Heading to Firenze (Florence) after three night in the Cinque Terre. The Cinque Terre region was on the itinerary of just about everybody in Gimmelwald and I see why. Its just so ... authentic. Whatever your idea of what untouched, sea-side towns on the Italian Riveria would look like, this is it. (Google it to see what I mean). The families here go back centuries and they are very much still towns where people spend their whole lives. Its just a perfect day to take a lazy hike from one end of the five villages to the other. Its where the Europeans apparently take their families on vacation to get away from the tourists who flock to their own home towns. Very few Americans or Canadians here, although I won't pretend that Cinque Terre isn't "on ... read more

Still in Grimmelwald. I recommend to anyone visiting Europe to spend a few days in Murren or Grimmelwald to either hike or just chill out and take in the ridiculously amaying scenery. This hostel (Mountain Hostel) has by far been the best yet. Its extremely low key, a bit older crowd than the bunch at the "party" hostel in Interlaken, but still a great amount of fun. There's a group of really cool English kids who entertain most of the hostel into the wee hours with breakdancing and a few nights ago we had a group of 29 German prisoners who were on some kind of release program for assisting handicapped people in the outdoors, which created a whole different kind of interest from the hostel crowd. The weather here has not been worthy of the ... read more

My honeymoon with the Interlaken youth hostel came to a quick end last night. After I made my blog entry (if it wasn't obvious, I was kinda hosed at the time ...) when a bunch of frat boys and their girlfriends stormed into my dorm room early in the morning and blabbed for another hour. Moved on from Interlaken to Gimmelwald, which was the plan all along and was a good move. Gimmelwald is a mountain "village" of about 150 people at about 4,000' in the Alps. What I said yesterday about Western Washington comparing to the Alps .... I was wrong. Its not even close. The amount of vertical relief here is beyond compare. The village obviously relies on tourism, but its not anywhere near as gaudy as Interlaken, although the prices of everything just ... read more

Alright. This isn't fair. Every country has a different keyboard. Dammit. "Alt-Gr"+2 tp get a "@" sign? Ridiculous ... What a difference a day makes. I woke up, with no Eurail pass and had to get to Interlaken, Switzerland as that was where my lodging reservations were made. Pass showed up early in the morning, was able to make my reseravations forthe train, and made it to Interlaken easily. From the train, Europe seems to have skipped the whole "exburbs" and "McMansions" boom, which was refreshing to see. I get the feeling that if these countries were under American control, everything would have been developed into endless sprawl by now. For whatever reason Switzerland was able to avoid it, I´m thankful. Interlaken rocks. I'm moving here. Interlaken is in the heart of the alps and is ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris August 8th 2007

''Those French ... it's like they have a different word for *everything*!'" - Steve Martin. No shit. Its been over twenty years since I took French in college and only a little bit of whatever I knew at one point remains. But I'll take it. My first meal in France, the food capital of the world, consisted of fish-kabobs and two Heinnekens at a Japanese sushi joint last night. I was staying in "epinay sur seíne'' which is apparently French for "ghetto by the Seine". But at least I managed to order the meal in French dammit. So, I was proud about that, although I think at one point I asked the waiter what color his monkey was. As I said initially, don't expect blog postings daily. Í''m posting one now because I managed to find ... read more

Finishing my last full day in London. Is London a cool place? Hell yeah. Do I recommend anyone coming to Europe to check out London? You bet. Does London knock my socks off? Not really ... I've been hanging out in a city of 7 million people for the past four days, and that's too many people for my liking. My boogers are black, every day from breathing all the soot-filled air all day and London apparently doesn't believe in trash cans. There's litter everywhere. Even all the top tourist spots. Any future trips here will be to explore the rest of England, Scotland and Ireland. Still, I don't regret at all any of the time spent playing tourist. Parliament was by far my favorite, probably because I just finished law school and my tour guide ... read more

Greetings, Welcome to my entry into the blogosphere. Yeah, everybody and their dog seems to have a blog nowadays, but this seemed like a good a way as any to post any interesting stories or photos during my upcoming travels. I'm not going to try and pretend for every entry to be witty, interesting or insightful, so forgive the obvious ("The Eiffel Tower is really big!"). If its something I think is worth commenting on, you're gonna hear about it. Most of you know where I'm heading, but even I don't have all the details figured out, so I'm sure even I'll be surprised where I wind up. I made the initial distribution list pretty broad, so if you want out, I think its easy to unsubscribe, or just email me. Doug... read more
