First on today's list was snowshoeing! Certainly not a planned activity for a trip in the middle of May, but after finding the snowshoes in our cabin last night, we just had to try them. And we had plenty of snow for our snowshoe adventure. Well the adventure was really just around the yard of the cabin, but for us southern girls, it was an adventure. The snowshoes were big and bulky but they did the job. I only fell once and got a great leg workout in the process. It did not take long to realize that snow shoeing was the only safe way to walk outside this morning. After a little sunshine yesterday and more snow fall last night, the ground was all ice. So that was the only safe way to get our ... read more

What a difference a day can make. We woke to clearing skies and a dry ground, which is just bazaar considering the crazy weather we had yesterday, but glad for it. Barbara has a friend that lives in the area so we met her for breakfast before heading out for the day. We checked road conditions, weather, and got a few questions answered from her friend about the area and hit the road. We stopped by North Cheyenne Canon Park. The park is maintained by the City of Colorado Springs and is accessed by some less traveled back roads. I wasn't sure what to expect from the park, but I thought if the word 'canyon' is part of the name that it had to have something worth looking at. I also read about a waterfall that ... read more

Today began the first leg of a new trip - a girls trip. 'The Girls' are my mother (Linda), my aunt (Barbara), my step sister (Stephanie) and me. This trip idea came about when trying to determine what to do to celebrate a couple of 'significant' birthdays and Mothers Day. So a plan was developed and this is the weekend to do it - headed to Colorado Springs. We had an early flight out of Atlanta and arrived in Denver before 8am. I have never heard so many people sleeping in one place as on that airplane today. And the guy right behind me snored loudly from the time we boarded in Atlanta, through the take off, through all the turbulence, through the entire flight and through the landing. Amazing. We picked up our rental car, ... read more

Last night we slept with a mouse. After all, we were in the middle of the woods, so why not get the full experience by sleeping with a wild animal. Most may not think of mice as wild, but I will tell you they are. We stayed in a cabin (basically a hotel room with exterior log walls) at Flagg Ranch again. Right about the time everyone else fell asleep, I heard something. I looked over at the floor and there he was - the mouse, named Lucky via Peggy. I let everyone else know that we had a visitor and we moved a few things around to be sure he did not get into them and that he did not climb in my suitcase and go home with me. That mouse played all night. He ... read more

We were up and at 'em again today. Up early and on the road early. But even though we were up and ready, not everyone was feeling too good. David has been fighting a head cold and it is taking its toll. So after some meds, we checked out of our hotel and headed right back into Yellowstone. After yesterday's success with wildlife we were anxious to get started again. We didn't have to wait long before finding Yellowstone's prime animals in their own habitat. Just a few miles in, we saw a blue crane and a trumpeter swan floating on the river. We stopped to admire her beauty and take a few pics as well as several other people. They looked like the Secret Wolf Watching Society from a couple of days ago with their ... read more

Today I woke up with a red nose. And forehead. All the hiking in the unusually warm sunny fall weather has given me a sunburn. Who would have thought that I would travel from Georgia to Wyoming in the fall 1 week after they had 2 snow storms and I would go home with a sunburned face. And they are expecting more snow next week. I guess we did pick a good week to visit. A little sunburn is much better than being snowed out of the park. Everyone else woke with sore muscles. The whole crew was up and ready early today. We stayed at a bed and breakfast log cabin in Cooke City, MT and enjoyed a tasty home cooked breakfast before heading back into the park. It rained most of the night and ... read more

Before diving into our day, a little background on how this trip came about. This trip is a bit different from my previous ones, for this time the traveling party consists of 4 adults - David (technically my uncle, but to me he is just David), Peggy (David's longtime girlfriend), Linda (my mother) and me (the trip planner). David and Peggy went to Yellowstone and Grand Tetons last summer and wanted to go back. After hearing of the things we saw on a previous trip and some things they missed, they asked if we would go back with them and sort of plan it for them. So me, a person who loves to visit our national parks and is a bit OCD and very much a planner, did just that and here we are - sitting ... read more

What a beautiful morning we woke up to. Clear skies and cool temps with a view out over Yellowstone River along with the bugle call of the bull elk. The fall colors were shining trough the early morning river fog and colors from the sunrise lit up the sky. I could live here. My husband told me before I left that I am going to leave on one of the trips one day and not come back. He may be right. I would send for him and the kids though - just sell it all and come join me. We stayed in a cabin at Flag Ranch located between Grand Tetons and Yellowstone and of course I was the first up and ready. I took a stroll down by the river while the others finished getting ... read more

Today the trip came to an end. But before we called it done, we had a few stops to make. So up and ready before 8am, we said goodbye to Key Largo headed north and continued up US 1, leaving the FL keys. We stopped in Homestead for breakfast and took a slight detour to visit Biscayne National Park. It is located only 8 miles from Homestead, so of course we had to visit - it is a national park after all. I knew before deciding to stop there that we would not really see all that much. But I couldn't be that close to a national park and not try to see what I could. We arrived at the visitor center and viewed the displays inside. It is located on the water, so we walked ... read more

Today was the highlight of our whole trip - the one thing I scheduled to do. Visit Dry Tortugas National Park. It is located 70 miles out to sea and is probably the most remote national park in the NP System. It is only accessible by charter boat, sea plane, or the national park ferry. We opted for the ferry. It is the most popular option and the least expensive, but all options are very expensive. We had to be at the boat ramp by 7am so it was an early wake up time. We also had to check out of the hotel, so we packed everything up, loaded the car and headed to the marina. We checked in, retrieved our passes and listened to the instructions from the crew. They also had Dramamine for sale, ... read more
