Today is a rest day after many consecutive days of biking. The body is saying enough is enough but that doesn't mean doing nothing. We walked from Obertraun to the Hallstatt railway station which is about a 45minute walk. From the Schiffstation (ferry stop), we took the ferry across the lake to Hallstatt which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of it's unique position and history. It sits right on the lakeside between the water and the cliffs which doesn't allow for much room for a village which is essentially carless. Hallstatt is known for its production of salt dating back to prehistoric times, and gave its name to the Hallstatt Culture, a culture often linked to Early Iron Age Europe. It's human history appears to go back 7000 years still based on the trading ... read more

Today we had to leave our lovely hosts, Robert and Catherine. We had so much enjoyed staying with them, but we must move on and cover the rest of the trip. The first leg was to bike back to Bad Ischl where we'd been a couple of days ago when it was raining. Today looked dicey too with a few spits but nothing major. We took an alternative route closer to Bad Ischl and guess what? We got off course again and had to backtrack to the right side of the river to get into town. We found the popular café known for it's cakes along the esplanade and ordered a couple of slices with coffee. Very nice. We had a walk through the central area and then figured we'd head across the river and up ... read more

After getting thoroughly wet yesterday, today is a beautiful clear, sunny and warm day. What a contrast! Our fellow cyclists from Arizona have finished their cycling holiday and left this morning. They will be replaced by another 2 people who weare yet to meet, but it will be fleeting as we leave for Obertraun tomorrow. After yesterday's long distance we decided on something a little shorter today, but unfortunately all uphill for the first part (so much for easy). Since it was sunny and likely to be hot we decided to take the Seilbahn (Cable Car) up to the Feuerkogl in the morning, a peak at 1600m which was along our intended route. I gather the name Feure refers to fire or hell - not sure why. On arriving at the top and marvelling at the ... read more

As the title says, it was wet, bloody wet AND we got lost! A brief respite though, with a little sun in between rain. As I did not want to do 70kms today, I took the train to Bad Ischl while Lindsay biked the 18km. By the time he arrived it started to rain - a big black cloud rolling in from the lake. We sat it out by having coffee and cake at the station and then put on our wet weather gear and heading out towards Lake St Wolfgang. We biked through undulating farmland with huge houses with barns attached. It was a very pretty area to bike through and quiet. St Wolfgang was a whole different story. It is a tourist town and there were bus loads of Asians and Oldies everywhere. I'm ... read more

After spending time Skyping my sister and getting all the Taranaki news, we set off for Gmunden which is down the other end of the Traunsee (Lake Traun). The weather was looking dicey so we loaded the pannier with our rain gear and lunches and a back pack for incidentals. It was also cold, much the same temps as we had been having at home before we left. On the way we passed the village of Traunkirchen which we visited 2 days ago and continued on the R2 bike path. It is a well marked biking path wide enough for 2 abreast on concrete or asphalt so it's pretty easy going. Close to Gmunden is a promontory covered with lovely trees and the building for Central Congress and the Land Castle Ort. Over a long wooden ... read more

Linds has found that his bike gives him sore wrists so another was to come from Obertraun (where we'll be in a few days). While we waited for the bike we headed off to explore Ebensee and do a circuit around the river on foot. The path we thought we'd take was washed out so we walked the road up the river to a bridge then back through farms and little lanes back to Rosenhof. By which time it was midday. Catherine had made our lunches to have at the house or take with us. We opted for half in half - some now, some later. We are certainly getting a nice selection in our lunch bags - filled rolls, fruit, a muesli bar and a fruit drink. We then sorted out the new bikes. They ... read more

Time to move on from Salzburg. It's another lovely day so we filled in the time until pickup by doing a circuit of the river and as we arrived back the driver taking us to Ebensee (Aybensee) had arrived. It was a hour and a half's journey in one very hot vehicle as the air conditioning only worked in the front. We thought that running the inside vehicle temperature at 35 would be a good practice for the Froudes going to Bangkok! However, despite the heat, the driver was friendly and informative. He eventually found the address at Ebensee and it seemed we wound our way through the whole town. On reflection, we did because we're at the back end from the lake. We're now settled into Gasthof Rosenhof which is a large modern guest house ... read more

What a great day! Not only was the weather warm, sunny and calm, but we also had a varied and interesting day. We got bikes from the Pension and biked along the Salzach River to Anthering. The Salzach is still thundering along with flood water but it seems to have dropped 2 to 3 metres from it's flood height. The bike paths are fantastic, smooth (mostly) and dedicated to cyclists only and there were heaps of cyclists out and about. They were all shapes and sizes, all ages, wore all sorts of clothing and only a smattering of the lycra brigade and helmets. Anthering is a small village about 15kms from Salzburg. We weren't sure what trail we were taking from there but after panting our way up a long steep hill (like the Beulah Ridge ... read more

We met at the Panorama Bus station at 8.30am for the half day trip to the Eagles Nest which is in Germany just out of Berchtesgaden and Obersalzburg. Most of us have heard of this notorious place because it was built for Hitler rather than because of the nature beauty of the area. We had a large and very comfortable bus take us through to Obersalzburg with a very able and amusing Tour Guide called Walter. He is Austrian, has lived in Australia and speaks several languages. He had many tales to tell and was a stickler for being on time at any particular place or you would be left behind. For example, one of his jokes was "What is the difference between a motorist and a pedestrian? Answer: Being two minutes late for the bus!" ... read more

We started the day with a huge breakfast and then bought a One Day Card for a number of attractions for the day. After studying the map, and the tours available, we figured that with a pamphlet listing all the places to visit we could do them all on foot. What can I say about Salzburg without writing a book? It is an incredibly beautiful city especially the old town down by the River Salzach and up to the castle on the hill. There are 1000s of bikes! They are everywhere. Car's are modern with rarely, if ever, an old one. People are friendly, there are heaps of young people (it's a university town) and there are a few too many beggars - all the same race and I really wondered about their need. Lastly, I ... read more
