Europe » Spain » Castile & León » Salamanca July 21st 2006

I dare say Salamanca is one beautiful and relaxed city. Everything is made in sandstone, from the eldest of the many churches till the newest building in the city-center, all respecting the idea behind Salamanca and all being a pleasure to the eye. But except from Salamanca being a very charming city with a more amazing building on each street corner, I find myself rather stressed. My friend with whom I left all my stuff in Madrid and to who's place I had planned to arrive tomorrow is not feeling well and her family chose to take her to the seaside. This is understandable enough, but leaves me with great problems. I had hoped to chance some things at her place, get laundry done and empty my memory cards into my laptop. Now I have to ... read more

Europe » Portugal » Lisbon & Tagus Valley » Lisbon July 19th 2006

I have some strange feeling, whenever I go to Portugal of being lost to the rest of the world. It seems that Portugal is in a category quite of its own. And the Portugese are not disatisfied with this. You often here a sentence ending with; well this is Portugal and then a smile or laugh indirectly asking you, if you can handle it. But let me give an example or two of what Portugal then is. I have been visiting some very good friends in Lisabon for the last week and am now in Porto trying to find my way back to Spain. The day I arrived to Lisabon my friend had to go to his hometown of Evora, one hours drive from Lisabon to witness in a trial. He went all the way on ... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Seville July 11th 2006

I have often thought that I would melt like a snowman in the spring if I should ever experience 40 degrees or more. I almost skipped ever going to Sevilla as I heard of the horrible temperatures. But now I am here and experiencing the third day with 47 degrees, and I have come to discover that even though it is hot, and believe me it is hot, it is not impossible, for this snowman at least, to survive. With lots of water and a trip to the overly air-conditioned El Corte Inglés every half an hour I have been able to make my way and see the beauties of Sevilla. Unfortunately I have arrived just as they are changing the entire infrastructure and all sights and streets seem to be under construction. But I guess ... read more

Africa » Morocco July 10th 2006

But I am a blonde Scandinavian girl! Before arriving in Tangier I had prepared myself for the large amount of hazling which I understood from other travellers was the norm in the sea port. I had put on my most fierce look, even practising it in the mirror. I was actually starting to look forward to the hazles with some kind of "you just try" attitude. But as I stepped food on Africa for the first time in my life, nothing happened. No hazling, no taxi drivers offering "good" deals or people trying to sell weird items, while constantly following you. This kind of upset me. Being a blonde Scandinavian and single female traveller I would have expected just some hazling. Offcourse my first thought was quite irrational as I started wondering whether I was smelling ... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Málaga July 9th 2006

I'm writing this a bit late since I've had a week without internet. But I feel that Malaga needs to get an entire essay because so many things happened there. I was only in Malaga for two days. I didn't really go to the beach and saw little more than the Picasso museum, the center, the hostel and offcourse Freaggie Rocks. But the hostel was amazing. It seemed as I entered not to live up to the standard of Granada, but as I look back I have noticed that I hardly left the hostel. Partly because it was to hot and partly because two Dutch guys spent the entire time playing guitar and entertaining the crowd of bagpackers. It was some great days in Malaga, with company of some very interesting travellers. I believe that Malaga ... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Granada June 28th 2006

This is the beginning of my journey through Spain, Morocco and Portugal. Granada, Andalucia I went to Granada to stay at a youth hostel I had seen good ratings for on the internet, but which had a weird name - Funky. It was pretty late when I arrived and at the moment I entered I went straight to the bar on the roof, swallowing a galleon of water, while looking at an amazing view of the old town. Within half an hour of cooling off and taking in the view, I also became acquinted with two American travellers, who as me needed a bit of refreshment. It became the begining of a really great stay. one of the Americans was half Spanish and for the next couple of days I gave him order to choose all ... read more

I arrived to Madrid yesterday and was greeted by my friends family in the airport. It is really great since the mother is English and they therefore are acquinted with English language. It makes my sudden arrival into the Spanish tongue less difficult. When I arrived the younger sister of my friend had a party at their pool. It was amazing to meet so many people of whom I had been told so much by my friend. The wild sister and the shy sister and the brother who looks excactly like my friend -but with a growing moustage. The grandmother and mother who are both very lively and wonderfully nice and the father who told me that I should call him if I needed anything doing my stay. The house they live in is in El ... read more

Europe » Denmark » Region Hovedstaden » Copenhagen May 28th 2006

After a year of studying humanities at university, it seems like it is time to once again grab my bag and leave home. This time my journey takes me Southwest to La Peninsula, where I will study a semester in Madrid. I will be gone for seven months and two and a half of them will be on the road. I wont leave until the end of June, but I wish to give a little acount for the feeling of once again travelling abroad and what travelling means to me. But first let me say a few words about the year I had, after leaving my beautiful Ljubljana. I went home to start university five days after I returned to Ljubljana from my trip around the Balkans and felt pretty strange in having left the magic ... read more

Europe » Bosnia & Herzegovina » East » Sarajevo August 24th 2005

I arrived to Sarajevo late at night with the bus from Beograd. As I exited the bus I discovered that I wasn't at the bus-station which I had hoped. I was not at the central busstation, but at "the other" busstation 15km outside town...Shit... Lucky for me a local girl was to be picked up by her boyfriend and she offered me a ride with them into the center. So around 10.00 in the evening I finally after 20 hours of travelling got to the youth-hostel. And what a mess. The bed I had ordered wasn't there. And already one guy was sleeping on the couch in the kitchen. Luckily enough after an hour of waiting I got another couch made ready for me, and my backpack and I went directly to bed. Europe » Macedonia August 11th 2005

I arrived in Macedonia yesterday, after looking forward to it for a long time. The reason is a very good friend from Skopje who has tought me a lot about Macedonia and told me what to see. Unfortunately I'm still pretty sick and haven't even had the energy to try and find out if he's home or visit all the destinations he has pointed out. But I do believe, after only a little more than a day, that Macedonia is certainly a destination for later vacations. I'm in Skopje at the moment staying at a wonderful room with a real shower and cabel-tv. I haven't had a really nice shower in weeks, maybe a year considering the dorm I live in in Slovenia. And cabel-tv, - I can't even recall when I last watched real tv. ... read more
