Belize - this is a country that anybody will find it hard not to fall in love with. Sorry its been a while, since I last wrote 10 days ago,we about to cross the border from Chetumal, Mexico into Belize. We actually decided to stay one more night after I wrote the previous blog as we didnt really fancy a night bus ride, so after a final selection of tacos for dinner, we were on the road the following morning for a whole new set of adventures in Belize.... Our introduction in Belize was quite absurd. After a 30 minute bus ride to the border customs, we got out and amongst a host of impatient looking Mexicans, queued for our passport stamp. We watched as the others strolled through with all the ease in the world, ... read more

August 25, 2005 We arrive in the Cayo District via the chicken bus. It was a very interesting & long 2 hour drive. The bus was overpacked and everyone smelled like dirty diapers. We buy a couple of tamales from a street vendor at one stop. I loved mine but Dan´s wasn´t entirely feather free. YIKES! Hey, at least it wasn´t some sort of domestic animal fur. We almost miss our stop as there are no signs for Georgeville and our spanish speaking skills are minimal. I see our host at the side of the road and he waves us down as we are the only 2 white people on the bus. We yell for the driver to stop and he finally does. We are getting alot of looks from the locals. I hear several people ... read more

Maya Walk Tour Offices, San Ignacio Ended up at Martha's for dinner last night. Ran into Lucien and his dad and George along the way. Caroline and her brother and their family were already eating at Martha's when we arrived. Matt went with pizza (good, but not nearly NY quality) and I had a huge burrito. Ran into Lucian and his dad again and the four of us went to the Internet Cafe and then on to Deja Vu (run by a crazy German guy) just across the bridge in Santa Elena for my final Belekin of the trip. I think I'll actually miss the beer. Headed home around 11:30 pm and crashed. Got up at 6:30 this morning and booked a spot on a direct shuttle to the airport. So much nicer than getting ... read more

We were up early this morning for the trip to Tikal. Met at Max's place around 7:15 am - there was coffee and apple sweet cakes waiting. So fantastic. Seven of us (4 from LA, 3 from London) set out for Guatemala. Uneventful border crossing. Eventually go to the ruins where we met our guide, Mario. The ruins were amazing. We saw spider monkeys and all sort of insects. Climbed the pyramid and Temple IV - both impressive. Then lunch. Then a canopy tour - 8 different zip lines above the trees. So cool. Then a stop for souvenirs and back across the border. Now a quick shower and rest before we head back out in search of food. ... read more

Placencia - Omar's Place Saturday morning we were up bright and early. Broke down camp (and wasn't at all sad to be rid of the smallest, leakiest tent ever) and packed everything onto the boat. We had spent the evening drinking rum punch and watching the moon rise. So great. We had breakfast on the boat and set off for our first snorkel spot out on the reef. It was quite beautiful - shallow patchy reef formations teeming with fish. I could have stayed there all day. Lunch was on the boat - fruit and bologna sandwiches. Then we struggled to make good time to Tobacco Caye. Along the way we were quite successful with fishing, including two enormous barracudas. There was no shortage of food for the night and we were looking forward to barracuda ... read more

Sailing is the best decision I've made so far. Started out with breakfast at Herbal Tribe - just a bagel as I suspect that I was mildly hungover. Then up the boat and we were off. We have Sara and Alex (San Diego/Long Beach), John & Terry, Jamie and Philip, Matthew (London), Richard (England) and Thomas (Germany). Good group. Stop 1 was a snorkel in a channel. The guys went spear fishing and came back with a lobster. Apparently there was a manatee, but I didn't see it. Then lunch (chicken and cocounut rice and fruit - so good!) and a nap while we continued on. We were largely unsuccessful with fishing, so we had to buy from fisherman right off of Lighthouse Caye. Was quite a hassle. And as soon as we left them we ... read more

I'm finding my final morning here to be quite sad - I wish I had a month. I'm not at all ready to leave. Well - my feet are ready - I've never had such horrible blisters in my life - at least 3 on each foot. At least I'm getting on a boat where I won't have to wear shoes. Last night found us bar hopping. Janneke, Warren, Alex and I went to the Ocean Side Bar & Grill to meet Barbara. Janneke and I each had a rum runner - huge, fruity, and way too much rum. We played darts, then Janneke, Warren and I went to Herbal Tribe for guacamole and cuba libres. Then rejoined with Alex and Natasha and headed off to the I and I. Plenty of crazy reggae guys, but ... read more

August 19, 2005. We arrive at the ariport in Belize City and order 2 rum drinks to celebrate. They were SO strong! We took a puddle jumper to Ambergris Caye. The hotel was a nice, ocean front suite with a full kitchen. We immediately signed up for diving the next day - 2 local reef dives and 1 night dive. We settle in, take a dip in the ocean and head out for dinner. We ate at a nice restauant on the water. It started to rain so we sat inside but the view was still incredible. Outstanding ceviche and a really tasty blue rum fishbowl drink. We go to bed early in preparation of many dives tomorrow. We wake up in the middle of the night to a tropical storm and have to shut all ... read more

The island life is definitely suiting me well. Got up around 6 am when the guys woke me. We'd all been out to I and I bar the night before (mmm...Belekin Beer!) but Barbara (from Holland) and I went back not long after an island wide power outage at 10:30 pm. It was a hot and muggy night with rain and no fans - tough to pass out. Anyhow, we all grabbed some tea upstairs, then sat outside the tsumani office until they opened at 8 am so we could rent snorkeling equipment. Then Billy (from Atlanta) and I went to snorkel at the spit for a while. Not the best snorkeling ever, but enjoyable nonetheless. Besides fish we saw some cool jellyfish-like urchins, conch and starfish. Billy was always quick to dive down and bring ... read more

LAX This is by far my boldest trip yet. One week. No traveling companions. No lodging pre-booked. Tme to see how I do thinking on my feet and just exploring. And relaxing. I can't wait. I think that I've been so busy for the past few years pursuing my career that I haven't bothered to stop and pursue adventure. That being said, 30 is not all that far off, and I need to start accomplishing all the fun, adventurous things I can before life manages to tie me down further. My only real goal on this trip is to experience new things - places, people, foods, activities. I think that Belize holds a lot of promise for that. It's also an opportunity to stretch my social skills and make new friends. And most importantly to renew ... read more
