Good luck climbing the mountain! My best friend did it years ago, and she'd never climbed a mountain before, so it's doable... but I'd sure never try it myself :)

Funny, I had sort of the same first impression of Florence, and we also went there straight from the Cinque Terre. One of my favorite restaurants IN THE WORLD is in Florence, though - wish I would have thought to tell you about it before you left!!! I'm a rare person who actually loved Rome more than Florence - hope you have fun there! And watch out for the crazy mopeds!

I actualy took Italian in highschool and college, but I'd probably resort to the same few phrases that you are! Have fun in Florence! Our friends thought it was the best Italian city by far.

aaah Switzerland!
Finally looked it up, we stayed in Murren. So sad you aren't getting good weather! Also looked up our hikes, probably nothing like the crazy hikes you're doing - we went Kleine Scheidegg to Mannlichen, and took funicular up to Allmendhubel and hiked north face trail back down to Murren. Incredible views - and loved all the bells on the cows! Enjoy your last day there, and enjoy the Cinque Terre! My favorite part of Italy!!
