Mothers Day Abs woke up and 1 am but I got her back down and then wished Caroline a happy mothers day before we went back to sleep again. Abcde and I then got up at 5:30 local time but it still feels like 8:30am to us cause, ya know, Kentucky time. She watched Disney channel in espaƱol while I read a book until wife was ready to greet the day. We killed some time at the hotel, gave the monkey a shower, got soap in her eye, took 20 minutes to pick out a toy from the treasure chest behind the front desk, removed the car seat from the Hyundai and watched some HGTV. Katrina and Joel came to get us and our first stop was target. It had been decided that it was my ... read more

Alarm kept going off at 3am in the room. Phone alarm went off at 4 and I cycled through the shower cause wife was not moving yet. Running behind called down to desk to bump shuttle from 5 to 5:30, we hadn't been scheduled for the 5. Knowing that breakfast would not be out before we had to leave in the morning, I had packed a lunch box with Morningstar Farms veggie sausage that I could cook in the microwave and some crackers and peanut butter and cheese sticks, just so we could get some protein in our bellies quickly before boarding the plane. Made it to the lobby at 5:15 and got Curtis, the night desk guy, to hook Abcde up with some milk while I greedily chugged coffee. Side note, I really like the ... read more

Away we go. Spending the night in a hotel beside the airport is the place to be. The first flight we had found was an early morning departure and so wanted to be nearby so Wife could sleep in as late as possible. That would be relative as we would catch the shuttle at 5am and so would have to wake up at 4. Caroline came home from work and we tried to eat the rest of the leftovers out of the fridge. I got the car loaded and at 7:30 we were on our way. Arriving at the hotel i realized that I had forgotten our compact stroller in the other car. Oh well, I will just have to get one there. We settled in as much as we could and by 11pm were in ... read more

Caroline heard about inexpensive tickets to LA direct from Cincinnati and with a little luck we were able to swing cheap tickets, rooms and rental car for a trip to LA. This lets us visit the left coast, introduce Abcde to some friends and me to burn off the last of my vacation days before they expire. I have never been to LA before, and it has been almost 10 years since I visited San Francisco, this trip should be interesting. We are going to be changing hotels every couple of days so hopefully Caroline will pack light. I am working on finding things to do with a 2 year old and Caroline is just thinking about the beach.... read more

We pulled into the drive minutes before the sun began to drop below the horizon. Tyler and I unpacked onto the lawn and dispersed all the baggage to its respectful owners. The take away: 1. Tyler needs a diaper and cranberry juice or pills, too many bathroom stops. 2. Speck needs to wear more sunscreen. 3. Abcde travels like a champ. 4. Wife needs to be the first through the bathroom each morning, not the last. 5. The Boucherie's 12 hour brisket with horseradish and onions was the best thing I ate the whole trip, closely followed by Muriel's goat cheese crepe with crawfish remoulade and Jack Ruby's butter steak sliders img=http://images.travelpod.com/users/thespeck/thumbnail.xlarge.18.1492043631.img_0834.jpg?1492720209Ariel shot of Jackson square . 6. If leaving after Caroline works a full day,... read more

Tyler had slept in our living room and appeared to be sleeping as Abcde and I headed to breakfast. Abs made faces with the staff while eating blueberries until Vallery and Joyce came down. I then headed up to grab a shower and get wife moving. Long story short, we got on the road a bit later than I had hoped, more like 11am than the 10am or earlier that everyone but wife seemed to be shooting for. We headed north on a new route, Siri said it would be faster, we assumed that was because we would dodge some road construction. Anyway it took us through Chattanooga and Knoxville on our way back to Lexington. By the time we had reached Chattanooga we had only stopped 3 times for either gas or potty breaks. Late ... read more

We arrived at about 11pm and quickly got to our rooms. Vallery, Joyce and Tyler again had their go bags, Wife had squeezed our things into one of the suitcases so all in all it was much less to carry in. We had stopped to grab dinner at KFC and Tyler had walked across the parking lot to Jacks for a salad. KFC's Nashville Hot Chicken was ok, but really unimpressive if you have had the real thing. We cycled through the bathroom and soon were in our beds, or cribs, or couches, where ever we were going to get some sleep. Cross our fingers we will be on the road before 10am! ... read more

Last day of the festival and the day we check-out. Of course it is the first morning that I sleep until 8am. Breakfast, showers, packing it is a whirlwind. We remembered to say goodbye to Liz, the breakfast lady, and I thanked Jeannette at the front desk for all of her help. I get the ladies suitcases and my own things on out to the van and at 10am drive over to the other hotel to pick up Tyler. Luckily Milliken has decided to source his own transportation to the airport so that saves an hour or so of my day. Milliken has already headed out to the casino to try and recoup his losses or to the fest. Not sure and we don't see him for the rest of the day. Tossing Tyler's bag in ... read more

Abs and I were up early again. After Caroline awoke, I got the car from valet and zipped over to pre-check in Joe, Caroline's cousin. Joe and his son Ryan were coming in from Florida to spend the day with us and would leave on Sunday morning. After getting him squared away I found Tyler at breakfast and warned him that Joe may need to stash his bag in Tyler and Milliken's room if his room was not ready when he arrived. Tyler was cool with that and told me that he had lost his folding chair the previous night, left it outside a port a john. Bummer. Then I was back to my hotel to help Caroline and Abcde get ready for the day. Caroline, Abcde and I headed off to Jackson Square sans Vallery ... read more

And history repeats itself. Abcde and I are up early and head downstairs for coffee. I like Hampton Inn's Robust Blend and Abs drinks the decaf at room temp, both of us like it black and bitter. As we sit and watch the news we find President Trump had bombed Syrian airfields in response to Syrians poisoning other Syrians with chemical weapons. At least Trump did what Hillary said he should do? So both Democrats AND Republicans can be happy about bombing a third world country into the 4 dimension? But I digress, this travelogue is about the French Quarter Festival, the greatest free festival ever! Or at least that I have ever been to...Eventually we rouse Wife, cycle through the shower and once presentable, head out to enjoy the city and the beautiful day that ... read more
