It was great weather for biking today. Another Baby Bear day. It was a little cloudy and sunny all day. Because it's Saturday everyone of all ages seem to be out on bikes and I'd say 90% of those would be on ebikes. It almost seems to be a national pastime as people exercised, visited taverns, picnicked, went fishing or bird watched. We pondered which side of the river to bike on and decided on the Austrian side so 4kms down the road from Kirchdorf we crossed the river to Braunau. Our trail took us up through the main square where the town was not unlike Wasserberg and Muhldorf in terms of buildings and colours. Soon we were back onto the bike path and cruising our way along the river and to Hagenau where there was ... read more

It is another 'The Three Bears, Baby Bear Day'. It is "Just Right" - not too hot, not too cold, but just right for biking. Our day started with buying fresh bread rolls at the bakery then heading off - the wrong way up the river instead of down. The signage for the first 10km wasn't particularly wonderful and we had to have our wits about us looking for the Innweg arrows. At one spot we headed off too far and encountered a woman we had seen before! She recognised us and pointed in the right direction. Our day was sometimes along the river but mostly inland and through farms and villages again. We called in at Neuotting across the river to check it out as this village and the one at Altotting a bit further ... read more

What a day! There were hills galore, signs missing, it was cold, then it was hot, and I'm pretty knackered after 50kms of that. We left Wasserburg in a cool fog blanketing the hills around the river. Likely as not, this is a common occurrence in the valley. It soon burned off and we were in bright sunshine for the rest of the way. To start we went steeply uphill to get up onto the plateau above the town in the bend of the river. From here we cruised up and over farms, farmlets and forest. The farms were dairying and maize cropping. Huge combine harvesters were mowing and husking the maize into large articulated trucks for carting away. Notable is the absence of fences so that the farmland looks green and sweeping along with lots ... read more

Hooray! A fine day at last. That was the good bit. The bad was that my computer would not charge and I didn't know if the connector cord was kaput or what. The phone would charge ok. However, I cannot write these blogs without a computer. The Smartphone is okay up to a point if you don't mind a tiny keyboard, but photos won't transfer from the Cloud for some reason. Also, Lindsay had managed to bring his camera minus the storage card! My fault actually as I take it out to transfer photos and didn't put it back. We found that there was a MegaMart technical shop 3 kms away so off we biked through the morning traffic. Cities here are great for catering for cyclists and the lanes assigned work really well. At the ... read more

It's been a wet day but not so wet that it was unenjoyable. The temperature was perfect for biking and the day was really only spoiled by low cloud obscuring the lovely countryside we rode through. Some of it was through fields but mostly the path was on the east Austrian side, along a stop bank, past castles on hill tops and past 3 electricity dams on the Inn River. At one stage it rained enough for us to take a break in a village and have 'kaffee und kuchen'. There, we dried out, and warmed up with a very nice cherry cake and coffee. The little town is surrounded on 3 sides by Germany with the border being the river, the forest edge and some other feature not far away. Soon after, we were in ... read more

We've had the perfect biking day today. It was coolish but not cold and the bike trail went through some beautiful countryside. The Zillertal valley that we left is well worth returning to but time does not permit to explore it. Out of Strass we passed several ruins and castles until we reached Rattenberg which we stopped at to view the notable old town dating back to the 12th century. On the hill behind the town is a ruined castle or fort below which is the small but delightful town complete with alleys, cobbled streets, archways and a touristy main street with many glassware shops. We indulged in a very nice "kaffe und kuchen" from Hackers which is renowned for it's lovely cakes and pastries. From hereon it was full speed ahead through lovely countryside until ... read more

It wasn't a good start to our biking tour with cold, dull weather. Yes, it's plummeted from 30 degrees a couple of weeks ago to 12 degrees. If that wasn't enough we had a head wind (shades of the Danube). But, we have the gear and it was all on for a couple of hours. The Inn River Cycling Trail (the Innradweg) is in superb condition and is well signposted all the way starting at St Moritz in Switzerland. The Inn River is running fast and is full of silt at present from all the recent rain up high in the mountains. The cloud stayed up high and we didn't get any rain all day. Also, as the day went on it warmed up so that by the time we reached Wattens the sun was out. ... read more

It's a drizzly day in Innsbruck with temps like spring at home but never mind, it's not too hot! We set off to walk and see what eventuated. The hotel isn't far from the Old Town centre so we were soon into narrow alley ways, palaces, churches and old town houses with their intricate doors and frescoes. Also, there were the inevitable bus tour groups crowding this area! We figured they visited the Old Town, then the Swarovski factory and moved on, city by city throughout Europe. Central Innsbruck is really lovely and is a must see even though we've been here before. It is set in the Inn valley between high mountains on both sides with a narrow plain in between. We walked through the town, out the old town gate and on towards the ... read more

I thought today wasn't going to be worth writing up as it was to be a travel day but it wasn't quite as straight forward as expected. We left Haetzingen at 9am and changed trains at the bottom of the valley at Ziegelbrucke, then onto Sargans. This was a reminder to us of where we started our Alpine Pass Route trail across Switzerland some 10 years ago. At Sargans we changed to the Budapest Express train but could only go to Bludenz as the railway was closed for many kilometers due to works being done over the past few months. Here, everyone had to alight from the train and get onto a number of buses to take us through to Otztal. To this point we have left Switzerland, gone through Liechtenstein and into Austria. The bus ... read more

The day started with rain as expected which brought the temperature down to 18 - shades of home! The rain soon passed and left the day with clouds high up on the mountains and quite clear in the valley, so it was conducive for a walk down the valley on the high road. This trail took us along through farms and past farm buildings. There are virtually no animals around at present so I can only assume they are still grazing higher on the mountains until it's too cold. We came across a dairy selling mountain cheese, fresh milk, eggs and preserved meat so we purchased a block of cheese for about half of what we would pay at home. We also continued to pass textile factories that appear closed which took us to 4 in ... read more
