We arrived at Hoffmans Cay and found it to be a great little spot to enjoy all that the Berry Islands had to offer and ended up staying there for over a week because we liked it so much. Not only was there still great fishing but we were nestled in between lots of smaller islands which we could explore. Out typical day was to read and enjoy our coffee in the cool morning breeze. Around noon the sun would get high in the sky and we would all start getting hot. That is when we would start the process of gathering up all our stuff for the beach. Once at the beach Kona and Zoe would swim (Kona’s favorite new game is to chase after rocks that we would throw in the water) while we ... read more

After a week at Market Fish Cay we were running low on fresh vegis and decided to go to Great Harbor Cay, the only island in the Berries that has a grocery store. We mainly needed green peppers and tomatoes, the key ingredients for conch salad (which is similar to ceviche- very tasty!) So we sailed the two hours and anchored off a beautiful bay in Great Harbor. This half moon bay is a couple miles long with soft white sand and small bohemian cottages that were just adorable. In the middle of the bay is the beach club, a great restaurant that serves breakfast and lunch. We went there one day for lunch and had a wonderful time; it has an impressive view of the bay and is nestled in some palm trees. Great Harbor ... read more

We first arrived at Market Fish Cay after sailing from the Abacos and dropped anchor there for several days. This is a beautiful island, very long and narrow that is lush with trees and scrub. However at the center of the island just above the beach area there are no trees or shrub, just sand and rock. This allowed us to have a great view of the Atlantic Ocean on the other side of the island, which is very unique. We are very excited to be here in the Berries and the spot we are anchored at is well protected and very scenic. It was while we were at Market Fish Cay that we discovered the “honey hole”. I am not sure if it was Jay or Chris who came up with the name honey hole, ... read more

We left the Sea of Abaco and sailed out across the Atlantic to the Berries, another island chain in the Bahamas. The geography of this area always amazes me. There literally are hundreds of islands in the Bahamas and they are divided into separate groupings by the deep Atlantic Ocean. The three major sets of island we want to go to are the Abacos, the Berries, and the Exumas. The water in between the islands is very shallow, 10-15 feet at most, because they are all on the bank. But as soon as you go thru an inlet, off the bank and into the Atlantic Ocean, the depth drops to 3000 feet within a half a mile. It is truly an amazing experience when you sail between these island chains, and can be quite nerve racking ... read more

I'll attempt a synopsis of the week that followed: Jan 6 I awoke to a calm anchorage. Coming up on deck, I noticed a sea turtle floating past in the distance. I had coffee and breakfast, and discussed with the others what possible, leisurely itinerary we could take over the next few days. These plans would be nixed. Not even an hour later, we noticed the waves increasing and darker clouds looming. Captain then shouted, "We're dragging anchor!!" Stress, yells, the burn of the motor, the heaving bow as it heads out of the inlet, thrusting up and plunging down (with me on it) as waves and current plow through into the anchorage. We abandon Slaughter's Harbour, head north an hour, hoist the genoa, tack (turn to the east) and set a course south around the ... read more
