A day in the wilderness. Because holiday lodges are not being kept full by overseas people we have found that the restaurant at our motor lodge is not providing all meals, as advertised. This meant that a local cafe run by local people have benefitted so it's not all bad. Due to Covid19, a large contingent of 140 Kiwis boarded the Real Journey's Doubtful Sound vessel at 10.00am. We thought that without all the overseas tourists there wouldn't be huge number of people on the boat but we were wrong. What we're finding is that New Zealanders are filling the overseas tourist spaces particularly on the popular activities. It's lovely. It's like it used to be years ago when we didn't have to compete for space. Good for us but not so good for some business ... read more

What started off as wet, overcast day for a road trip, turned out to be an interesting day with unexpected bonus's. Rain belted down from Invercargill to Riverton, but despite that, we stopped at the Information Centre and Museum at Riverton to get some better information on the West Southland area. The lady there was very chatty and I soon found some information on geology and gemstones of the area. She suggested that we drive out to Riverton Rocks and check out the scenery there, which we did. I guess it was named for the very rocky coast but it's great for fishing, viewing dolphins, and fantastic views of Taramea Bay. I spied what looked like pillow lavas as we drove past and despite the rain, I put up the brolly, put on a raincoat and ... read more

We visited the most amazing garden we've ever visited before. In fact, so amazing, that it was daft! How could anyone create something so huge, so beautiful and so much work? So, some details...... Maple Glen is a 74 acre garden about 40 kms out of Invercargill, near Wyndham in the Hokonui Foothills. It was reached through really nice dairy farms and past a huge Fonterra Factory at Edendale (Edendale is where Lindsay's grandmother grew up). The property appeared quite ordinary as we arrived but as soon as we entered into the garden it stretched out into the distance with masses of beautiful trees and plantings. The more we walked, the bigger the garden got. One pond became many ponds, each with their own plantings. There were large areas of just rhododendrons, dells of special trees, ... read more

Since we cannot go to Stewart Island today, our time has been freed up to do other things so we set off to explore around the area and leave the town and gardens for tomorrow. Tomorrow there is a running race from the Sandy Point Domain into town so we figure it best to go there today while peace reigns. Our B&B is just off the Sandy Point Road so it was an easy drive straight down the peninsula. We were amazed. The environment and recreation Domain has every sport imaginable set up in the area - hiking, biking, speedway, equestrian, golf, rugby, scouts, shooting, archery and so much more, all in one area set amongst pines and natives and between the Oreti Ocean Beach and the Oreti Inlet. We set off on a walking circuit ... read more

A good and bad day. Firstly, the bad. I've had bad toothache for the last few days and despite many tablets it is not improving so the first thing we did today was to find an emergency dentist and made an appointment for 3pm. That was good as it gave us time to visit the places we wanted to see. My tooth needed the root canal done so the initial treatment has been done and further followup will be needed when back at home. My, that one tooth can sure spread pain about! Our estimate of the Whistling Frog Resort is that it is well located but needs further updating. It was also very expensive when compared to other places we've stayed. We left the Whistling Frog and continued 3km up the road to the McLean ... read more

The day dawned clear but cool but we figured we could run to shorts and sandals as it was going to reach a balmy 16 degrees! We headed off South on the road to Balclutha, near the mouth of the mighty Clutha river than supplies much of NZ's power. There, we called into the Information Centre for some good maps and guidance on the "must sees". Our first stop was to be Nugget Point via Kaka Point and Beach. We stopped at a new Cafe called the Port Molyneaux School Cafe which was the now closed school turned into a wedding venue facility. A marvellous job had been made to turn it into a new venue. It looks out directly to the magnificent bay where the Clutha River finishes. The sand is golden but the beach ... read more

After a sunny, warmish day yesterday, today has been raining off and on all day and we're back in our winter clothes. However, that wasn't to be a worry as we had already determined that we'd visit some museums today. Our first visit was to the Otago Museum which was modern and very impressive. Our main area of interest was the Natural History section on the top floor which had everything from earth sciences, animal, insect and plant information and local human history. My main interest was the paleontology exhibits which were fantastic! There was a huge pleisiosaur, a mososaur, sharks, whales, penguins, seals, fish, bones, shells and plants remains. As well were rocks and some minerals. It was gratifying to see how much I already had in my home collection even if my samples weren't ... read more

The weather looks great for some outdoor activities today and it's not so cold. We set off to Larnach Castle which should be on everyone's list as it's a rare sight indeed in New Zealand. The drive with great views over the harbour took a winding and steep road across the hilltops many kilometres out of Dunedin. What a magnificent location! The original owner and builder of the castle was portrayed as a rich and powerful man involved in business, banking and politics during the later 1800s. The design and materials used were mostly imported and must have cost a fortune during those times. Obviously money did not buy happiness as he shot himself in pariliament as did his son some time later, but at home! The setting is fantastic with landscaped grounds setting off the ... read more

After travelling from NP to Christchurch to Dunedin, we picked up our rental car with it's superb but difficult to set, GPS. Our destination was Port Chalmers where we wanted to visit the Maritime Museum. It was a cold 10 degrees! What happened to summer? Our destination was the Port Chalmers Maritime Museum which we'd seen on TV before. It was well worth the visit and a credit to the community in recording the maritime history going back to the time of original immigrants and refrigeration ships in the mid to later 1800s. There were many models of old sailing ships, the history of Port Chalmers, ship wrecks, port development, the hardship of early immigrants, and the original exploration ships to Antarctic by Scott, Shackleton and Byrd. Also there were the relics taken from the ships ... read more

We knew it was going to be wet today but we didn't bargain on it being quite so cold. We had a low of 5 and a high of 9. Never mind, we had a city tour in mind which would work in well with the weather and we did have warm clothes. Chur (pronounced Core) is just over 2 hours train ride from here so manageable for a day trip. We arrived in Chur in the middle of the day and set off for the Old Town which is through the new town and up the hill. The first feel on entry is that it feels spacious and not hemmed in but off the main square are many narrow streets with little over bridges joining one building to another across the street. Also there are ... read more
