Today was a shared day with Mariann. The weather is perfect. Summer has arrived with clear sunny skies. We met Mariann at 10.45 at Interlaken and got the old paddle ferry down Lake Brienz to Iseltwald which is a small village on the wooded side of the lake (not the sunny side). From here we walked up the hill and along to Geisbach where there is a high beautiful waterfall and lovely old hotel. This walk takes about 1.5 hours. At the hotel we had lunch before heading back to Iseltwald on the lower track on the lake front. Because the weather was so good and it was the weekend, there were heaps of people on the boats, walking or lunching out. We were please that most of our walk was in the trees otherwise it ... read more

The weather is reasonably clear. Good enough for a journey to Mt Pilatus. We took the train to Meirengen/Lucern which goes over the Brunigg Pass and on down to Lake Lucern. We got off the train at Alpnachstad where the cog railway to Pilatus leaves from. Many people thought the engineer who put forward the idea of building a railway up this mountain was crazy. I think he was too. It was built in 1889 and was steam until 1939. It is the steepest cog railway in the world and has a 48% gradient. It is 4.6km long and virtually goes straight up the steep mountain side to 2132m. The journey takes half an hour and is an absolute wonder. We all see pictures of the Schilthorn - well, this is like putting a railway up ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » South-West » Thun June 24th 2011

Yesterday was a wet and cool day so no mountains. A good day for shopping and looking around Thun which we did. Thun is a great town to visit at the end of Lake Thun with it's river bisecting and running through, the old town and the castle. I need add no more than that but if interested, check it out on the internet. We've visited many times before and always enjoy it. Today, we're still in gloomy weather in the mountains but okay in the lower areas so we headed to Aeschi which is a small village in the hills between Spiez and Frutigen. We haven't been here before and there are many trails around the vicinity. We took a bus from Speiz to Aeschi then walked along the hills above Lake Thun then down ... read more

Yesterday was an easy day - cleaning the house, doing washing, getting groceries down in the village, picking red currants and walking down from Itramen on the other side of the valley. Just a slow idle down the hill after getting the bus up. We then called at the Grindelwald Museum which is well worth a visit. It covers the history and life of the village, the glacier status, mountaineering and guiding, industry in the valley and a wonderful exhibition of black and white photography of the mountains. The clarity was amazing. In the evening the currants were cooked and strained ready to make red currant jelly the next day. Today was supposed to rain so we got organised for a trip to Thun. Then on checking the weather reports, the rain was going to arrive ... read more

The farmers have been cutting their grass for hay so the weather must be okay for a long hike. We took the chairlift to First to start the hike through to Schynige Platte. We did this hike 11 years ago with Kay, Kerry, Chris and Kathy so it brought back a few memories of sunburn, sore feet and racing to get to the transport before 6pm. This time we left plenty of time and we were doing it in reverse as we remember what a steep haul it was last time going the other way. First is at 2168m and we were to walk up to just below the Faulhorn at 2686m (about the height of Mt Taranaki). It is a well formed track up to the Bachalpsee (lovely) then on up to the Pass. From ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » South-West » Interlaken June 19th 2011

Today is the last day of the YodelFest in Interlaken which was about singing groups throughout Switzerland and overseas competing against each other. In the Festival were also alphorn players, and folk music groups. The attendance was supposed to be 20,000 participants and attendees. The finale was to be the Grand Parade through Interlaken which we attended. When we arrived by train just before 2pm the streets were lined with people and participants were ready to leave Interlaken Ost through to Interlaken West. We went to the West Station and waited there for the parade to come through. It was magnificent. There were at least 4 brass bands throughout the parade, dozens of singing groups, groups of alphorn players plus the flag throwers. As well as the music, there was the William Tell Cast in costume, ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » North-West » Berne June 18th 2011

As forecasted, it is raining. Everywhere. So nowhere to escape it by train. We decided to go to Berne and visit the Alpine Museum and Natural History Museum. There was the usual chaos at the bahnhof and a very busy city but we eventually found our way down through the old town and over the river to the musems. Berne is an interesting city with contrasts of old and new. The shops and pavements are sheltered by stone arched verandahs. The main street is for people and trams only so it's people friendly. There are many buskers and one street is for the market only on a Saturday. Since we have been here several times before there's no need to talk about the Old Town. This is always a city well worth visiting especially if you ... read more

Apart from some cloud settling around the mountains at a middle level, the day was fine so we walked down to Grund and got the cable car to Mannlichen. This is a longest cable way in Europe (not sure about the world). It takes 30 minutes to reach the top gliding over pastures, steep hills, forests and then high mountain pastures with many marmots. At the top is a 360 degree view of mountains towards Interlaken, to the east to Titless, then the mountains surrounding Grindelwald and the Lauterbrunnen valleys. It is spectacular and made all the more eerietoday by cloud swirling and lifting giving keyhole views over the valleys. From Mannlichen we walked the Panorama Trail to Kleine Scheidegg. This trail takes you face on to the Eiger with Grindelwald far in the distance below. ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » South-West » Mürren June 15th 2011

Today was supposed to be as fine as we could expect for a few days and if we were to go to the Schilthorn, then this was the day to do it. We caught the train to Lauterbrunnen and walked up the valley for an hour or so to Stechelberg. It was a very warm 28 degrees and we were happy to find a shady place for a picnic lunch. On arriving at the Schilthornbahn (cable car that carries 100+ people) we heard that the Schilthorn was in the cloud which isn’t surprising since it is 3000m high. There is no point in visiting the tops of peaks if you arrive in cloud especially if you have paid for the journey. The Swiss Pass covers us to Murren but not up the Schilthorn so we gave ... read more

An early start to the day with a text from Brendan in the middle of the night (wanting to Skype) followed by a rooster crowing before dawn. What the heck, I may as well get up and check in with our son. I spent the next 2 hours checking email, Skyping, checking "Stuff" and doing the blog. We wanted to know the situation with the Christchurch Earthquake and B's house at New Brighton. It is uninhabitable now which means no tenants to pay the mortgage. A very bad situation for a single wage family. Today is the start of the next stage of the Tour de Suisse in Grindelwald so we headed down at 10am for the entertainment. There were plenty of "give aways" - hats, bags, drinks, key rings, pens, soft toys mascots and much ... read more
