I woke up at 4:30am and was soon followed by a hungry Abcde and her transportation, Caroline. Soon changed, fed, and medicated (in addition to being constipated still she has a bit of a cough and stuffy nose) Abs and Caroline went back to bed. I stayed up for a while and updated yesterday's trip entry. Abcde has been constipated for 3 days but finally released. She should be much more comfortable now. (I know that bowel movements are not great literature, but it is a fact of the trip) Abs and I slept from 3 to 6. Dinner was pork loin. Someone left the gas flowing at the grill behind our building. I saved us all by turning it off on my way to the hot tub for a latenight dip. After a swim we ... read more

For BirthMas (combo birthday and Christmas present) Mom got me a bike trailer/stroller I have been looking at for months. It holds up to 2 children/87 pounds. This will be coming with us. So my coworker Mike offered to swap days with me and I ended up with a Thursday and Friday off leading into our trip. This helped greatly and Caroline and I had finished all packing by Friday afternoon. Originally the plan had been for Poppop to go on Friday morning with Erin and Jay on down to Hilton Head and for Caroline, Gamma, and I to head down Saturday morning after I got off work. Bisabuela Orleans had been suffering some health issues the week before the trip and since Gamma was worried about her mum it looked that the trip would be ... read more

So we landed in the US of A and after processing thru customs headed to our gate. We sat and read killing time until the gate would open and we would be on our way. Just when we were ready to board the airline came over the speaker and announced that our flight was cancelled. I hoofed it down to guest services and got in line with every one else, leaving Caroline to catch up. She was a little miffed that I rushed ahead but understood when she saw the line behind me. We processed through the line for an hour all the while trying to contact United via the phone or the website. Eventually we received and E-Mail announcing we had been re-booked... for 3 days from now... that was not going to fly. I ... read more

Speck and Caroline arrived on time in Brussels and then had a multi-hour layover. After being processed through security again they wandered the shopping area and then found their gate. After checking in at the gate Caroline found a couch and laid down for a nap. Speck went in search of a drink and a place to see the Olympics, he was suffering a severe case of Olympic Neglect. After finding a stand cleverly named BAR he purchased a 500ml Hoegarden and sat down in-front of one of the TVs. When the commercials ended he discovered, to his dismay, that not the Olympics but music videos were being displayed. Working his way through his beer, Speck then returned and waited with Caroline for their flight to begin boarding. While waiting in line to board Speck inevitably ... read more

Around 11 am breakfast had been eaten, pleasantries had been observed and Speck and Caroline were on their way into Nyeri to catch a matatu to Nairobi. On the way a stop was made at a small school where James's children attended. This stop was slightly longer than expected due to once again having gone where they ought not to. James was detained briefly and questioned by the principal and instructed not to bring visitors again without clearing it through him. The matatu ride was uneventful until it reached the outskirts of Nairobi. The driver missed the exit where he was to release Speck and Caroline so he did the traditional Kenyan thing, he stopped in the highway and let them out. After waiting 45 minutes looking for a matatu going the right route Speck and ... read more

Alarms rung at 7 am, it was time to get ready. At 8 Speck was by the car and by 8:10 Caroline was onboard and the first cow was being shooed from the Way. The drive to Nanyuki was so swift they Daniel stopped at the corporation shops that Mr. Kimathi had invested in, and the three of them had a wonderful breakfast of tea (Kenyan style with milk and sugar), doughnut, mandazi, and a plate of chips and sausage. This really hit the spot and it was with eagerness on their faces and food in their bellies that Daniel drove Speck and Caroline into Nanyuki. At the main turn off to Muthoni's, Karuoya and Muthoi were picked up. Back up the road the turn was made to the safari camp. Since there was time to ... read more

Monday morning Speck is up early and looking for monkeys. He heard they could be seen in Nyeri but has yet to find any. This day David has been recruited to drive the Mercedes to Nanyuki. At 11am Mother, Caroline, Karuoya, Daniel and Speck are all in the car and on the way. On route they stopped at Narumoro, where Baba Kimathi is a member of a cooperative that has constructed retail space for rent. There many souvenirs were obtained before continuing on to Nanyuki. Shortly before they reached Nanyuki, the car reached the equator, everyone debarked and photos were taken with a sign marking the equator. Lunch at Muthui's was delicious, chicken, goat, 2 kinds of chapati, stew, potatos, and fantastic guacamole. Joanne Muthui had enjoyed seeing Speck and Caroline so much on Sat that ... read more

This day was spent still at the Kimathi homestead. It is T M Kimathi's 83rd birthday. During the morning Speck played with his small friends, Lincoln, Gloria, David, and Rose. They dragged him from chickens, to quail, to rabbits, to cows to tomato trees (not a typo, the tree grows a fruit that tastes like tomatoes), and all over the place. Around 1 pm is the cake cutting which is preceded by speeches. First T. M. spoke, then his wife spoke. Then a man who was in his 70's spoke of how he had known T.M. for a very long time and come to all of his birthday parties for a very long time, and then told a fairy tale, and then kept talking and it looked like he was describing bowling because of the arm ... read more

Today Speck will be introduced to the rest of the family and extended family. The rooster wakes him up several times and he finally surrendered at 9 am. Breakfast is a couple pieces of arrow root, a sort of purpleish potato, and tea. Everyone is in preparation mode, the plan is to eat at 1pm before the church elders arrive, then at 3 have a kind of ceremony, and then afterwards Speck will go through a dowry ceremony. In expectation of needing some money, Speck and Caroline went to Nyeri town and hit the ATM, then a quick stop at the grocer and back to the house. Speck and Caroline grab showers and get ready and shortly after 1pm are ready to eat. They are given some confusing instructions and then are left waiting. 2pm comes, ... read more

Friday morning Speck slept in until 9 am again. Caroline spent the morning packing and getting her hair done again. (it is so cheap to have your hair done that most women do not even own a blow dryer.) While Caroline was getting her hair done, Speck had become bored and took Janet and Shiro for a drink at Eden. Speck tried his first Guinness Foreign Extra and loved it. They returned to the house and had lunch at about 1:30 and were just waiting on Junior, who was to drive, to get home. At 4pm he still had not shown and Baba Junior suggested that Speck drive. Speck jokingly agreed, not believing that anyone would trust their car to someone who had never driven a right handed car, on the wrong side of the road, ... read more
