It's another beautiful summer's day again in the Dordogne. What better way to start our stay in the area than going to a market. We set off for Libourne which is about a half hour drive from here and is reputed to have a great market which it does. It was very busy and filled the square plus some side streets as well as an inside cool market. The street scene had heaps of fruits and vegetables with some meats, breads, cheeses and apparel. The place I liked the most was the inside cool market which had meat, fish and cheeses. Not just some, but a huge choice with products that we don't have at home. Karilyn, of course, was in her element - food, food and more food of which we bought a lovely selection ... read more

After a hot night despite having a fan running all night, we breakfasted, packed up our gear and then all got taxis to the railway station. Deborah, Richard and Daniel got off at Tours as they were going to England for their further holiday with Dan. Cherie continued with us to Orleans where we got a bus back to our first hotel where we picked up the car and miraculously managed to fit 5 people’s gear into the car plus ourselves. We set the route on the GPS to Moncaret and headed right back to Tours where we had just come from! This was going to be the fastest route south for us. The distance to Moncaret was 502km which Lindsay drove pretty much in one hit with a break for lunch and a stop to ... read more

As we had a shorter biking day today and no chateaux that we wanted to visit along the way, we stayed in Chinon for a good look around and to do a tour of the winery cave in Chinon first. We did the Chinon walk (everyone seems to wander) and looked more slowly at the ancient streets and houses that we had toured yesterday. We took the lift up the hill to the fortress but opted not to go in and look. It was first built in 954 and added to over the years by counts or kings. It fell almost into total ruin but in the 1800's onwards it has been recreated and it is still ongoing. We walked downhill on the rough cobbled street and back into the medieval part of the town where ... read more

We left Tours at 8.30am with nice cool temperatures - cool enough to wear a top with sleeves. We were happy. And, there was a tail wind. It was a nice easy bike ride along the river Cher, mostly along the stop bank. We went through the usual grain fields and lovely small and very old hamlets. Our objective was Villandry where we were keen to visit the gardens. Since the others wanted to visit the chateau at the same time, we figured it best for us to continue on for the day on our own. Linds wanted me to complete the 60kms and not take the shorter distance by cutting out some of the route. I wasn't keen to do the distance if the high temps continued. However, it was a lot cooler and the ... read more

We got away a little earlier than usual and after buying our baguettes and fillings we began the next leg of cycling by the Amboise Chateau, through the town and uphill past some very old houses before taking several turns to head out into the country - all in the name of staying off the main roads. It was a bit cooler in the morning with a nice wind blowing and shadows in our direction. We went through some forest and then into countryside mostly of grain growing but also dairying much like at home - the milking shed, large tractors, round bales of hay and a workers house (much better than is supplied to many farm workers in NZ). We eventually arrived at the Chateau de Chenonceau which is a must see, as chateaus go. ... read more

Since yesterday was such a big day and we had missed seeing anything of Blois, we started with Blois. Close to the hotel was the Royal Chateau Blois and we had all opted for one chateau per day as there simply isn't the time to fit more than one in as well bike the distances between. The Royal Chateau was well worth the visit it having been the residence of several French kings (too many to list). It is also the place where Joan of Arc went in 1429 to be blessed by the Archbishop before departing with her army to drive the English from Orleans. The chateau was built over the period from 13th to 17th century and is centred around a large courtyard. We were able to visit the royal apartments with huge rooms ... read more

Today was to be a big day but I didn't bargain on how big since we were to bike just over 70kms which is more than I've ever done. It was going to be hot too, but I didn't bargain on how hot! It was 35 degrees out at the furthest part of our biking so we were at the point of no return. We left Beaugency at around 9am and biked along the river and flat grain farms mostly as well as small quaint villages that appeared unaltered for years. I expected this trip to be along busy roads with many people but it has been the opposite. The biking path is part of the Loire a Velo so much of it is on a superb surface (except for later). It is truly very picturesque ... read more

We all met after breakfast at the Le Parc Hotel for a debrief on the cycle tour. The cycling part of the tour (other than the admin, which is Hooked on Cycling) is run by GiroLibero. There would be about 30 people starting today of which 10 are Kiwis (our group). Those of us who have hired bikes have orange 28 gear bikes with a pannier each and a place to read the map on a water proof board between the handle bars. We are suppied with clear step by step directions, white on black arrows on poles or other suitable places, an overall map of the route and a book on chateaus of the Loire Valley. Todays ride was only 30kms so we could take our time and get used to the bikes and the ... read more

Today was a driving day. 650kms from Grindelwald to Orleans in France. The route was essentially to Bern, Newchatel, over the border into France through the Jura's then towards Paris and finally south to Orleans. We left at 9am and arrived at 5.15pm with four stops along the way to give Lindsay a rest, a drink and a shake up for the next 100 or so. The first part of the journey to the French border was interesting enough through cropping country mainly. Into the Jura mountains it became very rocky - mainly weathered limestone and clay. Once out of the hills we went into dairying country, followed by miles of cropping in the rolling country and down to the vast flats. It was surprisingly quite sparsely populated. The further west we went closer to Paris ... read more
