Having visited New Orleans just a week ago, I have to say that Vegas should really pass the 'sin city' moniker to New Orleans. Vegas appears tame and orderly compared to the excess and debauchery around the French Quarter in New Orleans. Yes Vegas is still over the top, trashy and superficial but dare I say it, seems classier! I am staying at the Planet Hollywood casino/hotel and my room is spectacular especially the view across the hotel pools and across the road to the Bellagio fountain. The premium that I paid is certainly justified as it's not often you get to enjoy luxury like this. The bathroom itself is larger than some of the hotel rooms that I have stayed in during this trip. However I would not recommend this hotel to older folk looking ... read more

North America » United States » Texas » Dallas June 15th 2011

Well I spent about 48 hours in Dallas Texas and really didn't get up to much as I had to visit family out in Garland which is about a 30 minute drive from both DFW airport and downtown. I thought freeways in LA were hectic, they are even bigger in Texas! There might be a little less traffic but the number of elevated interchanges surely surpasses the LA system. It was quite exciting driving through them and marveling at the amount of road funding that has been injected over the years. Sydney couldn't do anything similar even if we had the money as due to poor town planning we have no room! Unless we knock massive amounts of homes and businesses over I think we are resigned to ridiculous traffic on small roads leading to the ... read more

Thought I would get up early and have a walk around before it got 2 hot but the plan kind of backfired when - 1. it was already hot and 2. nothing was open yet ! Must be a side effect of having big boozy nights and being unable to get up before noon the next morning. The French Market was only starting to set up and the sidewalks of the French Quarter were being hosed down - not a pleasant place to be when you consider the booze, vomit and urine that would be prevalent late at night. It seems that all the people that were awake had made their way to Cafe Du Monde as there was a line along the sidewalk and this place has plenty of seats and tables! As much as ... read more

Oh boy it's humid here in New Orleans. Arrived here just after lunchtime and was instantly assaulted by the heat. Miami was hot but a very different heat to what it is here in New Orleans. My taxi driver was an aggressive lady who was on the phone the whole time and speeding in the big SUV. The majority of taxis here seem to be of the SUV variety with only a minority of standard sedans. My hotel is massive, I didn't realise it when I had booked it a few weeks ago. It has internal gardens/courtyards and walkways so the window in my room doesn't see actual sunshine, just the internal courtyards. It is a historical building but everything seems pretty modern. The front desk were pretty friendly and let me check in very early. ... read more

I have never been anymore relaxed in my life I don't think. Wake up, go the beach, get some sun, find some breakfast, take a nap, get a late lunch, relax a little more, find some dinner, and then hang out. My favourite past time in Miami would be people watching. There are some funky folks here in Miami, I would love to blame the hot weather or excessive sun but there has to be some real underlying issues here. Even just sitting outside my hotel on the verandah reveals heaps of wierdos walking past or across the road in the park. I will be off to New Orleans tomorrow, back to busy sight seeing ! ... read more

Observation : It must be the excessive heat here that is to blame for the number of 'strange' folk roaming around Miami ! Have had 2 relaxing days so far in SoBe Miami and really haven't done all that much. Been hanging pretty close here to South Beach although I did venture to downtown today. Caught a $2 bus (with more wierdos) and rode around downtown on the free Metro Mover monorail. Then hang around Bayside Marketplace for a while, had brunch, listened to some live latino music before heading back to South Beach and continued to relax. Spent a few hours on the sand this morning just getting some sun. It was hot but there was a nice refreshing breeze which made lying in the open bearable. Kept thinking to myself that one could really ... read more

My last day in NYC was pretty quiet, did a little shopping and picked up a few bits and pieces for my old man. Tried to find a pair of black leather boots along 5th Ave and didn't find anything at all. Actually made my up to 72nd street in the Upper West Side and found Gray's Papaya which is the hotdog shop that Anthony Bourdain recommends for a late night eat. It was $4.50 for 2 small hotdogs with a decent sized papaya drink which was actually very refreshing. That was my highlight for the day in NYC. I was to fly in Miami at 1pm Monday and got the hotel to organise a town car pickup to take me to JFK. I wasn't willing to catch the subway all the way out to JFK ... read more

Racked up some mileage today on the NY subway system as I got around to some extremities of the subway network. First was my quick visit to Coney Island which saw me get to the southern terminus of the F subway line. You hear about Coney Island from media and see images of it during it's heyday so for me it was a tourist sight that needed to be seen and then ticked off the list. The area has improved in the last few years but I think the future is bleak for Coney Island amusement park. Being on the shore of Brighton Beach means that eventually big money will win out and buy up the whole area for development. The Brighton Beach boardwalk ain't bad and it's the best NY can come up but it ... read more

I managed to tick off some more boxes from my NYC to-do list today. I have been doing some real tame things and trying not to get too smashed each night as I know I won't have the energy to make it through these long days of sight seeing. In the city that never sleeps I have been trying to get a decent amount of sleep each night, mind you I don't really have a choice - struggling to keep the eyes open after midnight! First stop today was a stroll around the Greenwich Village area which is full of boutique stores, cafes and restaurants. There are heaps of little bars around as well and you have to love the whole cafe and bar scene here in Manhattan and I guess with this concentration of people ... read more

There was some accomplished pounding of concrete today as I trekked basically all over the city. First stop of the day was Central Park and the weather was a little cooler today but still quite warm. This oasis in the middle of the concrete jungle provides welcome relief and when the weather is this warm you can spot thousands of residents just relaxing and getting some sunshine on some grass all over this massive park. There are always fitness fanatics biking or jogging through the park and it is one safe place to be in my eyes. I started at the south end at the Columbus Circle entrance and zig zagged my way around the park heading north towards the Bethesda fountain and to the Great Lake. I was making pretty good time, I don't think ... read more
