Blogger Bec Well here we are in the wonderful Caye Caulker, an island off Belize (Check out our map if you don't know where we are!!). We are now travelling with our tour group, having come from Cancun in Mexico down into Belize. We caught the sea taxi out to Caye Caulker yesterday afternoon and have spent today snorkelling in the reef about ten minutes boat ride out from our hotel on the beach. First stop was Ray Alley where up to 15 sting rays were swimming around us in maybe 6 feet of water. The colour was immaculate. The guide was great but I wasn't too keen on how they feed the rays in order for them to stay around. He was also touching them and I just find that contradictorary to the whole ... read more
Snorkelling, Caye Caulker, Belize

Back on the bus, but did have the excitment of my first chicken bus (the old US st lye school buses) I'm sure I´ll be sick of them pretty soon but all good for now. On getting off the bus we were greeted by the only mean nasty and rude Bedizen person I met, he was trying to rip us off for a taxi and then when we said no went off at us like he had turret's, so we walked all the way- I am a hardcore backpacker now after all. So after the trek down and the water taxi we arrived at the small island of Caye Caulker, bliss. Its a tiny place that with a real Caribbean feel. the island is tiny, so small that the tree streets over are simply called front, ... read more

From Tulum we made our way to Caye caulker in Belize. We took an overnight bus from Tulum to Caulker for nice 12 hours. Belize city is pretty run down so we pretty much bolted for the ferry to caulker. Key caulker is SUPPPPPPPPER laid back. Some nights we would just walk up and down the main road (i.e. a sand passage way) extremmelly slow, saying hi toeveryone and then repeating. WE did dive the blue hole here. it was amazing! we got to dive at 140 feet below with reef sharks and other big fish. we also did some snorkelling with some awesome animals.... read more

Go Slow thats what u'll here on the streets of Caye Caulker. So I've been here for basically a month now. Love it. Just sitting back and relaxing. Tons of sailing, fishing, scuba divign. Just finished my advanced scuba training. Loved itl. Dove down to 135 feet. That is really deep. but great diving here. Tons of giant grouper, lobster, rays, eels, and anything else u could coem up with. I'd say it might even be better than the great barrier. All u need is a pair of boardies and a bcd the water is so warm. But tons of great reef life. So went fishing today it was a little windy. On the way back all we caught was a shit hawk. So funny. It was nipping at my hands while i untangled it. Don't ... read more

Hello there everyone With Christmas over, it was time for me to move on with my travels. The sea off the coast of Belize is dotted with dozens of small islands, known as cayes. I decided to head for Caye Caulker, a well known backpacker destination. A short journey of 45 minutes in a water taxi and I was there. Back in Mexico, an American called Chuck gave me a recommendation on a place to stay on Caye Caulker. It turned out to be good. Nice one Chuck. For a tenner a night, I stayed in a small wooden hut perched high above the beach on stilts. There was a balcony complete with my new favourite accessory, a hammock. The view was picture perfect looking out over the Caribbean Sea. I had told my American travel ... read more

All right well xmas was fabululous. We cooked my snapper and had lobster, shrimp ke-babs, and everything else. Basically I've been relaxing and hanging around. The Island modo is "GO SLOW". So that is what i;ve been doing. Lots of Sailing wiht Richard and hanging out down at the split. All the locals know me by name now so its always an interesting evening going out. The fishing has been great. We've basically brought home a monster fish every time. So much fun. For New Years me and my parents went out for some dinner at herbal tribe then for drinks down at I&I. Great times. I was spanked! Started to drink at like 4. Great Fun!. But I know everyone back home is jealous but no worries, I have to come back to reality in ... read more

Well, after buzzing around Guatemala and Mexico, and spending every other day on a bus, Caye Caulker in Belize was exactly what I needed. The caye is a 45 minute boat ride from sketchtown Belize City. Forget cars, forget paved roads, forget ambition; the pace of life on Caye Caulker is almost at a standstill. The entire island is a beach spotted with lazed out tourists and dreadlocked rhastafarians. The only way to get around is walk, bike, or catch a lift on one of the many golf carts buzzing around. The first day there I went on a snorkelling tour out to the second largest reef in the world, the largest in this hemisphere. I was unreal. Lots of life, we saw a huge spotted eagleray within our first few minutes. Then the guide brought ... read more

They say man isn't meant to live underwater. Well I survived my first few ocean dives. Previously I had only dove in a small man-made lake in Ohio for my certification in June. Reef-diving in Belize is a little different! Belize has the largest barrier reef in the western hemisphere and the largest in the world after the Great Barrier Reff in Australia. I stayed on Caye Caulker, one of the main islands off of Belize mainland, about a half-hour boat ride from the unfortunate capital Belize City (i will put off my experience of this city until next time). The island itself is supposed to be a tropical paradise...and it is pretty, though I didn't really like staying there because of the noise and there are all these decrepit characters lying around whose main job ... read more
