monkeys - Tikal is just flush with them. Mostly squirrel monkeys that you see swinging from tree to tree but it is the howlers that you hear. ... read more
